Detailed Walkthrough

Talk to Seijfrid

You'll have to get the "Killing rats" topic before doing this quest; either during the Rangers Guild quest Sickness in the Arboretum, when a guard will refer you to Seijfrid, or by reading the notice pinned to the wall in the Imperial City Waterfront Tunnel, just outside the door to the Imperial Legion Checkpoint. Go to the Legion Checkpoint in the Waterfront Tunnel to find him. The easiest way to get there is to go through the Temple District; the Checkpoint is just inside the gate, to your left. Talk to him about hunting rats, and he'll inform you that he's offering a bounty of 50 gold a head for Dark Rats. If you accept, he'll happily give you authorization to enter the caves below.

Go to the Caves

The entrance is just down the hall, at the bottom of the long ramp toward the Waterfront; it's a manhole cover leading down to the Abandoned House basement. From there, you'll find another grate leading down to the caves themselves. Up to 28 rats may spawn down there; kill as many as you wish (be sure to collect the corpses!) then return to Seijfrid.

Collect Your Reward

Return to Seijfrid with the rats. He won't want to handle them, because they're diseased - he'll have you follow him down the hall to the furnace and toss them in. Once you've done so, talk to him again to collect your money and complete the quest. In spite of originally offering 50 gold per rat, Seijfrid will actually only pay 5 gold per rat.

10		Seijfrid Quillus, in the Imperial Legion Checkpoint, has tasked me with hunting down and killing vermin in the caves beneath the Waterfront Tunnel. A breed of dark-furred rats have been reportedly more aggressive than usual, and there is fear that they may be diseased. I am to return to Seijfrid with proof of each rat killed to be paid. I don't know how many I might find.
90		Seijfrid Quillus wants the dead rats burnt in the basement furnace. He will meet me there.
100	Finishes quest	Seijfrid Quillus paid me five gold for each of the dark-furred dead rats I brought back from the caves - I thought he'd offered more originally, but never mind. Seijfrid may need further rat-killing expeditions in the future.

• Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
• Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in random order.
• If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
• It is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering setstage BANICTunnelRatCatcherQuest stage, where stage is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages. See SetStage for more information.
