When you approach the scene, you will see Belienne trying to talk to someone who looks identical and is terrified of her:
- Belienne: "There you are! Finally. I just want to talk."
- Belienne's Fear: "You again! Stay away from me! Help! She's going to kill me!"
- <Belienne's Fear runs away into the distance.>
- Belienne: "No, wait! Ugh. This is hopeless."
You can then speak with her to find out what you just witnessed:
- "Ugh, I'm such a screaming ninny when I panic. I suppose you saw that whole debacle?
It's embarrassing enough for me to witness my own base emotions, let alone anyone else. I've got to pull myself together. Literally." - Were you just talking to … yourself?
- "Obviously. Though I hoped it would go better.
I was experimenting with the reflective Daedric magic in this region. I always loved mirrors. During my studies, I fractured my personality, freeing my emotions to run amok. I haven't felt right since." - You fractured your personality?
- "Must I repeated myself? You saw my fear earlier.
I don't miss my stupid whims, but I'm not myself without my facets. They're running wild and now they won't return to me. Maybe a stranger could convince them to come back. I'll make it worth your time." - I'll convince your facets to return to you.
- "I wish I didn't need my petty emotions. They only cause trouble.
I'm still linked to my facets. I sense one near a river south of Skingrad. It's probably my despair. I can be rather dramatic when I'm in a doleful mood, and the water is comforting."
After you agree to help, you can ask questions:
- I have some questions.
- "Of course you do. Let's get on with it then.
I'd rather not drag this out any longer than I have to, although at least my despair isn't likely to run anytime soon. I tend to wallow when the mood strikes." - What caused your personality to split?
- "If I knew the answer to that, do you think I would be here?
Daedric magic is tricky at best, and the magic in West Weald is particularly volatile. I must have pushed my experiment too far and shattered some element binding the spell together."
- "If I knew the answer to that, do you think I would be here?
- Why were you experimenting with Daedric magic?
- "I'm a sorceress. Daedric magic is just a tool, like a hairbrush or a dab of rouge.
I was creating a spell to expedite my morning routine. Mirror magic is more powerful here. It was going swimmingly until the mirrors shattered and I did, too."
- "I'm a sorceress. Daedric magic is just a tool, like a hairbrush or a dab of rouge.
- How am I supposed to get your facets to return to you?
- "Honestly, I'm not sure. Talk to them, for a start.
I can be quite stubborn, so I expect my facets won't come easily. Do whatever it takes to convince them to return. Appease them. Bargain with them. Tie them up for all I care, just get them back."
- "Honestly, I'm not sure. Talk to them, for a start.
When you find Belienne's Despair, she will ask you to find some river flowers for her, to make her feel better. Once you have brought them back to her, you convince her to rejoin with her prime self. At this Belienne will arrive to rejoin with her Despair:
- Belienne: "There you are, darling. Let me share your burdens."
- Belienne Despair: "Please, I don't want to be alone anymore."
- Belienne: "You won't be. Not ever again."
- <Orange light appears in Belienne's hands and Despair rises in the air, surrounded by a warm light and disappears in sparks.>
- Belienne: "Oh, I feel so heavy all of a sudden."
Taking with her, she finds the sudden influx of emotion overwhelming:
- "Good work. That's one less facet to worry about."
- How do you feel?
- "I feel … sad. Oh, it aches! What's this pressure in my chest? I can't stand it!"
- What can I do to help?
- "Please, return another facet. There's one nearby. It feels boisterous. My delight, maybe? I need more than despair, it's overwhelming.
I always liked celebrating at Stonechip Tavern in Ontus. Check there. Now, I need to lie down for a bit."
She will then head over to the river to sit where her Despair once did. If you try talking to her again:
- "Please, go on ahead. I don't have the strength to deal with people right now.
Head to Ontus and look for my delight in Stonechip Tavern. When I'm in a good mood, I'm drawn anywhere with drinks and noise and crowds. Ugh."
When you arrive at the Stonechip Tavern, you will find a merry Delight drinking away. When you speak with her, she asks that you bring her some West Weald Wallop before talks with you proper. You can get cask either by buying it from Server Tsaxol or stealing it from behind the bar. Once you have it, you pour yourselves a drink and end up blacking out afterwards.
You wake up in the bedroom on the upper floor, where an embarrassed Belienne greets you:
- Belienne: "Well, that was embarrassing. Don't worry, I already took her back. Can we speak, friend?"
Speak with Belienne to see what she has to say:
- "That was mortifying, I'm sorry you had to see that. I never did learn to hold my drinks.
After all that, I would understand if you want to leave. But I could still use your help, if you're willing." - What else do you need me to do?
- "That's a fair question. I don't feel quite like myself, and it's not just the headache I can feel brewing thanks to my delight's indulgence.
I'm still missing two facets. I need you to get them back." - All right. I'll look for your next facet.
- "That's good, but I don't think this one wants to be found. It's my fear—the same facet you saw earlier. She probably ran to the deepest place she could find to hide.
I sense she's in a cave or ruin southwest of Ontus." - I'll look for your fear southwest of Ontus.
- "Tread lightly. I hate to admit it, but I've never been good in a panic. Quite the opposite, actually. I doubt my fear will come willingly.
I'll catch up with you as soon as I've settled, well, I suppose it's my tab now, isn't it?"
You can ask Belienne some questions:
- I have some questions about your facets.
- "I suppose that's only fair. It may be a moment before they tally up my tab. It appears my delight was a big spender.
Please, ask your questions. I could use the distraction." - What happens if we don't find all your facets?
- "I'm not sure, but it can't be good. Beyond the inevitable confusion and damage to my reputation, I don't know what they'll do if they get desperate.
They're beings of pure emotion, they can't be reasoned with. We need to get them under control."
- "I'm not sure, but it can't be good. Beyond the inevitable confusion and damage to my reputation, I don't know what they'll do if they get desperate.
- Why did your facets run away in the first place?
- "Haven't you ever given into your feelings? Stopped thinking and just acted? It was something like that.
My facets are pure emotion. When they shattered, there was no logic. They simply followed their urges."
- "Haven't you ever given into your feelings? Stopped thinking and just acted? It was something like that.
- How do you feel now?
- "Better than before. Bubbly, even, despite the nausea. My delight did the drinking. Now I'll get to deal with the consequences.
Still, it's better than the despair I was feeling earlier. I find the melodrama exhausting, even when it's my own."
- "Better than before. Bubbly, even, despite the nausea. My delight did the drinking. Now I'll get to deal with the consequences.
If you speak to her again:
- "I'm stuck here white they tally my tab. It could be a while.
Try looking for my fear somewhere secluded, like a cave or ruin. I think she's southwest of Ontus."
You find Fear in the Nonungalo ruins, and while chasing after her you eventually have to rescue her from giant spiders. When you finally get the chance to speak with her, you convince her that you and Belienne do not mean her harm. During your conversation, she mentions that a "scary Belienne" threatened her because she was too pretty. After you finish speaking with Fear, Belienne arrives to take her facet back:
- Belienne: "It's all right, darling. I'm here now, you don't have to run anymore."
- Belienne's Fear: "I was so scared. I didn't think the fear would ever end."
- Belienne: "Fear keeps us alive. You were doing your best. But let's work together from now on."
- <Orange light appears in Belienne's hands and Fear rises in the air, surrounded by a warm light and disappears in sparks.>
- Belienne: "Oh, my heart's racing! I don't like this place. Please, speak with me for a moment."
Speak with Belienne to learn about the last facet you need to find:
- "Let's make this quick, I want to get out of here.
There's only one facet left. I know which one it is now, and she's not going to be easy to capture." - Which one is it?
- "Ugh, I hate admitting it's such a major part of my personality, but it's my vanity.
I believe she's somewhere in Dawnwood, which is essentially the most dangerous place she could be." - Why is it so dangerous?
- "It's the Wood Elves, all right? Their long lives. Their ethereal beauty. I always wanted to be as beautiful as them. I'm ashamed to admit all the jealous thoughts I've had.
Without logic or restraint, I don't know what my vanity will do to them." - All right. I'll look for your vanity in Dawnwood.
- "I should join you this time. I can be rather headstrong when I'm in a mood.
I'll go ahead to Dawnwood and meet you in the town of Vashabar. Ask if anyone has seen something that could lead us to my vanity. I doubt she's being subtle. Find me there."
After talking her, Belienne will say her farewell:
- Belienne: "I'll meet you in Vashabar. We have to find my vanity before she does something regrettable."
When you reach Vashabar, you find Belienne being confronted by Elelorn about something Belienne's Vanity did to his wife:
- Belienne: "I'm telling you, there's been a mistake! Give me a chance to explain!"
- Elelorn: "Why don't you explain how you escaped? Or what you did to my wife?"
- <Sarragwen walks up to them.>
- Sarragwen: "What's going on, Elelorn? I just checked on the prisoner. She's secure."
- <Belienne notices you.>
- Belienne: "Finally, there you are! There's been a misunderstanding. Please, let me explain."
Speaking with Belienne you can learn why Elelorn is so angry at her:
- "This Wood Elf is so angry with me. I'm sure he has reason to be. I just wish I knew what drove my vanity to such crimes."
- What's going on here?
- "This man claims I turned his wife into a pig and escaped my bonds. Thankfully, the guard says her prisoner is still secure, but we're too late to prevent my vanity from lashing out."
- What should we do?
- "There's only one option. I have to face my vanity.
I can be petty at times, but I've never been prone to such dark magic. At least, not consciously. I suspect something's been festering inside me for too long. Maybe together we can clear the air."
The group will then enter the Treepod where Vanity is being held:
- Belienne: "Please, let my friend speak with your prisoner. We're all eager to resolve this."
- Sarragwen: "Very well, but we'll accompany you. Don't try anything."
- Elelorn: "I don't like this, Sarragwen. They might use their vile magic on us!"
Speaking with Belienne before Vanity:
- "Please, speak with my vanity. I know she can be unpleasant, but we need to find out what happened here."
When you talk with Vanity, she shows no remorse and gleefully admits to turning Mindiras into a pig. With that the group will react:
- Elelorn: "How dare you? You had no right!"
- Sarragwen: "Calm yourself, Elelorn!"
- Belienne: "I can't believe it. Please, friend, I must speak with you!"
Speak with Belienne to find what she realised:
- "This is awful. She's not just my vanity, she's my rage."
- What will you do now?
- "I don't know. It's hard enough for me to acknowledge my vanity, let alone this rage. I understood my other facets, but this one is something I've been suppressing for a long time.
I'm scared to let her back in." - The others helped restore you. Without her, you won't be whole.
If you leave and return to the conversation at this point:
- "I understood my other facets. None of them were perfect, but I recognized them as part of myself.
This one is different though. I've been suppressing her for a long time. I don't want to take her back." - The others helped restore you. Without her, you won't be whole.
- "I suppose you're right. Refusing to acknowledge this facet is what allowed it to fester and grow so angry in the first place.
Thank you. Please, take this token of my gratitude. I know what I need to do now."
With the completion of the quest, Belienne will accept the Vanity and Rage aspects of herself and reunite with them:
- Belienne: "This prisoner is my responsibility. Let me deal with her, and I'll submit myself to your judgement."
- Sarragwen: "Fine, but make it quick."
- Belienne's Vanity: "Back off, you simpering fool!"
- Belienne: "Darling, we're one and the same. I'll accept you, but you'll never hurt anyone again."
- Belienne's Vanity: "You can try to stop me, but we both know I'm part of you, and I always will be."
- <Orange light appears in Belienne's hands and Vanity rises in the air, surrounded by an orange light and disappears.>
Belienne will then turn the Wood Elves to fix what she has done:
- Belienne: "I'm so sorry for what she, well, I, did to your wife. Let me make amends."
- Elelorn: "Enough of your tricks! You can fix this by returning my wife to me!"
- Belienne: "Of course. Please, allow me to reverse the spell."
- <Belienne raises her right hand and magical light surrounds the pig, turning her back into Mindiras.>
- Mindiras: "Oh, thank Y'ffre that's over!"
- Elelorn: "Mindiras, my love, you're back! Sarragwen, I revoke my charges. Let the stranger leave and put this behind us."
- Sarragwen: "Very well. You are both free to go."
- Belienne: "Thank you. And you, friend. I won't forget all your help in this."
Talking with Belienne afterwards:
- "I suppose I ought to thank you. Count yourself lucky, darling. I've never let anyone see as much of myself as you have.
I don't know what's coming next, but at least I know I'll be facing it whole. You have my gratitude."
