Walkthrough[edit]
When you emerge from the Old Mine, you'll get a journal entry prompting you to return to the Order Manor. There, you'll find Thoralf in his usual place by the main door; talk to him, and he'll tell you that an assassin broke in and tried to kill Helgarth. Helgarth, of course, isn't dead - he has the would-be asssassin in custody in the map room.
Go down and interrogate the man; in exchange for his life, he'll tell you about a large rebel camp near Bruma that's planning to launch an attack on the city. You can kill him or let him go after that - it makes no difference.
Now you have to go warn the countess of Bruma. She'll tell you that she thinks you'll be able to handle it (you single-handedly took care of the Oblivion Crisis, after all), so you'll have to go to the camp by yourself (unless you brought your knights along for backup).
The camp is accessible only through Boreal Stone Cave; there's a small opening in the ceiling at the back of the main room. Go through it, and you'll end up on a high ledge overlooking a small valley housing the encampment. If you have spells or a bow, now's a perfect time to snipe the rebels (don't bother with the guy in the red robe - he can't die before talking to you). Before or after dealing with them, drop down into the fenced area, talk to the battlemage, then kill him and whoever else is left. Be sure to get the map and key!
Once they're all dead, you can go through the main gate and back up around the path, which will put you right above the cave entrance - drop down, and go back through the cave to get the final journal entry.

10 | Damn! A rockfall. The exit from the mine is buried. I hope that at least Helgarth made it.
15 | Outside at last. I should go back to the manor for now and reequip . I doubt that this was all the rebel camps.
20 | Thoralf greeted me at the manor's entrance and told me that during the night one of the rebels entered the building and attempted to assassinate Helgarth. But he overpowered the man and is questioning the fiend now in the map room.
30 | The assassin admitted being sent by the rebels. For the gift of his freedom, he told me that a large group of them gathers to attack Bruma. He marked a collection point on my map and disappeared. Whereas I should make my way to Bruma. The Countess must be warned.
45 | The Countess of Bruma has asked me to deal with the rebel leader's threat. So, on to the camp that the assassin marked on my map.
50 | A hidden valley. | |
55 | I found the camp of the rebels who are planning to assault Bruma. Yet it seems the leader of this scum isn't here. The renegade battlemage would not tell me his name.
60 | The renegade battle mage is dead. I should search his belongings for clues.
100 | With the key, and most of all the map, in my pack, I left the valley. I should take a look at the spot on the map that the battlemage had with him. I'm sure that there is something important recorded. (If you haven't started Ruler of Cyrodiil) or |
- The following empty quest stages were omitted from the table: 5, 25, 35, 40.
- Notes
- Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
- Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in random order.
- If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
- It is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering
setstage ODDHQ01Attack stage
, wherestage
is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages. See SetStage for more information.
