ESO Harrowstorm PTS Release

Harrowstorm (update 25) is out this week on the ESO PTS server. Note that this update changes the MNF and DAT files so the file exports will take longer to do as I have to figure out the new format first.

  • uespLog -- Latest version seems to work fine.
  • EsoExtractData -- To be updated soon...
  • File Uploads -- Done!
  • Champion Points -- Done!
  • Skills -- Done!
  • Skill Coefficients -- Done (Not Checked)!
  • Items -- Done!
  • Icons -- Done!
  • Maps -- Uploaded images and added new maps but new locations not yet added.

-- Daveh (talk) 19:17, 23 January 2020 (GMT)

Finally got the file formats figured out and files uploaded. After a quick look it seems like most everything is there but if there are missing or corrupt files let me know so I can fix the extraction. -- Daveh (talk) 15:32, 7 February 2020 (GMT)

Adding questline synopsis videos to ESO pages

Hey guys it was suggested to me that I post this here. The last couple months I have been making videos that explain the story of different ESO questlines. I started with the Main questline and the moved to the guilds. I would love to add these to the corresponding pages on the UESP to contribute to the community. Daveh said someone on here may be able to help me do that. The spam filter would not let me attach links in this post, but my Youtube Channel is Whitefox1225 and you can find the videos on there. I can also PM you the links. Thanks for any help! — Unsigned comment by Whitefox1225 (talkcontribs) at 02:06 on 25 January 2020 (UTC)

Sorry, but I'm strongly opposed to this. The nature of wiki articles is to be collaborative and easily editable, which is not the case with random videos submitted by users. If you'd like to promote your videos, feel free to do so on your wiki userpage. If you'd like to help contribute to UESP, there are some folk over on the Discord who were previously talking about posting videos to the official UESP YouTube channel, so maybe that's a project you'd like to get involved in. When it comes to quest articles though, the best way you can help is to contribute prose or screenshots. —Legoless (talk) 14:30, 25 January 2020 (GMT)
Through an official UESP-managed channel is the only way I'd support videos being on the UESP, and even then I'm not so sure if I'd want to see those things on actual article pages. Like Lego said, the point of the wiki and the nature of the articles is to be crowdsourced and created by the community and videos are not editable. I've also seen on other game wikis a lot of stupid videos in article spaces that aren't as relevant or useful to the topic at hand as the articles, and I'm afraid of the possibility of opening the floodgate to whatever stupid crap that someone has to actually take the time to watch and screen out being posted on articles since we have a quality level that we're trying to keep around here. I've argued that point a couple of times over the years when videos were brought up, and I'm still holding fast to that belief. Videos serve a very narrow and limited purpose on an open-ended Elder Scrolls game compared to something like GTA where linear missions can mean a video can make sense and be of use, and there are only a handful of instances where a video could be warranted, and I feel like from an official source (be it a developer or from an in-house team that made it) and only in specific uses would actually be of benefit to the UESP. It's a no from me as well. -damon  talkcontribs 19:51, 25 January 2020 (GMT)

Spam filter problem

This thread was split off from the previous one of the same name, and moved to chronological order, since it occurs significantly later and is not directly related.

New to UESP, getting this error on my user page edit: "This action has been automatically identified as harmful, and therefore disallowed. If you believe your action was constructive, please inform an administrator of what you were trying to do. A brief description of the abuse rule which your action matched is: Bulk Spamming Filter". I've been getting constant alerts regarding saving edits (documented on my talk page), so the interim solution was to make my saves in Notepad++ and do a single paste at end of session. Well, I'm at ~370 lines and now have this problem instead. Alternately, is it possible to create a personal project page and link to it from my user page to circumvent the size warning? It's a relevant project to me, but I don't know how relevant tavern / merchant lore would be to the site.ThoraldGM (talk) 08:17, 12 February 2020 (GMT)

The problem is just that you're new and you were making very large edits. Since you're obviously not a spammer, I've marked you as such, so that you won't have that problem in the future. That's only needed temporarily; I or another admin will likely remove it in a few days when it won't matter anymore. I've also reinstated the edit that got blocked. If there's anything else, please let us know! Robin Hood  (talk) 09:57, 12 February 2020 (GMT)
Thanks for helping me preserve my momentum. I'm interested in moving the bulk of that curation from my user page to... (ESO Subject Portals: Maritime, Economy, Taverns, Nords... ?) but I'm new and getting a feel for how UESP prefers to organize / curate its data. Meanwhile, I'd like to tinker with Subject Portal front page creations in my sandboxes, if I can figure out how to create my own. -- ThoraldGM (talk) 20:41, 12 February 2020 (GMT)
Creating your sandbox is easy, heres a link to your (currently) non-existant sandbox: ThoraldGM's Sandbox
For moving your WIP from your userpage to an article, you would need to know what the article will be call, and which namespace it belongs in. Choosing one of you examples, would give "Online:Economy". You can then create this by entering that in the wiki search bar, when it returns "Create the page "Online:Economy" on this wiki! See also the search results found." at the top of the results, this tells you that there is no page with that name, click the red link to begin editing the blank page. Hope this helps! Moving Images with no Redirect

Dillon and I were just talking about this on Discord, but I thought I'd post it here as well, to be sure everyone saw it. It seems that when you move an image without leaving a redirect, the wiki sometimes leaves the original page blank, but with a greyed-out broken image box on it. Purging the page fixes this. Just something to check for. Robin Hood  (talk) 20:43, 15 February 2020 (GMT)

Server Upgrade Time

The current servers were beginning to show their age a bit lately so I've decided to look into a server cluster upgrade sooner rather than later. I received (most) of the servers last Wednesday and am in the long process of getting them setup for the transition. My two main goals for the upgrade are:

  1. No downtime
  2. Minimal read only time

Most services can be upgraded and transitioned one at a time which makes no downtime possible, assuming no issues (crosses fingers). There will probably be an hour or so of the wiki being set to read-only and uploads being disabled to make the wiki upgrade easier.

The major portion of the upgrade probably won't happen for a few weeks yet but check the below section and the Discord wiki channel for announcements. -- Daveh (talk) 17:22, 15 March 2020 (GMT)

For the technical minded you can see my Upgrade Notes I'm making as I do the upgrade. -- Daveh (talk) 17:34, 15 March 2020 (GMT)

Upgrade Announcements

Database Backup -- 15 March 2020 -- I'll be switching all database reads to be on db1 in order to backup the entire database from db2 and get it mirrored on the new db1/db2. There should be no interruption in service but I'll be monitoring db1 performance in case it gets overloaded. -- Daveh (talk) 17:22, 15 March 2020 (GMT)

Backup on db2 has completed and wiki is back to reading from it. -- Daveh (talk) 01:35, 16 March 2020 (GMT)

TeamSpeak3 server moved to new content. -- Daveh (talk) 14:19, 20 March 2020 (GMT)

ElasticSearch server moved to the new content3. Wiki search should not be interrupted. -- Daveh (talk) 17:24, 20 March 2020 (GMT)

Files/Images Upgrade -- 23 March 2020 -- Wiki uploads will be disabled for approximately one hour starting shortly in order to switch over to the new files/images server. -- Daveh (talk) 13:41, 23 March 2020 (GMT)

Files1 upgrade has been completed and wiki uploads are now enabled. -- Daveh (talk) 14:31, 23 March 2020 (GMT)

Database Upgrade -- 24 March 2020 -- The read databases will be switched over first which can be done without interruption. Assuming that goes well, switching over the write databases will require the wiki to go into read only mode for a short period (less than 30 minutes). -- Daveh (talk) 13:22, 24 March 2020 (GMT)

On the new read database server now. -- Daveh (talk) 13:34, 24 March 2020 (GMT)
Wiki will be locked in the next few minutes. -- Daveh (talk) 14:22, 24 March 2020 (GMT)
Write database switched and wiki unlocked. -- Daveh (talk) 14:28, 24 March 2020 (GMT)
Database upgrade is now complete. -- Daveh (talk) 14:52, 24 March 2020 (GMT)

Content Servers -- 25 March 2020 -- I'll be switching sites over to use the new content/cache servers today starting with the wiki. This is just DNS changes so no interruptions are expected. Note that I do expect some caching issues on the wiki since the squid cache was replaced with a varnish cache and it will likely need a little tweaking to get running well. -- Daveh (talk) 14:12, 25 March 2020 (GMT)

All sites should now be running entirely on the new servers. If you encounter any issues feel free to note them in the below section or ping me on Discord. -- Daveh (talk) 18:10, 25 March 2020 (GMT)

Upgrade Issues

Note any major or minor issues that may be related to the upgrade below.

  • Intermittent Wiki Load Issue -- Mod evasive on content2 didn't have the new local server IPs set so it was banning squid1. -- Daveh (talk) 18:10, 25 March 2020 (GMT)
  • Failed to Upload Image File (Error 413) -- Nginx needed to have the client_max_body_size setting increased to 64M and reloaded on squid1. -- Daveh (talk) 18:10, 25 March 2020 (GMT)
  • Anonymous Edits Show as From 127.0.0.1 -- Was an issue with the Varnish configuration which has now been fixed. -- Daveh (talk) 19:30, 25 March 2020 (GMT)
  • Mobile Skin Not Working -- Reports of the mobile site not automatically using the mobile skin as it should. On quick check I had to click the Mobile View link at the bottom of the page as a logged in user. Testing with anonymous users not replicate the issue (auto-skin mobile detection seemed to work correctly). -- Daveh (talk) 14:00, 6 April 2020 (GMT)
  • Change a change in the wiki config so that any visit to a X.m.uesp.net site is now forced to use the mobile skin. This fixes mobile view auto-detect for logged in users as well as the View Mobile Version link on the toolbar and the Mobile View link at the bottom of the page. We'll see if that fixes things or causes new problems. -- Daveh (talk) 14:11, 6 April 2020 (GMT)
  • Still some reports of issues so I redid how the site redirects to the X.uesp.net or X.m.uesp.net sub-domains. There were some cases where the two could become mixed up and serve the wrong content. -- Daveh (talk) 14:06, 9 April 2020 (GMT)
  • Old file.shtml Not Working -- The old file download SHTML file results in an error. Had to enable SSI on the main domain and update the file with a few fixes to prevent errors. -- Daveh (talk) 14:06, 9 April 2020 (GMT)

Username Change Request

Hello!

At the discretion of the moderators, I was hoping to request a second username change, which I anticipate to be final. I understand the ease it is on my end to make another account and just abandon the old, though I have a tendency to like to be as clutter-less as possible with accounts where I can be, and few as my contributions are I would like to keep them to my name. Furthermore I know there is an element of "make up your mind" to be had hence myself putting off the name change for awhile to make sure this is the one I would like.

If a moderator/administrator would permit one more username change, I would like to change from "M'akiir" to "Cassian". I've searched for User:Cassian and it seems to be unregistered as of now so I think it is available. Thank you for your time! — Unsigned comment by M'akiir (talkcontribs) at 02:05 on 18 March 2020 (UTC)

Silencer's comments/opinions

A number of comments that Silencer has on his userpage are unacceptable. Specifically, the comments are the last three sentences in the last paragraph of "My Opinions". They have been up since 8 August 2016.

It is unacceptable for someone to make accusations about personal behaviour that lack evidence. This is classed as a form of personal attack. The comments, which were clearly intended to be seen, go beyond reasonable or permissive.

The comments contain a series of accusations against users of the site. They include, but are not limited to: "certain individuals conspired to get me banned for a lengthy period", "I feel that these individuals will not stop until I am permanently blocked", "What I have done to earn such hatred is beyond me," and "I make this post in the belief that those certain individuals are currently maneuvering to get me blocked ..." No diffs or any other form of evidence is provided.

Although no usernames are mentioned, it does not excuse personal attacks. The comments clearly relate to UESP-related incidents. One would have to read through a myriad of discussions scattered across the site to know the full story behind all of it. I do not wish to go into detail about the incidents, but they caused enough tension around here.

The Etiquette and No personal attacks policies still apply to userspace. Also, while there is no policy which bans an user from putting their thoughts and opinions about wiki-related incidents on their userpage, the site is not a soapbox or battleground. Silencer's comments are confrontational, and are likely to cause misery to others. However, I do believe that policies are best treated with comment sense, and that policies have potential to be relaxed.

I do not know if anybody apart from me has complained about the comments, but even if that is not the case, another point of this topic should be to establish whether it is acceptable for a user to put up ridiculous narratives of wiki-related incidents on their userpage. If accusations can be fact checked, that's one thing, but where does it stop?

I do take into account that Silencer has not been active since early December, and that his comments might not really bother people, but when someone throws accusations like those ones posted out there - on the site and for all to see - it is a bit of an issue. Even if nobody complains, it should not automatically be taken to mean acceptance.

While I could go on for pages about the matter (within this post), I will not say anything further at this current moment in time. •D. G.|Talk|Work• 15:55, 29 April 2020 (GMT)

While you're entirely correct from a policy perspective, I believe this is one of those times where the administrators chose to ignore the rules in favour of fostering some degree of peace. Silencer made those comments shortly after a one-year block, and so was understandably a bit miffed; to have insisted that he remove them would have only provoked things. As you note, Silencer has been inactive lately, and I think removing the comments now would likely just create drama where there doesn't need to be. Robin Hood  (talk) 22:12, 29 April 2020 (GMT)
And, what's the point of bringing this up? I'm kinda with Rob, for whatever my semi-retired only edit a couple of times a year thing is worth. He was probably blowing off some steam by airing his thoughts, but in the interest of letting things die down, presumably because there were no direct names involved, he was just ignored. At this point, everyone is well and done with that, because it happened **years** ago. Back then, and even now years later, there's nothing to gain from editing his userpage to remove it, so why do it and risk upsetting him over it for absolutely nothing? -Damon talkedits 01:21, 30 April 2020 (GMT)
I can totally understand where you are coming from. It is important to examine a situation from both sides, so I hope this explanation helps clear things up.
Comments like the ones I have taken issue with can cause ill-feeling, but in this case, they bring the wiki and its users into disrepute. I would not be entirely surprised if people have complained privately, but I believe an effort to take the comments down would cause short-term drama and trigger a protracted, drawn-out battle. In other words, more trouble than it is worth. Personally I cannot see the comments coming down any time soon. Not to mention that when they are posted on a userpage, it is a bit of a grey area. It is one thing to say that content crosses the line. To remove such content is another.
Silencer was probably a bit annoyed around the time he made the comments, and understandably so; I would be if I was in his shoes. Nothing is above criticism, but there is a time and place for some types of criticism. His comments have been online for years, available for others to read and draw their own conclusions from. There was no need for it. I don't think anybody really gets why he made the comments. I have not seen that kind of behaviour on any other userpage on the site. Still, I do not want to get into all the ifs, buts, and maybes.
The reason I didn't make a post about the matter at the time was because I was blocked. I was tempted to bring the matter up later when I had a proper opportunity. It did go through my mind that there might be an administrative agreement to leave things be, but even if that was/is the case, it is important for admins to consider the views of editors in every situation. I appreciate that it might seem a bit strange to be bringing this up, and that it might not be in the interests of the site to remove things. But it shouldn't be "one rule for them, another rule for us". Not that I'm encouraging anybody to test the waters on their userpage, but you get the idea.
P.S. In my spare time (and I only say this because it bears some relevance), I have been writing a memoir about some wiki-related incidents involving myself - etiquette issues in general. It is only a small paragraph, so not a lot. Although I am no longer an active editor, I have no intention to name anybody or push any boundaries. •D. G.|Talk|Work• 02:09, 30 April 2020 (GMT)

Thank you kindly! :) Werewolfvampire (talk) 02:13, 9 May 2020 (GMT)

I'm afraid we have to decline that request due to the fact that it resembles two different administrator names. This could lead people to believe that you're using an account that belongs to either myself or Legoless. If you'd like to pick a different user name that doesn't resemble other users' names, we'll be happy to change your user name. Robin Hood  (talk) 03:16, 9 May 2020 (GMT)

Math Formulae Extension

Even since before I was an editor, I thought that the raw-text visualizations of mathematical formulae were unsightly. "11+(1.433*lvl)" just looks wrong and not every user is going to know that * is multiplication. Using this extension, I was able to generate User-Dcsg-Math.png, which is so much more readable. Especially for use alongside the upcoming graphs, I think this extension or something like this would be a great aesthetic improvement to the uesp. --Dcsg (talk) 00:10, 7 June 2020 (UTC)

Having never used the extension on WP, how easy is it to use, how complex is the input required to get that output? Is there an advantage over just better formatting of the text inputs in those summary fields? Or are you thinking this has applications elsewhere? Kiz (email - talk) 00:26, 7 June 2020 (UTC)
Documentation is very extensive on WP. The input is a variant of LaTeX for which you might get a bit of feeling, but it's not complicated. You would basically type <math>f(x) = x^2</math> will give you this which is very straightforward. Some more complicated symbols, like the square root of two would use: \sqrt{2} and results in this formula. All special symbols can be found here. --Ilaro (talk) 00:40, 7 June 2020 (UTC)
Okay, so for the example given of 11+(1.433*lvl), WP's current implementation requires an input of <math>11+(1.433 \times lvl)</math> to give the output of User-Dcsg-Math.png. For our simplistic levelling formula that we use it should be possible to get the NPC Summary to deal with the conversion to <math></math> tags? Although, dealing with changing * over to \times might be doable by bot than by hand? Kiz (email - talk) 20:04, 7 June 2020 (UTC)
That can also be achieved through any templates that use <math/> by doing {{#replace:{{{1}}}|*| \times }} --Dcsg (talk) 20:36, 8 June 2020 (UTC)

Orcz Wiki and Blades Content

I found this Orcz wiki that uses old UESP content as their own. Our own pages are already updated quite a bit, but looking at the history will reveal this clearly. Legoless put a disclaimer on the site earlier today. Tables from the equipment page are straight copies from our item page and the colored weakness/resistance table on this page is using the exact same markup as our old table here and even initially copied my mistaken Dremora resistances (see their history). I only had a quick glance over their other pages, but it seems this a common trend between all of them. They do have some original content here and there, but the similarities are striking.
Any further action we should take? --Ilaro (talk) 12:35, 15 June 2020 (UTC)

We could contact the webmaster to alert them to the issue if desired. It seems to me that as long as there's a link back to UESP per our by-sa licence it isn't a major problem, although I guess we need to wait and see if that notice remains in place. —Legoless (talk) 12:46, 15 June 2020 (UTC)
By way of update, an Orcz admin has deleted the by-sa licence and hidden the edit history. Seems like an instance of deliberate plagiarism so we should probably attempt to contact the site owner. —Legoless (talk) 16:11, 15 June 2020 (UTC)

Ad Changes

Just a heads up that we will be changing our ad network this week. We've been happily using Curse ads for a few years but with the recent COVID pandemic they've lost most of their ad team so have decided to partner with another firm, Longitude Ads, to take over their advertising. There shouldn't be too much noticeable difference other than a few display issues this week as we sort out the implementation. As usual, if anyone sees any inappropriate ads let me know! -- Daveh (talk) 14:37, 22 June 2020 (UTC)

The ad networks have now been switched to Longitude. -- Daveh (talk) 15:16, 22 June 2020 (UTC)

I don't see anything that would've blocked that address at a glance. Were you using Tor, by any chance? In any event, I told the wiki to create the account and send you a randomized password at the e-mail you provided. If you have any further problems, please post the specific error message you're getting and I'll see what I can do. Thanks! Robin Hood(talk) 10:02, 19 September 2020 (UTC)

Map edit rights

I'd like to be able to edit our ESO map, but the Edit function stopped appearing for me years ago. I saw a talk page topic that said that we're limiting map editing functions to trusted users like patrollers, which I think I still am (although with very little activity as of late). Should I be able to edit the map with my current permissions? --Xyzzy Talk 05:50, 30 September 2020 (UTC)

Lost Username Request

I was attempting to login, and it's possible I guess that over the over a decade I used the site that I never logged in, but doubtful. I cannot for the life of me remember my username, but can provide the email it would be attached to. I didn't see a username option on the login help. What should my next step be to recover an account? — Unsigned comment by 71.207.197.3 (talk) at 15:15 on 31 October 2020

If you still have the same email address, I think you can use Special:PasswordReset with just the email address. --Enodoc (talk) 15:19, 31 October 2020 (UTC)
Thanks, that does appear to have worked. I didn't think of trying to fill out only the email blank. — Unsigned comment by 71.207.197.3 (talk) at 23:35 on 31 October 2020

To celebrate an amazing 25 years of the UESP.net we're giving away a 2021 calendar and a custom coin to select staff and users.

Custom Coin and 2021 Calendar Gifts to Celebrate the 25th Anniversary of UESP

The current list of qualifying positions include:

  • Wiki Admin
  • Any wiki editor with more than 2000 lifetime edits (check here)
  • ESO Guild Officer
  • Forum/Blog Moderator
  • Discord Moderator
  • Podcast/Streaming/Youtube Contributor

To claim your gifts just fill in the mailing form with your mailing address and your relevant account names/position so we can verify. You have 2 weeks (18 November) to claim your gift before we open up the remaining gifts to other users.

If you didn't make the list don't worry! We'll be opening the qualifications to more users later on so keep tuned to this topic for future updates. If the demand is high enough we may even do another production run. If you'd like to nominate someone either in or outside of the UESP just let me know. If you're not considered "UESP staff" you can still get these gifts through Patreon or through contests on our various social media accounts.

Here's to the next 25 years of Elder Scrolls and UESP.net! -- Daveh (talk) 18:19, 4 November 2020 (UTC)

  • Any active wiki patroller.
  • Any editor who has made 50 or more edits in the past year.
You have 2 weeks (7 Dec 2020) to claim your gift on the mailing form (after that time it may be given away to someone else). -- Daveh (talk) 15:45, 23 November 2020 (UTC)

Podcast Shownotes

I'm currently running into issues when trying to create show notes for the podcast as a number of things keep getting blocked by the spam filters. I think the one that's got me this time is an instagram link to an artist we were talking about. Obviously, having the spam filter is helpful but I am wondering if there's something I could do for the podcast pages so it doesn't get flagged every time. Either a flag on my account since I'm the one making the initial notes, or something we can add to the template? -- Pylawn (talk) 15:19, 1 December 2020 (GMT)

I've tentatively given you autopatrolled rights, which will bypass the issue for you, but userpatroller is another option, if people feel autopatrolled isn't appropriate. One way or the other, unless we change the filter, it wants some kind of staff role to skip over the abuse filters. Robin Hood(talk) 17:01, 1 December 2020 (UTC)
