Renaming Image Files[edit]
Please read all of the information on this page before renaming an image file.
There are three ways to rename an image file. First, we list them here, then we explain how to determine the appropriate option and provide instructions for each procedure.
- Ask an administrator or patroller to rename it by typing a request in plain language.
- Ask an administrator or patroller to rename it by using the rename template.
- Rename it yourself.
Option 1 is the safest, but is a bit less efficient than the others. Choose option 1 if you cannot easily and confidently follow the instructions below for options 2 or 3. Also choose option 1 if you have doubt about what you are doing. If you make a mistake while trying to do option 2 or 3, there's a chance you can cause (relatively minor and temporary) disruption to the wiki.
If you can easily understand and follow the instruction for options 2 or 3, below, you can expedite the process by following them. Option 3 is the most efficient. It is faster and requires less attention from others. Option 2 is less disruptive than option 3 if you make an error, however.
OPTION 1: Make a request on the Administrator Noticeboard by adding a section (header, topic) and give the current file name and explain why you think it should be renamed. If you prefer, you can also ask an administrator or patroller on their talk page.
OPTION 2: (Please read all instructions before performing these steps; if you are not sure you understand them, follow option 1):
- Click the "edit" tab on the image file page
- Add the following to the top of the page: {{rename|SR-xxx-yyyyy.zzz}}; Where SR = Skyrim, etc.; xxx = quest, place, npc, etc.; yyy = the correct (new) file name, and zzz = file type: jpg, png, etc.
- If you are not sure how the new file should be named, simply use {{rename}}
- Save the page.
OPTION 3: —PLEASE READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE PERFORMING THESE STEPS—
- Look at the information near the bottom of the image page you wish to rename. You should see either (a) "The following x pages link to this file:" if x is 20 or more, please use option 2, above; or (b) This file is not embedded on any pages. Please check "What Links Here" for other links to this file.
- In the "TOOLBOX" sidebar, the bottom-most box on the left of the screen, click "What Links Here?" If the result lists more than approximately 20 items, please use option 2, above.
- Make a list of all pages/files that link to the image file.
- Click on the "move" tab near the top-center of the page.
- Read the information and warnings at the top of the page that will then appear; if comfortable, proceed to the next step, below; if not, please use OPTION 2, above.
- In the text input box to the right of "To new title:" and "File", type the name of the new file, (e.g, SR-place-A Place.jpg).
- In the text input box below, provide a reason, such as "Correcting filename."
- Click "Move Page".
- A screen will return reporting "move succeeded." If you receive a different message, please ask an administrator or patroller for help.
- The page will also note that a redirect has been created.
- Click on the link on the page to the original (incorrect) file name.
- A redirect file will appear.
- For image files that have File:User in the name, use the {{prod}} template to submit the redirect file for deletion: Edit the redirect page and insert at the top: {{prod|Delete User image; Moved to (new file name)}}
- For other images, use the {{speedydeletion}} template to submit the redirect file for deletion: Edit the redirect page an insert at the top: {{speedydeletion|Redirect per procedure on Help:Images renaming}}.
