Main Page Remix
I believe the contents of this page should be moved to a "UESPWiki:Current Events" page, and it should be replaced with an "Article of the Day" thing, and other things found on wikis. I believe that OblivioWiki does something like this and so does Wikipedia. --Aristeo 13:03, 4 June 2006 (EDT)
- I'm hestitant to change the format of the main page since its basically what I've been using for the past 10 years (few sites can claim that, whether that's good or bad). I'm not against creating a "Current Events" page and only listing the most important news items on the main page. I'm also not against adding a "Page of the Day" section on the main page (perhaps a side box on the right side?). Feel free to make some test pages to show me sample layouts...if I like them well enough you might change my mind. -- DaveH 13:10, 7 June 2006 (EDT)

This is what I have so far... --Aristeo 02:26, 8 June 2006 (EDT)
I just redid the Template:Home section of the main page (the section that isn't protected), but kept the news section below that the same per Daveh's wishes. Tell me what you all think! :D --Aristeo 17:04, 15 July 2006 (EDT)
I just redid it, adding the "Did you know", "Featured Article", and "Helping Out" sections. All these will be updated regularly by me and anyone else who wants to help. News will be written by the community (UESPWiki:News), and featured articles are still selected by the community. I haven't set up a way for members to suggest "Did you know" facts, but I'll be monitoring the New Pages list by myself for now. I also adhered to Daveh's wishes by keeping the news on the left side. Let me know how you all like it. --Aristeo 02:15, 29 September 2006 (EDT)
- Wonderful! I am quite pleased with the new layout, although the color-scheme could use a little remix of it's own. I was actually rather surprised when the page first popped up, believing for a moment I had accessed some other site. Nice work, Aristeo. -- Booyah boy 02:36, 29 September 2006 (EDT)
-
- Thanks Booyah Boy! I agree that the color scheme may need some work, as it does look a bit too "yellow". (I was going for a light book-like color.) Any recommendations? --Aristeo 02:50, 29 September 2006 (EDT)
- Nothing at the moment, although you read my thoughts exactly (a little too yellow, indeed). I'll see if I can't come up with something later, but - for now - it's still some fine work. -- Booyah boy 03:28, 29 September 2006 (EDT)

- I also like the new arrangement very much. Well Done! However, I miss the image with the sword, it was the first thing people looked at before and so it's an emblem of the site. --DrPhoton 03:36, 29 September 2006 (EDT)
-
- Yes, I would prefer the sword to stay. Not so much as to marvel at my artistic abilities (or lack thereof), but it has been greeting users for 11 years now, what other website can say the same?. Everything else looks pretty good, some minor points I might bring up eventually. -- DaveH 09:01, 29 September 2006 (EDT)

- I don't know how to edit the "Do You Know" section, so maybe someone else could do this. (SPOILER ALERT) Sometime during or prior to 3E.433 (the starting point of Oblivion), necromancy was outlawed in Cyrodill by the newly elected Archmage Hannibal Traven. So, technically it's illegal in two countries . . . at least until Traven dies later that year. (Feel free to delete this message after it's read.) - Tom -
-
- Actually, necromancy was outlawed in the Mages Guild by Hannibal Traven, but it was not outlawed for the population in general. Or at least, that's my understanding of the situation. So as long as you choose not to join the mages guild in Cyrodiil you're completely free to practice necromancy. --Nephele 02:36, 4 December 2006 (EST)
Search Box Location
Is there any way to move the "Search" box to the top of the left hand side of the pages; it would make the site a little more user friendly instead if requiring a user to scroll down the page every time they need to use the Search function. Just a suggestion. --Hoggwild5 08:51, 21 October 2006 (EDT)
- Heh, I was wondering the same thing... Is it possible to move it with a custom skin? Sstasino 14:05, 22 November 2006 (EST)
- Daveh moved it. I don't think I like the change; is there anywhere we could move it so that it's not in the way? Aristeo | Talk 09:29, 23 November 2006 (EST)
-
- I wasn't exactly sure where to place it, but it is definitely better than where it was and easier to search for things as you don't have to scroll down initially. At any rate, now that I know how to change it, it is a 30 second fix if we wish to change it again (requires modifying Monobook.php). -- DaveH 16:44, 24 November 2006 (EST)
Chainki
Hi, I'm your local friendly Chainki wiki guy, who sees on the Chainki - The world's biggest collection of links that anyone can edit "Recent changes" list that someone from your no doubt fine site has been adding links on all the relevant Chainki pages to your Elder Scrolls pages. Fine with that. What I'm here to ask is that in the most appropriate place within your site a link be found for a link of the following sort:
I'd put it myself, but one of you will certainly know better than I where the best place for such a link would be.
Thanks! --81.240.14.32 12:25, 10 November 2006 (EST)
- UESP no longer actively maintains a link page, nor does it engage in link exchange. While we do have an older links page, it is essentially a vestigial page from the old (pre-wiki) site (indeed many of the links on it are no longer working, and the page is marked for cleanup). I.e., in short there's no appropriate place for an exchange link. --Wrye 19:11, 21 November 2006 (EST)
Official Plugin Pages - Hard to Find
I'm having some trouble finding the Plug-In Pages from the Main Page or the Oblivion page. Maybe some linking is in order.

Did you know
There's no Mithril weapons, does this just mean weapons that appear at the same level as Mithril armor in Oblivion (like Silver)? Also, the lore is that Skooma can be smoked with a pipe, yes, but can the player actually use the (Good) Skooma Pipe in Morrowind?Anoriega 16:41, 13 January 2007 (EST)
- First question: Sure, there's no Mithril weapons, but that's nothing special. There's also no Orcish weapons, or Fur, Leather or Chainmail, and no Silver armor. There's 4 more classes of armor than of weapons, not surprising since the armor must be divided into Light and Heavy categories, while weapons are not. Nobody says armor and weapon materials have to line up one-for-one, so this is hardly surprising. (See Armor and Weapons to see the actual level break-downs for when each type appears.)
- As for the second question, yes there are Skooma Pipes in Morrowind, and no you can't actually smoke Skooma in them. However, they can be used as very low-quality Alembics in alchemy. And you can drink Skooma straight if you really want to. (It is also not actually addictive, contrary to lore.) --TheRealLurlock Talk 19:47, 13 January 2007 (EST)
- I wasn't criticizing the game, and I'm well aware weapons and armor don't line up 1:1 (I've put hundreds of hours into each game). I was referring to the "Did you know" section, where it says ancient vampires can only be damaged with weapons of Mithril quality or higher.
- And as for the skooma, I was referring to how the "Did you know" section said skooma can be smoked with a pipe, or taken straight. I realize that's correct lore, I was just wondering if that section puts things from the actual players' perspective (where you can't use the pipe), or from lore perspective?
- Sorry if it seems like I'm nitpicking, I'm used to Wikipedia, Guildwiki, and Obliviowiki, perhaps they have higher standards (due to higher traffic)? Anoriega 09:40, 14 January 2007 (EST)
- Well, you're actually not correct. Both of the articles that you refer to come from our 'Tamriel' name space, which deals with Elder Scrolls Lore, and general links between the games. Just because the information they present isn't accurate in all games doesn't mean it isn't accurate. In fact Ancient Vampires only appear in The Elder Scrolls: Arena, where Mithril Weapons DO appear. As far as Skooma, the lore is that there are several ways to ingest the stuff as well. --Ratwar 22:46, 14 January 2007 (EST)
- Though I'll admit that I had misgivings about the Mithril Weapons and Ancient Vampires entry there from the beginning, specifically because it DOESN'T say which game it's talking about. Compare the "that there are 188 essential NPCs at one point or another in Oblivion?" comment, which makes it clear which game it's referencing. I'd favor the removal or at least clarification of that comment, especially since it references a game which very few visitors (relatively speaking) to this site have ever played. --TheRealLurlock Talk 22:31, 16 January 2007 (EST)
- Ah, I understand now. I agree that the entry should clarify it's referring to Arena, otherwise players might be confused about why they can't find Ancient Vampires or Mithril weapons in Oblivion or Morrowind (or might start searching for them). Anoriega 17:28, 19 January 2007 (EST)

Shivering isles released!
The Shivering isles has been released! I think it deserves a place in the "news" area! --Viccce 06:21, 27 March 2007 (EDT)
-- the "sections" box on the left lists Shivvering Isles, making it easy to get to -- unless I go to my user page, then that section header disappears. I don't know how to (or if I can) modify the templates, so this probably requires admin fixing. -- silver 2007-03-29, 9:37am PDT

- This might just be due to a caching issue, either server or client side. You can try forcing the page to reload ignoring the cache (different on all browsers, Shift-Reload in Firefox I think). You can also add ?action=purge to the page URL to force the Wiki to rebuild that page. I can also force a refresh of all server pages but prefer to do this during off-hours as it really stresses the server for 5 minutes or so. -- Daveh 15:13, 29 March 2007 (EDT)
Pictures.
Just a random thought concerning most of the wiki - I think we should gather pictures of items/actors/environments in Oblivion so we can have pictures for each article on an item. The lack of pictures seems odd to me after spending time at places like GuildWiki - I know it'd be harder as cyrodill sure is a big place - but most images could be reused for those items that look the same and what have you. The collective effort would surely be worth it in the end.

- I fully agree, and anyone who wants to contribute is already welcome to upload screenshots. There is a help page on how to create and upload screenshots; adding images is listed on our Helping Out page; there is a category of Pages Needing Images. I don't know that there's much more that can be done to facilitate adding new images to the wiki... but it still takes editors who are willing to spend the time taking screenshots and uploading them. If you would like to help, we'd welcome the assistance. --NepheleTalk 15:26, 13 April 2007 (EDT)

- Of course, you should register a username - I'm not even sure uploading files is possible for anonymous users. (This might be something that should be noted on Help:Images.) But yeah, any contributions will be appreciated in that respect. One thing we've been looking for is screenshots of all the various harvestable plants in the game, might be a good place to start, just as a suggestion. Anything else you can think of would be good as well. --TheRealLurlock Talk 15:49, 13 April 2007 (EDT)

- True. Without an account, the "Upload File" link shows up on the sidebar, but when you click on it you are told "Not Logged In: You must be logged in to upload files". Protection?
This page has been a very frequent target of spam lately. In the past 2 months, nearly every edit has been either spam or someone reverting spam. I'm hesitant to protect it, since it is the Talk page for the Main page, but it's getting ridiculous. Would anyone be in favor of a semi-protect on this page? Obviously not full protection, but even a semi-protect would prevent the majority of the spam from occuring. Only anonymous or new accounts would be affected. Plus, the purpose of this page is to discusses changes to the Main page, not for newbies to ask general questions, so even if a few new editors are blocked from posting here, it's most likely this is the wrong page for them to ask the question anyhow. I understand that it could confuse some people, being such a prominent page, so I won't do anything without some community approval, but it's clear something needs to be done. --TheRealLurlock Talk 21:16, 21 June 2007 (EDT)
- Semi-protection sounds reasonable to me. --Wrye 22:51, 21 June 2007 (EDT)
-
- I'm worried that adding semi-protection to this page will basically have no overall effect on the spambots, while being an obstacle for new editors. In the last round of spamming, links to the same spam site were added to this page and also to Oblivion Talk:Main Quest, User talk:70.127.159.246. Although different IPs were used, the fact that the IPs were all spamming the same site makes it pretty clear to me that the same spambot was responsible. It also is obvious from the edits made by 203.113.15.234 that the same spambot is in fact the plus-sign vandal. So this spammer is browsing through the entire site adding links to many different pages. Adding semi-protection to just this one page wouldn't do anything to actually stop this spambot.
- On the other hand, anonymous IPs have made made multiple legitimate edits to this page [1] [2] [3], generally with well-intentioned suggestions about how to improve the wiki. Yes, perhaps other pages would have been more appropriate places for the suggestions (Community Portal for one), but trying to figure that out can be daunting for a first-time contributor. Adding extra obstacles seems very likely to just deter some people from helping out at all.
- Also, I'm willing to bet that this same spambot is just indiscriminately going after every wiki on the internet. For example, the spambot that hit CS Wiki a couple weeks ago had also hit UESPWiki (and that example also shows that the bot is very willing to set up fake accounts in order to spam; the fact that we allow anonymous edits is not facilitating the spam). The person behind the bot could care less if one site is more difficult to access than another, or if the spam on one site gets cleaned up more quickly than others and therefore does nothing to boost their google rankings. So I think measures that basically just try to discourage the spammers by making edits here marginally more difficult really won't have any overall effect.
- I really do want to find some ways to limit the spam. But I'm wary of introducing quick-fix solutions that don't really reduce the spam but yet have unwanted side effects. --NepheleTalk 13:34, 22 June 2007 (EDT)
-
-
- Lurlock's argument is that this page is particularly prone to being spammed (which recent history supports). Also that semi-protection status is not too obstructive -- also true. It's simple enough to try, and completely revertible. So, I still think it's worth doing. --Wrye 16:04, 22 June 2007 (EDT)
-
-
-
-
- In addition to Semi=Protection, I feel that a notice box needs to be placed on both the top and bottom of the page directing people to the Community Portal. This would let anon. users know how to express their opinions and limit the constant spamming on this page. --Ratwar 16:15, 22 June 2007 (EDT)

I agree with Jeff, I think there should be xbox live for oblivion (or the next). I was thinking like actual gameplay live, but arena would be cool. Support for International Translations
What is possible ? Something like the Wikipedia with each page having an according language link section if that page was created - or is this out of scope ?
A lesser help would be a language support giving each page a section called "International Translations" and maybe together with a short english explanation (under a section "origin of name"?) - how the original name/expression was found in the elder scrolls lore and what it means - to make translations easier. Only each page title would have a list of international translations. Example for page: Bloodmoon:Wolfsbane Petals
- Origin of Name
The name "Wolfsbane Petals" is derived from the petals of a flower coming from Aconitum and was used in history to poison wolfs (hence wolfsbane). Full name: "Aconitum lycoctonum"
- International Translation
- german - Wolfs-Eisenhut
- french - Aconit tue-loup
- ...
I would also ask if an international book section would be possible ? --Scanner 07:50, 21 November 2007 (EST)
The Elder Scrolls Lore
Hi, I recently ordered the game Oblivion from GAME.com! :) I am looking forward to jumping into the game however I am a HUGE Lore junkie! :P Is there possibly a page on the wiki or somewhere else on the net where I can find out the main History of the elder scrolls games? Games always make more sense and are generally more enjoyable if you have played the previous ones, however I don't have the time nor really want to play the previous ones. So, a little help? ;)
- Hi there and welcome to the Elder Scrolls! Our Tamriel pages contain history and other information about the game, but it's generally agreed that the best site for lore is The Imperial Library (much to our chagrin!). Minor Complaint
I don't know if this is the right place for this but it's just a little thing that bugs me. Whoever writes most of the strategy suggestions is apparently playing with the difficulty slider pushed way south or refusing to level up. I see a number of articles where relatively strong opponents are said to be able to be killed with one or two stealth blows. I play with the slider a little above normal but I doubt it's that uge a difference. 68.166.64.77 16:58, 6 February 2008 (EST)
- You're right, and it's not something we encourage. If you've got examples, please post them here or on my talk page so we can clean them up. –Rpeh•T•C•E• 17:23, 6 February 2008 (EST)
Grammar Mistake
I just noticed that the italic notice on the main page begins, "Because the site's purpose is to provide information..." Well, technically, you're never supposed to begin a sentence with "Because." So, should this be fixed, or is it too minor to worry about? --GuildKnightTalk2me 20:41, 11 February 2008 (EST)
- I tweaked it. Better now? Or else I could paste in any specific sentence if you provide a suggestion. --NepheleTalk 15:23, 13 February 2008 (EST)
- Yeah, that works! --GuildKnightTalk2me 20:42, 13 February 2008 (EST)
Archiving
This page now has conversations that are over a year and a half old. Does the archiving need to be done by an admin? --GuildKnightTalk2me 20:41, 11 February 2008 (EST)
- Anyone can archive talk pages. Although I'm not exactly sure it's needed in this case, given our current Archiving Guideline. The main reason to archive is to prevent pages from getting so large that they are awkward to view or edit, but this page hasn't passed the 32 kB threshold. --NepheleTalk 15:36, 13 February 2008 (EST)
- Well, nevermind, then! ;) --GuildKnightTalk2me 20:42, 13 February 2008 (EST)
Leaving Morrowind Factions
Spoilers
Guys, how would you feel about removing Dark Brotherhood-related spoilers? For example, look at the page on Oblivion:J'Ghasta. The way he dies is mentioned in the first paragraph, unfortunately I read this before having finished the DB quest line so the twist in the plot didn't come as quite such a surprise to me....
Would be happy to reword this/move it to the end of the text for all the characters involved, but since I'm new here I thought I'd better ask first. Thanks! — Unsigned comment by Thlayli (talk • contribs)
- This sort of thing has been suggested before and it's a non-starter. The trouble is that one person's spoiler is another's essential information and if things are removed or hidden they just get added in again. In truth, the whole site is a spoiler. When Shivering Isles came out there were a lot of editors who refused to have anything to do with that section of the site until they had completed it. I'm afraid you're just going to have to exercise the same control! –Rpeh•T•C•E• 09:49, 19 March 2008 (EDT)

- OK, fair point. It would be possible however to add the details of his untimely death to the Notes, maybe even as the first item. That wouldn't hide or remove anything, but it might make this spoiler a bit less visible at first glance. What do people think? --Thlayli 16:07, 19 March 2008 (EDT)
Broken page?
The following page comes up blank for some reason: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Item_Materials_and_Styles
- Thanks. It's a known issue. Try it again now - it should be working again. –Rpeh•T•C•E• 04:34, 24 March 2008 (EDT)
Book lovers
Hai, I was just wondering if there was a feature for those who like collecting books... Well, not a feature but more of if it's allowed to make note that certain book(s) may be somewhere, that are hard to find, or not even found anywhere else. I've always loved collecting rare or uncommon books to read, so basically, the point of this question: Am I allowed to put in a note there's a certain book in the area? This is user "Allanon", but I had to get a new password, and I accidentaly had the wiki blocked on my hotmail, so I can't send another password. If someone(Admins or otherwise) could send it for me, I'd be grateful. — Unsigned comment by 72.129.202.94 (talk)
- Oblivion:Books provides at least one location where each book can be found. That information should also be have been added to each individual book page (e.g., Oblivion:The Locked Room). Every dungeon already contains a list of any uncommon books located in that location (e.g., Oblivion:Smuggler's Cave). In other words, basically we've already been trying to provide information about where to find any rare books. For common books, we're not trying to list every location (and those books are not listed in dungeon contents) just because it's not worth the effort. Nobody is going to travel to Smuggler's Cave just to obtain yet another copy of Guide to Anvil.
- As for your password, sorry, no, we can't send it to you. We do not have access to anyone's password information, or even to other people's account information. You need to use the standard wiki functions to regain access to your account. For example, unblock the wiki in your hotmail and send another email? --NepheleTalk 00:39, 30 March 2008 (EDT)
I would do so, but the whole limit thing kicked in. It's okay, It's just a minor thing. And thanks for answering my question, and yeah, I wasn't planning on adding common books. Just wanted to know, thanks. — Unsigned comment by 72.129.202.94 (talk)
