Detailed Walkthrough[edit]
This quest is started from random dialogue from Town Gossip topic, but only after you gain 10 points of Leyawiin reputation. (Note: This quest requires membership in the Mages Guild, as you'll need access to the Arcane University.)
Tsavi, court mage, is rumored to have found Topal the Pilot's notes, which tell where he hid his loot. Talk to her, and she'll confirm it, but the notes are encoded and the map is protected with a spell. She suggests going to the Imperial City to talk to Boderi Farano. Boderi is willing to help, but she has to run an errand first, which will delay her... unless you can do it for her? Of course you will! All you have to do is take some papers down to Druja in the Skingrad Mages Guild. Before you do that, though, you need to go over to the Chironasium and talk to Delmar - he needs a couple varla stones so he can undo the enchantment.
Once you've delivered the papers and retrieved the stones, return to Boderi. She'll hand over the translation; take it over to Delmar, and he'll tell you to come back in a few days (you'll get another journal entry). The map will reveal the location of the shipwreck, which is in Topal Bay, southeast of the lighthouse. The ocean floor here is very deep, so waterbreathing items or magic is a must. When you get down there, look for the windows on the rear cabin; one of them acts as an entrance. All you'll find inside is a large chest; activate it, and you'll be teleported to an empty version of the Blackwood Company hall.
Two of the doors here will ask you riddles; the answer to one is "Five", and the other is "Ancient Forest". You're looking for a large crystal; activate it, and it will ask if you want to leave or keep going. If you choose to leave, you'll be teleported back to the ship (and you'll lose 1 fame); otherwise, it will send you on to the next stage. There are three stages here; when you make it to the end of last one (the pseudo-Ayleid ruin), Eltiar the Enlightened will appear and speak to you. Long ago, he chose to travel the planes; as a reward for making it through his trap rooms, he'll let you choose one item: Eltiar's Golden Bow, Staff of Topal the Pilot, or Guiding Amulet. Once you've made your choice, he'll send you back himself. Return to Tsavi to tell here what happened, and the quest will be complete.
Journal Entries[edit]

---|---|---|
Stage | Finishes Quest | Journal Entry |
1 | ||
5 | Rumours have spread that Tsavi has found Topal the Pilot's notes that indicate where the Helmsman hid his treasures. I should talk to Tsavi. | |
10 | Tsavi was quite surprised that almost every citizen knew about her find. Nevertheless, she willingly accepted my offer of help in deciphering Topal the Pilot's notes and studying a piece of an ancient map. Tsavi recommended contacting Boderi Farano from the Mystic Archives, in the Arcane University. | |
15 | Boderi Farano asked me to take some papers to Druja at the Skingrad Mages Guild. Delmar will need two Varla Stones to remove the protection spell. Expensive. But perhaps the path to the treasure will indeed be revealed? | |
17 | Boderi Farano's papers are with Druja, but I still need to find two Varla Stones. | |
25 | Boderi Farano's papers are with Druja, and the Varla Stones are in my bag. It's time to visit Boderi Farano again. | |
30 | It turned out that the author of the notes was not Topal the Pilot himself, but his assistant, a certain Eltiar. He described the storm that overtook his ship, carrying the artefacts collected by Topal to Summerset Isle. The map also indicates the exact place of the wreck of the ship. But it is still unreadable due to the protective spell. On to Delmar. | |
30 | Delmar asked me to wait two days for him to remove the spell from the map. | |
35 | It's time to visit Delmar and see whether he has removed the protective spell from the map. | |
40 | Delmar managed to remove the protective spell from the map. The location of the shipwreck is revealed on the map, and it's not that far from Leyawiin. | |
50 | Eltiar's ship was a trap. I need to find a way out of here. | |
55 | I found a large crystal which somehow spoke inside my head. I have been transported to another trap-room. | |
60 | Another large crystal, and yet another trap-room to get out of. | |
65 | I made it through the trap-rooms, but where am I now? | |
70 | Eltiar decided to break his connection with Nirn and look for the past ages in Aetherius. Or in Mundus, or wherever Auriel sends him. I need to tell Tsavi the story of Eltiar. I think she will be interested to know how it ended. | |
100 | Tsavi thanked me for bringing Eltiar's story to her. There was no treasure, but Eltiar's reward may be of some use or value to me. | |
200 | I'm safe, the crystal allowed me to leave unharmed. Nothing is gained, but nothing is lost. |
- Notes
- Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
- Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in random order.
- If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
- It is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering
setstage BANLeyawiinTopalTreasure stage
, wherestage
is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages. See SetStage for more information.
