'Google Maps'-Style Maps

I was just wondering if there are plans to make a google maps style map for skyrim like the oblivion/si maps. Those were super nice to use and really well done. Thanks --Lord.Baal 23:29, 10 November 2011 (UTC)

In-Game Map Legend

I really think we could do well to take pictures of each of the in-game map icons and label them. I know that the Dragonhead Icon is Word Walls, just recently found that out. Few others are easily explained. Knoxx 16:07, 11 November 2011 (UTC)

I see the list requested by Knoxx has come. Some of the icons are marked there as unused, and mostly I agree. Currently the icon called Castle 2 are among them though, but it found as marker for the Mistveil Keep in Riften. At least on the PC version. --MortenOSlash 19:42, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

Map listed as "pre-release map"

It's fanmade and it isn't accurate. Perhaps the official map would be better in that section. — Unsigned comment by 124.169.81.105 (talk) at 11:49 on 16 November 2011 (UTC)

Page stretching

This icons table is stretching it for 1024 width browsers, I considered splitting it in half, but it looks well organized this way, can we shrink it down or something? Lukish_ Tlk Cnt 08:50, 28 November 2011 (UTC)

Skyrim or Cyrodiil?

I haven't found an answer about my question. Which map is bigger?? Skyrim or Cyrodiil?? Which one has more dungeons?? So far I love skyrim, just want to know. — Unsigned comment by 189.232.130.20 (talk) at 18:55 on 12 December 2011

Game Banshee map

Have you guys seen the Game Banshee map? It's awesome, need something like that here: [[1]] Vilhazarog 21:52, 1 December 2011 (UTC)

That's helpful I guess. I'm aware of three separate efforts which are currently underway to bring better maps to the UESP. Our previous maps have made headlines and I have no doubt the eventual Google API map will outshine the large static image type. Lukish_ Tlk Cnt 13:33, 2 December 2011 (UTC)
I don't know about the Game Banshee map, a lot of the locations seem to be out of place. They're not in entirely wrong locations but they're not exact either. It makes that map hard to reference unless all you want is the most basic idea of where a place is, like a caricature. I'm not happy that the only map on the article rigjt now is missing a few major cities and holds, but I don't think the Game Banshee map is a good short term replacement either.76.181.75.250 07:53, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
to 76.181.75.250: What are you you talking about. the current map is missing one hold, several capital cities, and all of the major towns. The Game Banshee map has every location. Even if it isn't in the exactly correct place, its way better than the current one.--Ohnoitsmangofett 04:54, 5 December 2011 (UTC)
Replacing one broken map with another broken map doesnt fix the problem though. I am not against a short term replacement. I'm just saying there have to be better short term replacements we can use. Going with the Game banshee map without looking at alternatives first is lazy.76.181.75.250 23:53, 5 December 2011 (UTC)
Really? And what alternatives are YOU suggesting? — Unsigned comment by Llwynn (talkcontribs) at 03:34 on 15 December 2011 (UTC)

Cleared

once i go to a site shown on the map, sometimes when I kill off the ncp or solve the puzzel, the word 'cleared' will appear under the site name on the map. does this mean i have completed all tasks associated with the site? and don't have to go there any more? so for those sites that do not have the 'cleared marker' means that i need to keep going there until i get the cleared marker? what about all those farms, am i supposed to wipe them out as well to get a cleared marker. what is the qualifier for getting a cleared marker???? penny/plp5458Plp5458 02:37, 16 December 2011 (UTC)

Cleared seems to be an indication that you have defeated all enemies located within. Creatures, NPCs, what have you. I always get the 'Cleared' notice after I've killed everything. I know this because I frequently move in and out of dungeons to sell things off as I dig deeper so I can get everything (OCD looter up in here). I can't fathom what else it would be for, since non-quest related dungeons can also be 'Cleared'.
Do not mistake; 'Cleared' dungeons still seem to repopulate after a time, though the time for re-population is longer from my experience. I know for a fact that I have killed the Dragon at the Shearpoint Word Wall about 3 or 4 times, and it's been 'Cleared' ever since I first killed it and the Dragon Priest originally located there (though he doesn't respawn, hehe). ALL loot also seems to respawn in most dungeons, including boss containers, chests with more than minor loot, and stuff you find laying about outside of containers (save artifacts and 'rare' items, like Skill Books).
Hope this helped! --Zmedaris 06:24, 6 January 2012 (UTC)
I seems to me the "Cleared" status might come from having defeated the boss and/or a given number (possibly spesific for the dungeon, of course) of enemies, as I have at least once got the "Cleared" status on a dungeon with several enemies left. It happened when I had abandoned for a while a quest long enough for the dungeon to respawn. Then I returned and restarted clearing the dungeon. I do not remember the details, but I think there were some three-four enemies left when I got the "Cleared" on the dungeon. It would be nice if someone with competence in reading the game code could look into it.
I am not sure, as it happened some weeks ago, but I think the dungeon might have been "Swindler's Den" during the quest "In My Time Of Need". --MortenOSlash 06:30, 7 January 2012 (UTC)
When a dungeon says cleared next to its name it means all enemies are dead in the interior and exterior areas. You can tell when this happens when you can hear a sound after you kill the last enemy in a dungeon.--Ohnoitsmangofett 01:57, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
That is how I think it should have been, but since I have experienced it, I know there are occasions where it is not so, and there seems to me, based on my experiences, to be occasions where you have not completed the dungeon before it respawns, or something similar. --MortenOSlash 21:00, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
I don't think a dungeon has to be cleared before it respawns. --Ohnoitsmangofett 23:56, 20 January 2012 (UTC)

() And my positive observation is that it does not have to be cleared before it respawns. I just needs time left alone. --MortenOSlash 06:49, 21 January 2012 (UTC)

Tamriel

Has anyone put together a complete map of Tamriel for 4E 201 yet? — Unsigned comment by 173.53.79.191 (talk) at 15:14 on 27 January 2012 (UTC)

Not as far as I know. There wouldn't be any huge need, the only thing that has changed is that Morrowind was destroyed. If you look around google images you may find something though.RIM 15:29, 27 January 2012 (UTC)
Are you kidding? The world is completely different, politically. Elsweyr and Valenwood are in the Aldmeri dominion, Argonians have part of Morrowind, Hammerfell secceded from the empire, the Dunmer now own Solstheim, it's a whole new place. — Unsigned comment by 203.59.124.80 (talk) at 11:31 on 11 February 2012
The world looks the same, by this it is meant that only Morrowind looks visually different from the Morrowind map available. Also, who owns which province has no bearing on a new map, we don't show politics on a map. Otherwise it wouldn't be a map. A map shows directions. --kiz talkemail 14:47, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
There is such a thing as a political map, hell, we host one here. However, most of our maps are regional. The problem with creating a political map is that its not entirely clear who controls what now. It isn't entirely clear who controls what now. It's not clear if southern Hammerfell is contested or if the Thalmor have truly been defeated, likewise, I looked for an answer about what exactly happened with the Argonian invasion of Morrowind, and didn't find an answer. Bethesda likes having ambiguity with its games, so that plot-holes are less likely to develop. Once more information come forward, making a political map will be simple enough. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 15:35, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

Map Bug - Squares of the local map randomly disappear

I have found that sometimes parts of my local map will simply disappear, even though I've been through that area before. Usually, I notice it in town, but that might just be because I use the map more in towns. The missing area is always a perfect square. It just turns black, as if I hadn't explored it yet. Re-exploring it restores the missing area.

Anyone else who has seen it happen, please report it here. If I'm not the only one, then I'll write a section about this bug. 62.140.252.8 00:58, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

You mean like there is gone a part of the local map you know you have been? I think I have observed something like it on me PC version. I can not say for sure it is a square, so I can not confirm that. --MortenOSlash 13:41, 4 March 2012 (UTC)
I've gotten this frequently on every bethesda game since oblivion.

I have never observed this in Skyrim nor Oblivion, but I found it frequently in Morrowind. —MortenOSlash (talk) 10:38, 1 December 2012 (GMT)
This happens to me constantly in Skyrim, often while exploring large areas like the Soul Cairn especially, but I've never seen it in Oblivion or Morrowind. Except that I find that the missing areas are usually rectangular, not square. --Morrolan (talk) 17:05, 14 July 2013 (GMT)
I observed this last night while exploring the Soul Cairn from Dawnguard's questline. I was trying to explore thoroughly and started to notice rectangular areas of "unexplored terrain" appearing in places that I had explored, and re-explored. I'm using some mods, but no UI mods or anything changing the way maps work. 67.168.160.232 23:42, 20 July 2013 (GMT)
Thanks, I've marked it as confirmed on the article. — ABCface 23:45, 20 July 2013 (GMT)
This has been happening to me too. Seems Solitude is especially prone. I know they answer will most likely be no, but does anyone have a solution? Be it a mod or .ini setting, or maybe even an idea of how to reduce the frequency of this happening. It does seem to me that the chances of a new black square/rectangle appearing is greater right after previously exploring one that previously appeared. Also I haven't noticed it occuring upon entering a city, but after a bit of time. 86.180.252.164 23:05, 6 April 2014 (GMT)

() This bug is so frustrating for me :-( It did not occur in the time Skyrim was released but since some patches after. It really hinders my compulsion neurosis to explore all of the fog - so i can not play the game at all. The bug is not caused by anything you do to the game files. I can say this because i have actually reformated my drive and ran the game in a virgin state. The bug didn't appear for a few hours (I explored the area between Helgen and Riverwood). When I was pleased with the bug being gone and trying to reach Riverwood the whole area was infected with the black squares again...— Unsigned comment by 213.47.226.49 (talk) at 10:36 on 4 November 2014 (UTC)

Happens to me all the time. Big chunks of Riverwood are very prone to disappearing until I re-explore them. Anyplace on the local map will do it. It's exactly the same thing that happened all the time in Oblivion. Bug never fixed. (I think I saw it in Morrowind, too, but not sure about that.)— Unsigned comment by 71.15.15.134 (talk) at 01:01 on 1 September 2015 (UTC)

() The local maps in Riverwood & Whiterun randomly cloud up, but I have yet to see this problem in the other mapped areas (i.e. this only happens in a city map). I've tried to consistently re-create what happens, but there's no obvious pattern to this. Re-exploring/going to the cloudy spots do not make them safe from becoming cloudy again. My game is new & no mods are/have ever been installed. Since this has been happening to others for the last 4 years, I don't think that this bug will be fixed any time soon. Missing Locations

Sky Haven Temple is not marked on the sites Skyrim map. Could someone add it please. The Silencer has spokenTalk 00:38, 9 May 2012 (UTC)

Unless someone added within the few seconds since I looked, it already is. If you're having trouble finding a location, you can just visit their page, all of the map locations are linked their. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 00:45, 9 May 2012 (UTC)
The location marker is missing though, if you zoom out one step you can see the markers for the places around it but there is no marker for the Temple. The Silencer has spokenTalk 00:51, 9 May 2012 (UTC)
I disabled that map marker (and probably one or two other similar cases) because its coordinates are messed up -- it ends up getting displayed somewhere in Eastmarch. The underlying reason is that it's actually not on the main map, but in its own "Karthspire" world map. And that map uses a different coordinate system, unlike nearly every other secondary map (e.g., all cities). If someone can figure out what coordinate offset is used for the Karthspire world map, I can enter meaningful numbers and re-enable the marker. Until then, however, displaying the marker would not be useful. --NepheleTalk 01:39, 9 May 2012 (UTC)
Understandable. Would it be possible to post a list of all the disabled ones, because I am attempting to count all (yes thats right ALL) map markers that can be found, and I don't want to miss any. Some call me insane, I just stare blankly back at them... The SilencerTalk 02:58, 9 May 2012 (UTC)
The offset is found in the ONAM field of the enclosing WRLD. Most other mapmarkers are either not really in their secondary map, or the WRLD has an offset of 0. Japhet's Folly and Giant's Grove mapmarker are exceptions. Anyway, all three cases are fixed and enabled now. --Alfwyn (talk) 21:55, 18 December 2013 (GMT)

Where does the background image for UESP's google api Map come from? Is it obtainable as a single (large) file?

If one wants to help adding markers to that map, how can he obtain permission to do so?

A much-needed improvement would be to make possible to toggle the visibility of the markers. And have them grouped by some categories and toggle the visibility of those. — Unsigned comment by Satori78 (talkcontribs) at 12:20 on 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Touching the Sky map locations

I just went through all of the locations involved in the quest Touching the Sky and noted that most of the map links on their articles don't link to anyplace useful on the map, but instead to an insignificant spot near Raldbthar. This includes Forgotten Vale, Glacial Crevice, and Sharpslope Cave. This is evidently due to these locations not being physically located on the main Skyrim map. I checked the map link for Fort Dawnguard, and it also links to the same spot, so there are likely other articles with this same issue. I'm assuming that the map link is automatically generated by the Place Summary template. Should these articles' map links be disabled or changed to link to something useful (if this is possible)? --Xyzzy Talk 16:21, 9 March 2013 (GMT)

Skyrim becomes cloudy after returning from DLC locations

I've discovered a minor, harmless glitch in the PS3 version of the game. After returning from new locations added via DLC (Fort Dawnguard and Castle Volkihar occasionally; most commonly when returning to Skyrim from Solstheim) the entire world map menu becomes engulfed in a thick fog. Only locations with higher elevations, such as The Rift, and The Throat Of The World, are not clouded over. — Unsigned comment by 216.186.185.107 (talk) at 15:22 on 20 April 2013 (GMT)

I've since confirmed that it only happens if you Fast-Travel to and from these DLC locations. For example, Fast-Travelling from Solstheim to Skyrim produces the heavy fog all across Skyrim for the remainder of your gameplay session. However taking the ship back from Solstheim to Skyrim will not.
I've also confirmed that the effect is temporary. You can freely save your game after it occurs, turn the game off, come back to it later, and Skyrim's Fast-Travel map will once again be free of the thick fog.
As I said, minor, harmless glitch. But I felt it might be worth noting, if anybody thought it was in any way particularly noteworthy. — Unsigned comment by 216.186.185.107 (talk) at 15:30 on 25 April 2013 (GMT)

Missing tiles on Skyrim map but not on Solstheim?

I have been looking forward to the Solstheim map for so long time now. Good job! It seems even better than the Skyrim map! Area south of Skyrim

I don't know quite where this belongs; if you know a better place, move it there and tip off my talk page, thanks. Anyway I was out walking near Southfringe Sanctum, and I discovered that it's possible to walk over the mountains to the east of Southfringe, and head towards Cyrodiil. You can't get down from the Jeralls actually into Cyrodiil, because the "ground" texture runs out. There appears to be a rudimentary White Gold Tower visible in the distance, and I think I identified Lake Rumare and Niben Bay as well. The White Gold Tower appears much too large relative to its surroundings, it kind of towers over the whole of City Isle.

Anyway this does appear to be evidence suggesting that at some point there was something to do with White Gold Tower at least planned for inclusion in Skyrim, so it's interesting in that sense. Do we want to map this area? It's well to the south of the current UESP map, and obviously doesn't have any fast travel markers in it. --Morrolan (talk) 01:31, 20 August 2013 (GMT)

Naw, it's just there because it is possible to see the area from within skyrim, so for continuity, the tower is there. It is unlikely that anything involving the imperial city was planned for skyrim. Jeancey (talk) 01:36, 20 August 2013 (GMT)
I think one of the theories as to why so much non-Skyrim was included in the gameworld was to give the developers a sense of the scale of Skyrim in relation to the previous games. Piphil (talk) 11:54, 20 August 2013

A discovery

I just discovered a very serviceable road that is a major shortcut from Whiterun to Ivarstead. Is there any interest in this? Sniffles (talk) 07:40, 27 August 2013 (GMT)

Can you explain a little bit what you are thinking about? A shortcut or some route unmarked on the map? Roads that are not marked with signs when you follow it? —MortenOSlash (talk) 17:31, 27 August 2013 (GMT)
It's a concealed roadway. Unpaved but as wide as a regular road. The location is very obscure. Both ends of it aren't visible until you are actually on the road. Sniffles (talk) 19:43, 27 August 2013 (GMT)
Fair enough. Something like one of the trails, like the trail up south from Lost Knife Hideout? As far as I can remember there is nowhere described routes between the cities and towns as for now, so where are you suggesting your description should be added, and as opposed to or alternative what existing description? —MortenOSlash (talk) 20:32, 27 August 2013 (GMT)
Can you describe how to find this road? If it's actually useful, it may deserve a mention, perhaps on the Ivarstead page. --Xyzzy Talk 01:59, 28 August 2013 (GMT)
Okay, I'm partly full of it. It is designated when traveling south. Stand on the road from Whiterun next to the Ritual Stone. There are 2 rock cairns on the south side of the road and a very faint road going into a shallow valley SSE of the Ritual Stone. Follow the road. It switchbacks up over the knee on the ENE side of the Throat of the World, drops into a shallow valley and there any indications of a road stops. Follow the easy contour of the ground roughly southeast as it slopes downhill. It eventually comes out just below the pass of the road from Lost Knife where the ruined building is with the door frame lying on the middle of the trail. At the summit of the road if you look nearly straight up you will see a sharp promontory, the Skyrim equivalent of Dive Rock. That is the easternmost corner of the flat area High Hrothgar is on. The promontory extends east from the gate where the Whirlwind Sprint is learned. Standing on the promontory and looking straight down you will see the road and the precipitous knee of the mountain beyond. (Sorry about this edit. Wisp mommy, 2 bears, some vampires and a dragon crashed me into a reboot as I was trying to getpos). Sniffles (talk) 02:35, 28 August 2013 (GMT)

() I thought I had been pretty much everywhere in Skyrim, but it turns out I had never taken this path. It is a nice shortcut from Whiterun to Ivarstead and the Rift. It meets up with the steep mountain path that runs by the abandoned well that spawns the Wispmother that I often take. I don't know that there is any article that documents these kinds of paths, but it seems like we should have these somewhere. --Xyzzy Talk 03:34, 28 August 2013 (GMT)

My thoughts exactly. Wow! Never knew that was there! And it only takes the lowest grade of Whirlwind Sprint from that promontory to go splat on that road. While I hesitate to say it, what is needed is a map that shows all the roads, paths, trails etc. If someone could come up with a workable/editable map I'd be glad to contribute. Sniffles (talk) 06:23, 28 August 2013 (GMT)
Sniffles: I'm not sure about the "workable map" part, but I can get screenshots if you want.
Xyzzy: Maybe it can go to the unmarked places page, or if not, it can go to both of the two place pages. Or maybe the two holds' pages. Idk.. xD ~ Psylocke 14:32, 28 August 2013 (GMT)

I'd even try screenshots but I don't know the limitations. Will they all be the same scale and no clouds? I'm thinking ideally that I would toss an image or images into Photoshop and scale the pixels to the Getpos. Sniffles (talk) 08:53, 30 August 2013 (GMT)

Editing map links?

I found a link on the map that links to the wrong page (specifically, the link from the Rannveig's Fast icon goes to the nonexistent page "Skyrim:Rannveig") but I can't figure out how to change the link in the bubble that appears when you click on it. Can someone explain how to do this? it would be useful if I encounter another erroneous link.Bookwyrm1357 (talk) 22:56, 27 December 2013 (GMT)

It's a bug in the system that doesn't seem to recognise anything after an apostrophe in the names. I've emailed the owner already but had no response. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 23:00, 27 December 2013 (GMT)
EDIT: It's been solved, but the solution has yet to be implemented on the main servers. Should be soon, hopefully. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 23:08, 27 December 2013 (GMT)
Ah. Thank you for the information.Bookwyrm1357 (talk) 00:10, 28 December 2013 (GMT)
Fix is active now. --Alfwyn (talk) 18:07, 4 January 2014 (GMT)

Bruma, North of Dawnstar

Not sure if anyone else has noticed this, but Bruma (linking to Oblivion:Bruma) appears a bit North of Dawnstar. --Rezalon (talk) 03:15, 7 November 2015 (UTC)

It has already been brought up, but it hasn't changed it seems. I'm not sure who is able to edit maps, so I'm going to put it to the Administrator Noticeboard. -- SarthesArai Talk 13:07, 7 November 2015 (UTC)
