Bugs[edit]

I started the quest "Joining the Stormcloaks" without pursuing it further. But I had no real problem talking to Ulfric (like mentioned in the article), I just had to initiate dialogue with him a second time and could proceed with the main quest. --Alfwyn 11:39, 17 November 2011 (UTC)

I have moved the bugs in the bug section to the Season Unending page, as they are bugs associated with that quest and not this one. Aresvallis 04:31, 18 November 2011 (UTC)
I came across a bug today on the PC, I had a small bounty in whiterun and have been putting off paying it. The guards are always saying "wait I know you". When I go to the guard to release the dragon from the trap he always says "Wait I know you!" and no dialog options comes up. I solved it by going outside the palace and attacking a guard until I got a bigger bounty, put away my weapon and did my time in jail. 86.173.157.202 17:21, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
I had the same problem but I am with the Thieves Guild and so I just bought him off. Funny as hell, actually, to bribe one of the guards literally under the nose of the Jarl. Another possibility is to use your privilege as a Thane of Whiterun to get yourself off. --174.6.51.17 08:15, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

glitch.[edit]

I stand on the balcony and try to call the dragon but it never comes. John142 18:39, 25 November 2011 (UTC)

Added help on that to the Notes. trep35 06:13, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
The problem may be that you're not holding the shout button down for long enough to complete the Call Dragon shout. That was my problem, and the problem for at least one person on this forum. I'm not sure if this tip belongs in the article or not. Meegs 07:33, 8 December 2011 (UTC)
I'm having the same issue, I do the long call and he doesn't show. Tried the shorter ones, too. Also tried doing it on the upper right and left balcony, and the lower middle. Nothing seems to work. I forgot to add that I finished the civil war quest, and sided with the Imperials. Also, I tried setstage mq301 150, and I get the message that I have called the dragon and have to defeat and trap it - but he still doesn't show up. Setstage mq301 220 gives me that I have trapped and qestioned the dragon, but have to release it - but I have no dragon to release. I'll try do another setstage later to see if I can release the dragon I never caught, but I would rather accually hear what he has to say and not to mention trap the bastard myself. — Unsigned comment by 81.232.141.15 (talk) at 17:42 on 15 December 2011
Okay, so using setstage I've been able to call, trap and release him - but I still haven't been able to talk to the dragon that's not there. The quest arrow is pointing me towards the entrence to Whiterun - but still no dragon. — Unsigned comment by 81.232.141.15 (talk) at 10:38 on 16 December 2011
Still nothing... any help? PLEASE! — Unsigned comment by 81.232.141.15 (talk) at 12:42 on 21 December 2011
Here's a way to complete the quest using console. After learning the shout and given the objective to go to the Great Porch, Dragonsreach. Talk to Jarl Balgruuf and he will say that his man is ready. Shout all three words just to make sure it really doesn't works. If Odahviing still doesn't come, follow the steps below.
  • Stand at the outermost area of the Great Porch and spawn Odahviing by typing player.placeatme 00045920
  • Without exiting the console, type setstage mq301 125 and setstage mq301 150
  • Exit the console, and Odahviing shall move towards the trap. Once the yoke falls down and traps Odaviing completely, enter the console once more and type setstage mq301 180
  • If the objective "Interrogate Odahviing" is not assigned. Type setstage mq301 200
  • Talk to Odaviing and the objective "Set Odahviing free" will be given. To do so, talk to the guard upstairs or pull the chain yourself.
  • The yoke may or may not release, just talk to Odahviing again and it will offer you a flight to Skuldafn.Niwcsc (talk) 04:14, 9 March 2013 (GMT)
spawning the dragon in the described way did not trigger the trap. instead of player.placeatme 00045920 use: prid 00045921 then, moveto player and finally enable. thank you for the solution! — Unsigned comment by 2.245.134.27 (talk) at 08:19 on 6 August 2014
The poster above has the preferred way to do it. The placeatme method would spawn a whole new Odahviing, which will often cause quests to work incorrectly. The prid and moveto brings the original Odahviing to you instead, which shouldn't bother most quests. Robin Hood  (talk) 16:29, 6 August 2014 (GMT)

Prerequisite quest is different[edit]

Here on the The Fallen page the prerequisite quest is Season Unending, but in my case was it the quest Alduin's Bane the one. After that quest I got a message on my screen that I should talk to Paarthurnax or Arngeir or Esbern. Well, Paarthurnax has been right in front of me... But he gave me The Fallen quest at first. Talking then to the Jarl of Whiterun (Balgruuf in my case) opened the quest Season Unending. Balgruuf thinks his town is unprotected while getting the dragon "arrested" therefore he wants a ceasefire. I haven't decided yet to join Stormcloaks nor Imperials, maybe that's the reason why it's different because I don't know how it would be if I had followed one side. --Quozar 15:46, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

Yeah I had a similar experience, only I never was given the option to start the Season Unending quest at all. Every walkthrough I read had Season unending after Alduin’s Bane and before The Fallen, I went straight from Alduin’s Bane to the Fallen and onto The World-Eater’s Eyrie. I was originally going to post this on the Season Unending discussion page but after reading the above comment I felt it belonged here instead. --65.27.167.139 05:39, 12 December 2011 (UTC)
If you read Season Unending's page, it will mention that you can skip Jarl Balgruuf's demand for a peace treaty and finish the Fallen right away. It also mentions this on the Fallen page. The reason that Season Unending comes first right now is that Season Unending has to be completed before you can finish The Fallen if you haven't done the Civil War quest line. In order to not get it, you have to complete the Civil War quest line and a lot of people weren't doing that. Dragons > War. Considering this, and the fact that you only have to talk to like two people after Alduin's Bane before getting Season Unending... that is why I put Season Unending before The Fallen on the page. It seemed just a lot more complicated having this one before Season Unending at the time because a lot of people were coming in to get a guide and having it in linear fashion seemed less likely to cause confusion. Basically: you get the Fallen, put it on hold, have to complete Season Unending, go back to Fallen. Enough time may have been passed now that we can fix it so that it reflects that. Aresvallis 00:38, 15 December 2011 (UTC)

() ok so i traped the dragon and freed him but i left to go to the store to buy some more pots for the trip and the dragons gone? i dont kno where he went so i tryed useing the shout that gets him there but he wont come till you kill the head dragon and i cant kill the head dragon till he comes can anyone help me plz im lvl 37 and i dont want to start over. — Unsigned comment by 63.141.28.26 (talk) at 00:31 on 13 December 2011

New dragon dialogue on completion of The Fallen?[edit]

I've completed this quest but haven't gone on to the next one yet, as I want to up my equipment and skills before I head off to parts unknown. Now every time a random dragon attacks me in the wilderness, it says something to me that starts with "Skuldafn..." and then a few more words of dragon language. What the dragon says hasn't been showing up in subtitles until just now, when I saw it for just a second ... and then Jordis decided to talk smack to the dragon and her subtitles trumped his. What are these dragons saying? Ninetails 22:13, 20 December 2011 (UTC)

It happened again and Jordis managed to keep quiet this time; I think the other three words are "fen kos dinak." The "fen kos" phrase appears in the title song Sons of Skyrim, so assuming for the moment that syntax in dragon language is similar enough to syntax in English for there to be rough correspondence (a big assumption), those two words would translate as "will be," which would work if the dragon is trying to make some kind of claim or threat: "Skuldafn will be..." ours? Your death? Anyway, it might make sense that way. Ninetails 00:23, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
I just got to the same part, only I went to Skuldafn straight away. The place is guarded by a bunch of generic dragons, so I think it's just a glitch with quest-related lines those guardians are supposed to have. 132.178.2.63 10:20, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

Prematurely Releasing Odahviing[edit]

If you finish the dialog with Odahviing with "We seem to be at an impasse, then," you can immediately go upstairs and release him yourself. Since he hasn't yet agreed to help you, he may go hostile, but will be an essential character and merely be stunned when his health is depleted. You can't retrap him. — Unsigned comment by 68.107.42.155 (talk) at 08:30 on 24 December 2011

neverending fight[edit]

A well equiped follower (with health absorb) could lead to a neverending fight: The dragon wont lose health, nor will the follower. I am watching Mjoll fighting against Odahviing now for over an hour... --84.151.144.155 16:51, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

attacking guard[edit]

For some reason the guard that msut release ohdaviing keeps attacking him while in captivity. Based on the guards dialogue he doesn't seem to notice that the dragi is imprisoned. — Unsigned comment by 82.73.72.148 (talk) at 18:58 on 10 May 2012

Parthanax killed[edit]

Although I killied Paarthurnax before the peace negotiations, and Arngeir refused to talk to me initially, I simply spoke to him a second time and the conference proceeded. There was no need to do any of the civil war quests at all.— Unsigned comment by 96.49.5.181 (talk) at 03:21 on 14 September 2012 (GMT)‎

Serious bug[edit]

When I call odahviing, and beginning attacking him, I can't seem to damage him in the slightest, he seems invincible. I've tried restarting before the point where I ask the Jarl if we can begin, and we go out onto the main porch, but it doesn't work. This is a major game-ruining glitch for me - any tips on what to do? Has anyone else had this problem? It is the same as the reported glitch when fighting Alduin on the throat of the world, which I also had, but could be fixed. 92.8.160.78 22:16, 23 February 2013 (GMT)

While I don't know why you can't damage him, it shouldn't be a problem as you don't need to attack him in any way to complete the quest. Elakyn (talk) 13:04, 24 February 2013 (GMT)

Yeah I've just worked out how to do it now! I used dragonrend and lured him backwards into the trap. I was worried because everyone seemed to be saying that you had to defeat him, and then put him in the trap. Still I find it odd that I couldn't damage him whatsoever.

Dragon Disapearance[edit]

When I called Alduin's ally, he came but then dissapeared and I can't do anything now24.114.22.72 16:47, 24 February 2013 (GMT)

Bend Will shout in the Dragonborn expansion.[edit]

Instead of using Dragonrend to make Odahviing land, would the Bend Will shout work during this quest?

Vignar and Odahviing not talking bug[edit]

I had the bug with Odahviing not talking once captured. I loaded a previous save then did the first Companions quest, Take Up Arms, to get Vignar out of Jorrvaskr. The Fallen quest was then able to be completed normally. So the second item in the bug list is confirmed.

Bugs Cleanup[edit]

  • In some cases, when the player speaks with Paarthurnax about Odahviing, then heads directly to the Jarl of Whiterun and defeats Odahviing without agreeing to start the next quest, the quest marker will direct the player to return to Esbern to receive information on how to lure Odahviing and will not clear indefinitely.
  • Odahviing may get stuck at the entrance to the courtyard and be unable to move forward toward the trap.
    • On PC On the PC, this can be solved via the console. Open the console and click on Odahviing to select him. Then, while standing directly in the trap meant for him, type moveto player. This will move the dragon into the trap and the scripted events will continue as normal.
  • Odahviing will only fly around Dragonsreach and it'll be impossible to attack or interact with him. To solve this, exit the Great Porch, wait for 20 hours, then re-enter.
  • If Cicero is your ally, you will need to dismiss him before calling Odahviing. Cicero will not obey your order to stand back, which causes Odahviing to not walk far enough into the porch to become trapped.
  • Sometimes the soldiers will simply not spring the trap. It seems that earlier version had Odahviing taking damage, but he has become invincible since some patch. On the PC, this can be solved via the console. Open the console and setstage to 180 when Odahviing is in the trap area. He will get trapped and you can continue as normal.

These bugs have sat unconfirmed long enough. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 22:05, 17 August 2013 (GMT)

  • Odahviing may appear but not enter combat, just flying around. Hitting him with ranged attacks makes him enter combat, but he will still never land. This bug can be overcome by using the console. As soon as Odahviing flies close to Dragonreach, type:
prid 45921
damageav health 6000
This will cause Odahviing to land. After a few hits his health will reset and he will stay still. Then type:
setObjectiveCompleted MQ301 60 1
setstage MQ301 200
Before talking to Odahviing, it has to be repositioned to be around the trap, or its model will disapear. Make a save and move under the trap, facing the door, and type:
moveto player
Then follow the dialogue as usual and free Odahviing by talking to the guard. He shall then move to the edge of the balcony. If Odahviing disappears after the dialogue, reload the save and try to place him on a different spot. ?
Also moving this one here since it's been unconfirmed for a few years and I suspect it's just a case of not using Dragonrend. --Oriwa Talk 17:29, 15 October 2020 (UTC)
(Moved out of original post.)
alternatively, use the console to kill the guard, which trigger the next phase as if the dragon had done it himself
(at least, it works in the case where odahviing keeps flying away from the castle, respawning over the city over and over, this break the loop.) — Unsigned comment by 2.7.91.160 (talk) at 13:30 on 11 February 2021 (UTC)

"Talk to Paarthurnax, Arngeir, or Esbern."[edit]

What's the point of this optional part of the quest? Every time I've defeated Alduin during Alduin's Bane, Paarthurnax automatically starts dialogue with my Dragonborn, which marks the optional part complete. I never had the chance to ask the other two. 71.207.114.145 20:00, 16 August 2019 (UTC)

An all-new and fun bug[edit]

Jarl Balgruuf still thinks he's at the "Diplomatic Immunity" gathering, and can't talk about capturing a dragon. I can only ask him to cause a distraction or chat about Elenwen. No way to fix it, I just used the console to nudge the quest to stage 120 to bypass chatting with him. What causes this, I have no idea, but in all my playthroughs over the years, I have never - EVER - had him show up at the party save for THIS playthrough. And apparently, the one time he does, he bugged out after and his brain was still at the party.174.28.50.70 16:28, 2 May 2024 (UTC)
