Pickpocketing[edit]

The detailed walkthrough states that pickpocketing counts toward the 500 gold, but I think I pickpocketed a necklace worth 700 gold without completing the job.

I'm also not sure about the second paragraph about having to steal from the keep rather than the inhabitants. I don't have a current save with a character in the thieve's guild, so can someone else confirm these? --99.74.1.111 11:08, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

  • Okay, here's what I've found to work pretty well: Steal items in the Keep of the city that are not in containers; only things that are visible as objects seem to work. Pickpocketing and stealing from chests, cupboards, etc., doesn't seem to work. Potions and weapons are good targets. 75.66.23.235 00:52, 26 December 2011 (UTC)

Hard when people like you[edit]

Everything in people's houses in some cities is just not "stealing" when you take it. This may prove very hard if you've helped these people out. — Unsigned comment by 86.42.248.146 (talk) at 15:35 on 4 December 2011

Yes, late in the game, this quest can become very difficult. However, there are always some targets who have no favor quests and/or will just never like you enough to let you take stuff from their house. Schiffy (talk) 18:54, 22 November 2012 (GMT)

Bugged?[edit]

I stole around 2000 gold worth of Items and it's not marking the quest a complete, nor is it even giving me a marker for it. Has this happened to anyone else? — Unsigned comment by 24.93.132.81 (talk) at 18:15 on 10 December 2011

I just ran into this issue as well. I stole about 750 gold in items from Whiterun, including some gems in Jorrvaskr from a chest in the side hall, which is flagged as owned by someone else in the Companions, even after I completed the Companions chain. Game still won't call it completed. 24.156.216.144 09:41, 21 January 2013 (GMT)
I got this as well. Every time I got this job in Solitude, no matter what or how many things I steal it never completes, so I have to quit it. I don't do pickpocket because my level is not high enough, everything I take is pure stealing (has label and marked red and all). — Unsigned comment by 111.95.100.210 (talk) at 13:10 on 8 April 2013
Me too I was in Windhelm i stole a necklace work 17500 and i didn't complete it, same when i stole a 700 gold ring! — Unsigned comment by 80.43.109.169 (talk) at 18:41 on 21 April 2013

Stone of Barenziah[edit]

Stole 1 stone of Barenziah and it completed the quest. — Unsigned comment by 71.203.77.37 (talk) at 05:04 on 21 December 2011

Yeah, there's an interesting bug with these. They're NEVER considered theft in the general case, even when you're taking them out of Jarl's bedrooms. But if you're on a Bedlam job in that city, even though they still say "Take" rather than "Steal", if anybody sees you take one you suddenly get a bounty. Aliana 10:33, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
I suspect they always say "Take" instead of "Steal", but I have also received a bounty when someone saw me take one. I was not on a Bedlam job. I'll bring it up on the discussion page for the stones.--159.182.1.4 18:03, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
Oddly enough, this is no longer working for me. I don't know if this has been fixed by an Unofficial Patch or something (because I know it used to work back in the day when I used far fewer mods), but last time I picked up a Stone of Barenziah from a target city, I had to pick up some 300 gold worth of other items before the quest would flag as completed. (Also, it's not wholly true that taking a Stone never counts as theft, as I can state based on Wuunferth's reaction when I took his stone right in front of him. The stone didn't flag as stolen, but it got the guards' attention right quick.) Shahrazad the Listener (talk) 01:55, 29 November 2017 (UTC)
Some of the information here is extremely outdated, as you should see from how long ago they were posted. However, it is probably useful to counteract it for future reference. Stones are always considered theft, always, except when not owned (eg dungeons). They are bugged and show a "take" instead of steal. The bug also means that the owner does not get "alarmed" if you take it, but will report it and give you a bounty (this is fixed by the USKP 2.0.0). I don't know if the bug also resulted in the price increase when stealing it for a job, but it hasn't gotten an individual fix by the patches. Stealing the same item[edit]

I was testing a theory in Whiterun and maybe it'll help anyone having the same problem I am. I was having a lot of difficulty finding things that actually count as theft because everyone likes me so much. So, I stole the little locket that's in the Jarl's kids room, dropped and and picked it back up four times and it completed the quest. It's a work around you can use if the people of whichever Hold are buying the act and consider you a hero. My biggest problem was that Delvin had told me to hit Whiterun so many times that the smug wizard only had one petty soul gem left on his desk and the Jarl's room was nearly empty, so I'm glad I found something that will let me keep the gold flowing.

Cheers

Thanks for the tip. It works. Annabellalot 20:16, 13 February 2012 (UTC)

This worked for me too! However, I realized that you have to "steal" more than one (different) item. What happened was I dropped a very expensive necklace, and picked it up, and it didn't do anything. I even dropped the same necklace multiple times. So I figured it didn't work. But then I dropped a second one, which was different, and it completed the objective.

For that matter, you could **bring** stolen jewelry to the city with you, and just drop it and pick it up in a hidden area.

Failed Quest...[edit]

...I experienced a situation in which I was sent to Solitude to complete a bedlam job. I completed the quest without being arrested, but when I went back to Delvin, he told me that I failed the quest because I was arrested. I was not arrested, however I was caught by a little boy in the town general store (I think it's called bits and pieces...not sure).

So here's what happened: I picked the lock and went inside. The little boy in question was standing right there at the entrance to the door, and as a result I was detected immediately. I left and reentered, and then activated my special power 'Shadowcloak of Nocturnal' in order to become invisible. He couldn't see me, so I proceeded to ransack the place. There wasn't much in there so I left and headed to the Thalmor headquarters, where I proceeded to grab as much as I could. Lucky for me, no one was even inside the headquarters and there was a small assortment of extremely valuable items inside...

...I didn't get arrested. Guards didn't even approach me. The only person who detected me was the little boy inside the general store. I still failed the job. I know it's not a big deal, considering it's a radiant quest, but I thought I'd bring it up for discussion.

Has this happened to anyone else? Should this be considered a bug?

I think it qualifies as a bug on the assumption that the boy in question wasn't detecting you when you stole the items and you were truly undetected in the Thalmor headquarters. If you were going around the headquarters standing up straight on the assumption that no one was around to detect you anyway, that assumption might have been wrong. --68.41.38.202 16:53, 2 January 2020 (GMT)

Stripped Guards[edit]

I had the master pickpocket ability, so I decided to strip all the guards of their armor and equipment in the hold. Then I took 3 gems and that worked. Seems that pickpocketing guards does not work. — Unsigned comment by 76.91.113.43 (talk) at 06:16 on 20 September 2012

Moved note[edit]

  • Early in the game, the Bedlam Job is easily the most lucrative of all the Thieves Guild jobs. Unlike the other Thieves Guild jobs, which reward leveled gold, the Bedlam job always pays 500 gold. You also will have the opportunity to sell all the loot you steal, as it is not removed from your inventory upon quest completion.

Yeah as I said in edit summary, I've done this over a hundred times and I never get 500 gold reward. I do, however, get the same amount of gold as for all the missions :-) Someone else want to take 2 seconds to check as well?--Catmaniac66 (talk) 04:22, 24 November 2012 (GMT)

Bug related to main quest?[edit]

Experienced a bug with my bedlam quest in Riften not ending regardless of how many items I took. It's not they like me, they were red and clearly marked as thefts. I've had pickpocketing count toward bedlam in the past, but not this time. Chest-cracking either. SO, I went to Delvin and quit the quest, then asked to start a new Bedlam quest. Same problem. I'm wondering if this might have something to do with where I am in the main quest. I killed Mercer and have the Skeleton key and the Eyes of the Fallmer. But I haven't done the Twilight Sepulchre yet. I'm also noticing that I'm not getting the dialogue for the Fallmer eye from Delvon. Might all this have to do with not having returned the Skeleton Key yet? — Unsigned comment by Ftjrwrites (talkcontribs) at 06:41 on 22 January 2013

Bedlam Job in Raven Rock[edit]

I've had this Bedlam job since before I first came too Raven Rock, but it doesn't seem to matter how much I steal it never completes. I've read and tried all the advice given on this discussion page. Is there an issue with this, or a conflict because of having it before coming here or what??? any help appreciated. Biffa. 90.202.87.78 16:18, 14 March 2013 (GMT)

From what I've heard, this is just a very buggy quest location and you probably cannot complete the job without a patch or bugfix. Are you on PC? Vely►t►e 16:33, 14 March 2013 (GMT)

No PS3 I'm afraid, think it's something to do with none of the stolen flags remaining when returning to Skyrim? Biffa (talk) 23:58, 20 March 2013 (GMT)

The quest isn't intended to function outside of the 5 major cities of Skyrim. Bethesda forgot to make sure Raven Rock wouldn't get picked for these. Arthmoor (talk) 00:40, 21 March 2013 (GMT)

Sometimes you have to accept another job[edit]

I finished this job and the journal told me to see Devlin. The trouble was that when I spoke to him, there was no option to inform him of the completion. I had to accept a fishing job to get that option. I have not seen this glitch noted here? I am on 360, by the way... Chaosworrier (talk) 14:59, 23 April 2014 (GMT)

Mzinchaleft[edit]

Delvin keeps giving me jobs in Mzinchaleft. I know the ruin eventually is part of the main quest but.. First he gave me a bedlam job but the only thing that came up available to be stolen was a ruined book. I had to quit it but now the only bedlam or fishing jobs he gives me are in Mzinchaleft. He has given me at least three different names of people who just are not in there to pickpocket things off of, and thats the only bedlam he will give me. Are people eventually there??? — Unsigned comment by 99.197.183.36 (talk) at 05:26 on 13 July 2014

It's impossible for Delvin to send you to Mzinchaleft without mods as he doesn't have the dialogue for that location. Are you sure it's here or could it be Raven Rock, as the quest marker would then not point to the right place? The names of the people would help if this isn't the case. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 10:44, 13 July 2014 (GMT)
Delvin doesn't, as far as I know, have any special dialogue for any particular location. But more to the point, I am also receiving Bedlam jobs in Mzinchaleft. I do have many mods installed, though I don't believe any of them change anything to do with the Thieves Guild. Perhaps it's 'Interesting NPCs'? Eldubya (talk) 20:00, 13 July 2014 (GMT)
The only named person ever in there is Maluril, who is only excluded from the fishing job because he is not in a city. Does the journal entry say Mzinchaleft, or is there anything besides the marker? The names of the NPCs would greatly help (you can look at the people in Raven Rock to see if one stands out). Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 20:17, 13 July 2014 (GMT)
I have also received a Fishing quest to retrieve something from Maluril. The journal entry definitely says Mzinchaleft. I never looked at the marker, but I will try and get another 'job' in Mzinchaleft and get back to you ASAP. Eldubya (talk) 21:46, 13 July 2014 (GMT)
I'm about 99% certain that this is coming from some mod, probably a dirty one where the change is unintentional. The bedlam job absolutely requires that the quest take place in a city, and Mzinchaleft just isn't a city. A mod must have either made it a city or otherwise altered the conditions for the quest. Robin Hood  (talk) 03:19, 14 July 2014 (GMT)
According to BOSS, the only mods which I have with dirty edits are 'Update.esm', 'Dawnguard.esm', 'HearthFires.esm', 'Dragonborn.esm', 'unlimitedbookshelves.esp' and 'ethereal_elven_overhaul.esp'. I don't think any of these would make any change to Mzinchaleft... I think this shall remain an unsolved mystery due to my lack of knowledge of the Creation Kit! Eldubya (talk) 16:31, 15 July 2014 (GMT)

() BOSS can only tell you ones it knows about (or it might be guessing...not sure). Either way, it's not going to be all-inclusive. If you feel like it, you can send me a list of all your mods and I'll go through them and see if we can figure out what's causing it. The easiest way to do that is to press Windows-R (or click on Start, Run, if you prefer), then type %LocalAppData%\Skyrim\loadorder.txt, hit Enter, and send me a copy of whatever comes up. Then I can download any mods I don't already have and figure out which one's causing the problem. Robin Hood  (talk) 17:13, 15 July 2014 (GMT)

Thanks, RobinHood. That'd be great. The email has been sent. Eldubya (talk) 17:56, 15 July 2014 (GMT)
So, I downloaded all your mods that I didn't have (which was most of them) and went through them in batches of five to ten. Quite naturally, the mod I was looking for was in the very last batch. Ugh! The mod that causes this problem is Interesting NPCs. Whether it was intentional or not, I don't know, and I'm not about to go through 14,000 posts(!) to find out. On the bright side, I found a couple of new mods in all that that I think I'll like. Robin Hood  (talk) 01:29, 16 July 2014 (GMT)
I'm glad you got something out of this endeavour! Yes, I suspected that Interesting NPCs was causing it. Thanks for finding out! Eldubya (talk) 14:01, 16 July 2014 (GMT)

Completing by accepting a miscellaneous quest.[edit]

I have completed the bedlam job in Riften by just accepting a miscellaneous quest from the Riften steward Anuriel to kill a bandit leader, I don't even kill the target only accepted the quest, I have also steal a flawless amethyst for a sweep job, but it only have a value of 180, I play on a Xbox updated to the latest version (1.9.31.0.8) — Unsigned comment by Loginus (talkcontribs) at 17:04 on 2 November 2014

Get Bedlam and Sweep in same city[edit]

Do a quicksave immediately after accepting bedlam/sweep, then quick load until it gives you the city you want. When you have this quest combined with sweep, you will complete both quests with the sweep job. 73.110.45.32 21:02, 1 February 2021 (UTC) -Mode7Ghost
