Mercenary Veteran (Knight)

Mercenary Veterans are Orcs encountered throughout Wrothgar and the Reach. Defeating one of them in combat will grant you the One Last Brawl achievement.

When they reach approximately 1000 Health, they will stop fighting, bow their heads and wait for you to land the killing blow. You must kill them to receive the achievement; bringing their health down to the point where they cease fighting will not count towards achievement progress.

There are three different kinds of Mercenary Veterans: a knight-class opponent in heavy armor wielding a one-handed weapon and shield, a vanquisher-class opponent wielding a single sword, and a berserker-class opponent dual-wielding weapons.

Skills and Abilities

Knight

Quick Strike

A basic melee attack that does minor physical damage.

Fiery Breath

The enemy breathes fire as indicated by a red cone. This attack does moderate flame damage over time and snares all enemies within the cone. This attack can be blocked to reduce damage.

Lava Whip

The enemy winds up a flaming whip that does moderate flame damage to the target. This attack can be blocked to set the enemy off balance.

Vanquisher

Quick Strike

A basic melee attack that does minor physical damage.

Heavy Attack

A heavy melee attack that does moderate physical damage. It can be blocked to set the enemy off balance.

Block

The vanquisher blocks with its one-handed blade.

Retaliation

The vanquisher jumps and performs a spinning strike, hitting and staggering their target. This can be blocked, setting them off balance. Retaliation is always used after a successful block, which then makes it impossible for the target to block this attack.

Javelin

The vanquisher takes out a javelin from behind their back and tosses it at their target, dealing damage and staggering them. This can be interrupted to set them off balance. This attack is used more often when standing further out from the vanquisher.

Berserker

Quick Strike

A basic melee attack that does minor physical damage.

Blood Craze

The enemy slashes at you twice, doing moderate physical damage over time to the player. This attack also heals the enemy over time.

Agony

The enemy stuns the player for a short time. Taking damage from any source will break the stun, but the player may choose to break free from it instead. After the stun ends, this spell also does moderate magical damage over time to the player. This spell can be interrupted to set the enemy off balance. Blocking will prevent the stun.

Roll Dodge

The enemy can perform a roll dodge to avoid incoming damage.

They will repeatedly taunt you, saying:

Mercenary Veteran "Think you can grant me a good death, worm?"

Mercenary Veteran "Fight me, you tusking coward!"

Mercenary Veteran "Tusking weakling!"

Mercenary Veteran "Time to prove your worth!"

Mercenary Veteran "Too scared you'll lose?"

Mercenary Veteran "You! Stand and fight!"

Mercenary Veteran "Will you not stand and fight?"

Achievements

There is one achievement associated with this enemy:

Notes

• They can be found with a number of dead bodies around them (including snow bears), which will despawn after you kill them.
• Mercenary Veterans defeated in The Reach count towards the completion of One Last Brawl achivement.
