Marius Caro

Marius Caro is the Count of Leyawiin. His wife is the Countess Alessia Caro, daughter of Countess Arriana Valga of Chorrol. For 7,000 gold, he will sell you a house in town. He is related to two quests: Mazoga the Orc and Knights of the White Stallion. After you complete these quests, he will make you an honorary Knight-Errant yourself, and thereafter you can collect a reward of 100 gold each from him for bringing Black Bows from the local Black Bow Bandit gang nearby.

The count wakes up early in the morning at 6am and spends the first two hours of his day relaxing in his private quarters. He is in attendance in Castle Leyawiin County Hall between 8am and 6pm. The only deviation in his attendance is on Sundas where the Count heads to The Great Chapel of Zenithar for worship between 8am and 10am. After a two-hour break in his private quarters, he returns to the County Hall at 8pm to attend the Royal Banquet. At 11pm he will return to his quarters, before going to bed at midnight.

He wears a black & burgundy outfit with gold trimmed shoes, and a leveled piece of jewelry. He also has a sizable amount of gold, keys to the castle, and a key to the Secret Room.

When you first meet him, he will politely introduce himself:

"Marius Caro, by grace of the Nine, Count Leyawiin. You are a stranger to me, but well-met."

"I am proud of my family's tradition of service to Leyawiin and its people. We face many challenges, but Gods willing, we shall prevail."

When spoken to again, he will say:

"I'm sure you have many pressing affairs. I won't keep you."

Quest-Related Dialogue

Allies for Bruma

During Allies for Bruma, you can ask him for help. If the Oblivion Gate outside of the city is still open, he won't help you:

"Leyawiin is beset by enemies. The Empire does nothing to help us. Even before this crisis, I did not have enough men to patrol my borders. Now, daedra are pouring out of an Oblivion Gate on our very doorstep! No, I don't have any men to spare. Bruma will have to look to its own defense."

Chancellor Ocato

"He and the rest of the Elder Council care nothing for Cyrodiil. They focus obsessively on the provinces, leaving us to fend for ourselves."

Leyawiin

"Our only hope to weather this Oblivion invasion is to defend our walls and be damned to what happens outside them."

During this time, guards and citizens alike will comment on the Count's orders:

Leyawiin

"Guard stays inside the city walls for the duration of the crisis. Count Caro's orders. We're not going to risk another Kvatch here."

"Leyawiin stands alone. That's what Count Caro says. Only our brave Guardsmen to keep the hordes of Oblivion at bay."

When the gate is closed, however, he will help out:

"Well, with the Oblivion Gate near Leyawiin closed, I suppose the immediate threat is lessened. I will do as you ask. Let no one say Leyawiin did not do its part to uphold the Empire."

If asked again:

"I have given you the help you asked for, Bruma's fate is out of my hands."

Buying a house in Leyawiin

He is selling a house in the east of town:

"There happens to be a small home for sale in the middle of town. It's a quaint building, small but tidy."

I don't think I'm ready to buy.

"Then stop wasting my time."

7000 gold is too much for me.

"I doubt it will sell anytime soon. If you manage to raise that much, come see me again." If you accept, he will point out its current state:

You're asking 7000 gold? Done.

"Very well. I'll have my steward register the deed of ownership. Here is your key. It's a modest home in the center of town. It's a might devoid of furnishings, so you may want to pay a visit to Gundalas at Best Goods and Guarantees. He can fix you up."

Mazoga the Orc

Leyawiin guards and castle staff will point you towards Count Marius when you ask them about Leyawiin, starting the quest Mazoga the Orc:

"Orc named Mazoga says she's a knight. I doubt it. The Count wants it looked into. Why don't you talk to him? The Count appears for audiences in the County Hall near the throne weekdays between 8 AM and 4 PM."

Citizens can also be heard gossiping:

"The Count's been asking questions about some Orc named Mazoga at the castle... she claims she's a knight."

After this, upon meeting the count for the first time, he will urge you to help him out after introducing himself:

"Perhaps you would like to do a service for County Leyawiin?"

Service to Leyawiin

"I need your help. An Orc named Mazoga here claims to be a knight, but will not reveal her business. Find out why she is here, and report to me, and you will earn a reward suitable for those who serve Leyawiin."

If spoken to again before speaking to Mazoga:

"Have you anything new to report?"

"I hope you've been successful?"

Service to Leyawiin

"Did you find out why the Orc is here?"

Not yet.

"Then I await your report."

His goodbye:

"Prompt attention to this matter will be rewarded."

After speaking to Mazoga:

She wants Weebam-Na.

"Then you will get Weebam-Na for her. The Argonian is a well-known hunter; he has a house in town."

After Mazoga says she wants to go to Fisherman's Rock:

She wants to go to Fisherman's Rock.

"Then guide her to Fisherman's Rock. Please."

Should Mazoga die during the quest, Count Marius will be angered by your failure to keep her alive, and will no longer be able to be engaged for a normal conversation, thus forfeiting the subsequent quest:

"I hold you responsible for Mazoga's death. Your disappointing performance proves you are not suited for service to County Leyawiin."

Strangely enough, he will tell you the exact same thing if Weebam-Na dies before his part of the quest is fulfilled, even if Mazoga is actually alive.

After the battle at Fisherman's Rock, he will thank you when you tell him about Mazoga's intentions:

Service to Leyawiin

"Have you learned why the Orc is here?"

To avenge a murdered friend

"Such vengeance is a noble deed. Leyawiin thanks you for your service. And I have a fitting reward for such noble deeds. I address my offer to you and your friend. Would you like to become knights-errant?"

Knight-Errant

"I have created a chivalric Order of the White Stallion. Find and kill the leader of the Black Bow Bandits, the Orc named Black Brugo. If you succeed, I will bestow on both you and Mazoga the titles of Knights-Errant of the White Stallion for your service to Leyawiin."

The quest Knights of the White Stallion will then start. Once this quest is finished, the Leyawiin townfolk can be heard saying:

"I hear the Count's got someone to sort out that business with Mazoga the so-called knight."

When you ask him about Black Brugo, he will provide some details:

"The outlaw, Black Brugo, is a menace to County Leyawiin. They call his marauders 'Black Bow Bandits' because they use black bows. Find Black Brugo, and execute him for his crimes, and I will make both you and your friend Mazoga Knights-Errant of the White Stallion."

How shall we locate Black Brugo?

"In her shadowy past, your friend Mazoga might have had contacts with outlaws. Ask her."

When you next return to him after having spoken to Mazoga, he will say:

"Have you found Black Brugo?"

"I hope you are here to tell me of Black Brugo's death."

Black Brugo

"What news do you have of Black Brugo?"

None yet.

"Then you'll be eager to be on your way. I won't keep you...."

I know where to find him.

"Then it is only a matter of time? I await your report."

On leaving conversation he will remind you of your potential reward:

"Remember. A knight's title shall be your reward."

Once Black Brugo is dead, he will be pleased:

"What news do you have of Black Brugo?"

Depending on whether Mazoga is still alive, he will give slightly differing answers:

Black Brugo is dead.

"Justice has been done. And henceforth, [Mazoga and] you shall be known as Knights of the White Stallion. May I present you with the perquisites of your rank... a key to White Stallion Lodge and a shield bearing the arms of County Leyawiin. [Mazoga's key and shield shall be delivered to her directly.] And I promise you a bounty of 100 gold for each Black Bow you bring me."

At this point, he will be happy to buy Black Bows:

"Each Black Bow you bring me means another Black Bow Bandit slain."

When you ask him about the Knights of the White Stallion, he will provide details:

"I created the Order of the White Stallion to honor free adventurers who perform noteworthy services for County Leyawiin. I have dedicated our royal hunting retreat, the White Stallion Lodge, to the exclusive use of White Stallion Knights. The lodge lies a short distance north of Leyawiin, on the west bank of the Niben. At sunrise, the view across the water is quite picturesque."

He will part ways with:

"Good day, Sir Knight."

You will also hear the citizens of Leyawiin comment on your deeds and the Count's new chivalric order:

"Count Leyawiin created a new order of knights -- the White Stallion -- for the ones who defeated Black Brugo."

"Black Brugo, chief of the Black Bow Bandits, is dead. And the Count made his killers Knights of the White Stallion."

"Count Leyawiin placed a bounty on the heads of the surviving Black Bow Bandits."

"The Count made that Orc, Mazoga, into a knight? Well, well. Next thing, we'll be making horses into knights."

Black Bow Bandits

From now on, the Count will pay you 100 gold for every black bow you bring him. When you speak to him after this, he will now say:

"How goes the battle?"

"How are you faring in your campaign against the remnants of the Black Bow Bandits, Sir Knight?"

Black Bows

"I see you have a Black Bow. Would you like to turn it in for the bounty?"

No, thank you.

"Very well. You may bring it to me at any time and receive your reward."

Yes, thank you.

"Here is your reward. Well done, and thank you."

Should you have more than one bow in your inventory, he instead says:

Yes, thank you.

"Here is your reward. And this other Black Bow? Would you like to turn it in as well?"

Rumors

Upper class citizens of the Empire can be heard remarking positively about the Count:

"Marius Caro and Alessia Valga...now Alessia Caro. That's a fine match, two best families in Cyrodiil. They'll be on the Elder Council, just you wait."

"There's been trouble with smugglers and Khajiit bandits in the Trans-Niben, but Marius Caro is taking steps to deal with the problem."

Janonia Aurunceia is also gushing with praise for her master:

"Januarius and I have been in service to three generations of Caros. We're very proud of Count Marius and his lovely new bride."

A number of citizens will also remark on his choice of spouse. Imperial supremacist Betto Plotius will tell you:

"I've lived in Leyawiin all my life, and I must say, the Count has found himself a pretty little bride...and a smart one, too."

Meanwhile Witseidutsei will comment:

"We all love Count Marius, and his father before him... Arkay bless his soul... such a fine young man. And now, his new wife, so beautiful, so fine. And wise? Oh, yes! The new Lady Leyawiin is daughter to Countess Arriana Valga, County Chorrol, and so she knows just how the county should be run. Lady Alessia tells Count Marius exactly what to do... and he does as she says..."

During Ahdarji's Heirloom, asking beggars in town about hidden secrets in the castle will have them reveal a darker side to the Count:

"I've heard of a hidden torture chamber. They say that Count Marius interrogates Argonian immigrants from Black Marsh. The servants whisper that the Argonians are dragged into the basement and never seen again."

• Marius is mentioned in a loading screen you may see while in Leyawiin: "Marius Caro is Count Leyawiin, and his recent bride, the lovely and cultivated Alessia Caro, is the daughter of the righteous and reliable Countess Arriana Valga of Chorrol."
