Faction Template[edit]

Re the category being in the article's namespace rather than using the namesp thing... I prefer it that way but what do you want to do with people like Tribunal:Crito_Olcinius, Bloodmoon:Jeleen and some of the others with categories at Special:Wantedcategories? I've only had one of those on the Ob/SI side and created a Category:Shivering-Factions-Undead and stuck it in Category:Oblivion-Factions-Undead. Do you want to do something similar with the MW/TR/BM ones or is there a Lurlockian stroke of inspiration I simply haven't considered? :) --RpehTalk 12:42, 26 September 2007 (EDT)

Why did you make the change to remove the rank from non-default namespaces? Wouldn't it be better to put them in the rank but in the new namespace instead? I've fixed the bug it caused (none of the ranks were working) but I'm still unsure why you want to do it like this... --RpehTCE 10:30, 9 October 2007 (EDT)
I considered that, but I noticed that none of these categories had more than 1 or 2 members in them, so creating categories for all the ranks for these factions would simply result in a lot of empty or nearly-empty categories, which aren't really that useful. Given that there are so few members from these cross-over factions to begin with, dividing them further by rank seemed to be not that necessary. --TheRealLurlock Talk 11:20, 9 October 2007 (EDT)

New Tasks[edit]

I believe you and Nephele had a pile of work for me to do when I finally got the badge? I assume it's deleting the stuff in Category:Proposed Deletion (Bot) and stuff older than 7 days in Category:Proposed Deletion. Do you still want me to go ahead with that or do you want to discuss it on IRC first? --RpehTalk 05:14, 3 October 2007 (EDT)

You can go ahead with those any time you feel up to it. It's not exactly a priority, except for the fact that several of those pages have been targets for spam-bots recently for whatever reason. Though I'm sure if you delete them they'll just attack other legit pages instead, but what can you do? However, they have been sitting there gathering digital dust for a while, so it's probably about time to trash 'em. --TheRealLurlock Talk 11:39, 3 October 2007 (EDT)
Okay. Done all the bot ones plus several of the others. There are several books I need to move around and a load of images I'm a bit less comfortable about deleting (since I know you can't get those back). What about the "Template:{Bloodmoon|Morrowind|Oblivion|Shivering|Tamriel|Tribunal} Books {A..Z} Trail" pages? I deleted the ones that had been prod'd but do we really have to prod and wait for all the others? --RpehTalk 07:54, 4 October 2007 (EDT)
Nephele was getting bored prodding all of those, so I basically said she could skip it and just prod the first in each series. As the person who created those pages, I give you permission to delete them. We never ended up using them, so it's just a lot of redundancy. --TheRealLurlock Talk 09:51, 4 October 2007 (EDT)
I thought so but decided I ought to check first. I'll do 'em later. --RpehTalk 10:19, 4 October 2007 (EDT)

Morag Tong[edit]

Hi Lurlock just wanted to thank you for the advice you gave me about entering the Morag Tong headquaters , it worked, now however I have to kill someone called Feruren Oran but whenever I attack him he uses some sort of red spell that drains my health bar in one, any tips?--Vladrus Blenwyth 16:24, 5 October 2007 (EDT)

I'm guessing, both by this and your trouble opening the lock, that you're playing a very low-level character. You might want to level up a bit with other factions before tackling the Morag Tong quests. If even the first one is causing you difficulty, some of the later ones will really be a problem. I recommend the Fighters Guild, Mages Guild, or Thieves Guild as a good starter practice. --TheRealLurlock Talk 19:05, 5 October 2007 (EDT)

Dumb Question Time![edit]

Okay, now...Let's say I have a picture that I drew, which I wish to upload for an illustration on my Nineten Spam Battle fanfic. The image came from my hand; the concept, from my hand. What is the license info for that? Somercy 11:49, 8 October 2007 (EDT)

Okay, as the image creator, you're free to choose whatever license you feel fit to put it under. I usually use "Released into the public domain..." for mine, because I don't mind that much what people do with them afterwards. If you're picky about attribution, one of the other free licenses will work, most likely the "Creative Commons Attributions Sharealike 2.5" one. If you really don't want anyone else but this site to use your image, even if they give you credit, you can use the "Image creator gave permission for upload" license, which means you give permission for it to be used here and nowhere else, no matter what. --TheRealLurlock Talk 17:26, 8 October 2007 (EDT)
Cool, thanks. Second dumb question: no more trendy hippos? I found the link on your userpage, and got excited. Somercy 07:55, 9 October 2007 (EDT)
Yeah, I'm in the process of redesigning that site, assuming I can find my webmaster again - he's kind of reclusive. Problem was it was getting so thoroughly bombarded with spam I had to basically shut it down by not allowing any new members. Prior to that, I had to delete dozens of posts every day. To give you an idea - of the 1839 registered members currently shown on the site, about 5 of those accounts are legitimate. You can feel free to browse the forums, but until I can figure out a way to keep it free from spammers while still being open to legitimate posters, I'm not considering it open for the public at this time. --TheRealLurlock Talk 11:27, 9 October 2007 (EDT)
Well, when you do find the webmaster, I did attempt to join, under the name Somercy. I have concepts and ideas mulling wildly. Somercy 10:38, 10 October 2007 (EDT)
Well, like I said, I've basically turned off the registration feature, so you won't be able to join at this time. However, I have contacted my webmaster, and we may be working on re-vamping the site in the near future. I'll be sure to let you know when it's ready for the public again. (I'll probably make an update on my User page when it happens, but it may be a little while, I don't know.) --TheRealLurlock Talk 12:32, 10 October 2007 (EDT)

New IP for you to Block[edit]

That one--> http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Special:Contributions/216.195.206.231 Thanks in advance. =) IWon'tFightUndead 11:19, 15 October 2007 (EDT)

I have no idea how to reformat this so that it's right next to the cookie. I'm sorry. =/ Feel free to move my posts around all you want, or delete them. After all, it's your talk page. =) IWon'tFightUndead 11:21, 15 October 2007 (EDT)

MW Merchants[edit]

I'm almost ready to post a completed version of the table at User:TheRealLurlock/Sandbox_VIII. But I noticed that currently the table includes NPCs who are spell merchants (e.g., Aldaril, Arielle Phiencel). Did you mean to include spell merchants, or was this supposed to be a list of just standard merchants? --NepheleTalk 19:19, 21 October 2007 (EDT)

Ah, this list was literally just copied from Daveh's sandbox, which includes all merchants, including spell-merchants. (It also mistakenly claims that a number of merchants who are NOT spell merchants have spells for sale - I think the "Magic Items" flag was triggering this glitch.) So, short answer: No, I don't need spell-merchants, as we already did all those before. Now, if an NPC sells both spells AND other merchandise, they should still be included, mainly because this list will serve as a checklist for me to determine who still needs wares charts added. But NPCs who sell only spells (or other non-material services) should be omitted. At some point, I'll also want a list of all other-services NPCs, though I think most of them will be covered by either merchants or spell-merchants. Should also double-check the trainers, I've found a couple that were missed because they weren't in the standard trainer classes. Travel services I'm pretty sure are done, so that just leaves repairs (most of whom are armor/weapon merchants), enchanters (most of whom sell enchanted items), and spellmakers (most of whom are spell-merchants). --TheRealLurlock Talk 10:04, 22 October 2007 (EDT)
OK, all merchants are now listed with nearly complete data in your sandbox. I took the liberty of adding gender and faction, and I flipped the order of race/class (for consistency with other NPC tables). And I even dug up locations for nearly everyone (taking advantage of the info Hoggwild collected at User:Hoggwild5/Sandbox7). Further tweaks are pretty easy if there's anything else you think needs to be done. --NepheleTalk 11:24, 22 October 2007 (EDT)

Yet Another Dumb Question...[edit]

Okay, can you give me "hey, dummy!" instructions on how to acrhive my talk page? I want to sort of clean it up, if possible. Thanks in advance, love! Somercy 11:22, 25 October 2007 (EDT)

There's no automatic "Archive" option if that's what you're asking. You have to do it manually. I just move the threads to new pages, and link them all from my main talk page. Feel free to use mine as a model. --TheRealLurlock Talk 11:25, 25 October 2007 (EDT)
Okay, I think I did a rough job of that. Good 'nuff? Somercy 11:35, 25 October 2007 (EDT)
It's your talk page, so if it's good enough for you, that's all that matters. I keep mine broken down by month, with a separate page for cookies, but that's just my choice. There's no right or wrong way to do it, really. Just whatever works best for you. --TheRealLurlock Talk 11:38, 25 October 2007 (EDT)
Thank you, Lurlock! @-->---- (a rose for you, to show my thanks.) Somercy 11:43, 25 October 2007 (EDT)

Reporting In GOOD News[edit]

Hello Fellow Editor, I am here to tell you that I finally downloaded that program you wanted me to get that is like photoshop, "GIMP." It works like a charm and now I can edit those horribly dark pics! Just informing you. Thanks A LOT!!! --Playjex 17:58, 29 October 2007 (EDT)

Proposed Deletions[edit]

Before adding {{prod}} tags to pages, could you please try to take first care of whatever cleanup needs to be done to prepare the page for deletion? Deletion tags should not say "move this page then delete it". Rather, the tag should be able to say "this page has already been moved, this stub is now ready for deletion." If you don't have time to fully fix a page when you notice it, please use some other tag (cleanup, perhaps) to indicate that work needs to be done.

In my opinion, it should be the reponsibility of the person who wants a page deleted to take care of tasks such as moving content off of the page, fixing any redirects to that page, etc. It should not be left up the deleting admin to do all of that work. Occasionally, things will get overlooked, and it's up to the deleting admin to double check so that necessary tasks do not get missed. But forcing the deleting admin to do all of the work is not a good idea (the deleting admin isn't familiar with the details of the page and why it's being deleted; there's no second check at that point to make sure that nothing got accidentally missed, etc.; deletions tend to get done in large batches and surprises aren't too welcome; etc.) --NepheleTalk 19:34, 29 October 2007 (EDT)

Okay, I just noticed with that Tamriel:Brown Book of 3E 426 that the other two related books Tamriel:Red Book of 3E 426 and Tamriel:Yellow Book of 3E 426 were already thus labeled, and I assumed that your bot would be taking care of the details once you knew which ones needed to be moved. Sorry for taking the lazy way out, but there were quite a few of these to do before, and I was just going through them quickly to see which ones needed it first. I was also planning for maybe doing the work myself later, but as usual, I get distracted by all my other projects... --TheRealLurlock Talk 20:59, 29 October 2007 (EDT)
The bot is going through and dealing with all the links for the books, and moving pages where it can. But it can't move the actual page content at this point because the destination page already exists. With many of these pages that have been prod'ed it completely messes up the bot. Either it tries to create new pages with "(book)" suffixes or else it just spits out error messages and refuses to deal with the book at all. The bot tries to figure out where the page content currently exists, and according to the bot's logic some of these books no longer exist (the namespace is only a transclusion and doesn't contain the actual content; the Tamriel book is prod'd and therefore doesn't count as content). And there isn't really anything faulty with that logic: the prod'd page should no longer need to exist, and if the prod'd page were deleted there would no longer be any page content. The result is that I'm left going through pages of logs to find these books, and then manually cleaning up the mess. Bots are really bad at dealing with anything other than the most simple, straightforward tasks. With this Tamriel book reorg I've already put way too much work into making the bot deal with a ton of exceptions and unusual cases (as well as the fact that the bot is simultaneously doing a dozen different tasks), but it is still just a bot. --NepheleTalk 01:14, 30 October 2007 (EDT)
