Shrine quest[edit]

You must complete Vaermina's Daedric Shrine quest, as well as one giant kill quest before the Jarl will even offer the opportunity to become Thane of the Pale. Torinir 16:43, 21 November 2011 (UTC)

Thank you, I was just wondering since I've helped people and the Jarl hasn't got any work for me. Tockenen 08:00, 27 December 2011 (UTC)
So is this any Kill the Giant quest? I've had a couple with previous characters as odd jobs picked up in taverns; do you meant this type? Because I can't make the Jarl give me one specifically... — Unsigned comment by 80.229.165.55 (talk) at 14:24 on 13 October 2012‎
There are two different "kill the giant" type quests in the game: the generic bounty quest given by innkeepers, stewards, or jarls, and the jarl-specific quest which I believe is the one needed to get this (and can only be given by the jarl, I think). You may have to finish Waking Nightmare first before they'll give it to you though. — ABCface 15:48, 13 October 2012 (GMT)

To clarify[edit]

You must complete Waking Nightmare as well as one giant kill before Jarl Skald will talk to you. If you sided with the Imperial Legion during the Civil War, Jarl Brina Merilis will offer you the 'Assist the people' quest without these requirements.— Unsigned comment by 98.176.242.147 (talk) at 18:05 on 17 January 2012

Blade of the Pale[edit]

I completed the quest to be named Thane of the Pale, and received the Blade of the Pale. It was not a sword, but instead a mace. I reloaded and spoke to Skald 10 times, each time receiving the same mace. Xyzzy 05:37, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

This is a known bug that affects a few different quests. In most cases, you'll get a sword of some kind, but one of the lists accidentally produces maces instead of swords. See Leveled Lists if you're curious to read the official bug report. In theory, I think you should be able to get something other than a mace, but perhaps the game had already generated the reward before you saved, or perhaps you're just at a level where that's the only thing coming up. Robin Hoodtalk 06:56, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
Its not a bug and its not always a sword as stated in many other places. "May be a sword, greatsword, battle axe, war axe or mace." - Killerchronic (talk) 01:37, 19 May 2013 (GMT)

Giant killing quest unavailable[edit]

I have completed the 'Waking Nightmare' quest but Jarl Skald only has two options available (no option to offer the giant killing quest). I have made sure that there is no other similar radiant quest open, such as a bounty on a dragon, that might prevent this type of quest from starting. I managed to become Thane of the Pale with a previous character and the quest was definately offered by the Jarl (as opposed to just going out and doing it). Is there a minimum level that the player must attain before the 'Thane of the Pale' can be achieved? I understand that a player must get to level 20 before they can become Thane of one of the other cities (Markarth I think). Any advice would be gratefully received. Mastarna 03:26, 14 April 2012 (UTC)

I'm in the same mess. I got a kill a dragon quest and the journal told me to report to the Jarl for a reward but after he thanked me the instructions remained in the journal and the Jarl is as described above. IE, it be stuck and buggy. We need console commands to advance things. Sniffles 22:40, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
Completing 'Waking Nightmare' will cause Jarl Skald to lose all dialog options except for the two ones mentioned above. The only way I could figure out yet is to complete the giant killing quest before completing 'Waking Nightmare'.
This also makes Heljarchen Hall unavailabe (if you have the Hearthfire Addon), as long als Skald is the Jarl of the Pale. As a "workaround" you can only side wih the Imperials in the civil war and conquer the Pale. The new Jarl will offer to purchase land. --91.43.61.183 10:24, 11 January 2013 (GMT)
I had the same problem. The Giant Killing Quest requires level 22. And I just deleted a Lvl 20... — Unsigned comment by 68.103.113.199 (talk) at 07:30 on 25 February 2013
The quest 'Bounty: Giant' page says you need to be level 20 to receive the quest. I was wondering about why the quest wasn't dropping too, then found the page.--86.21.65.220 20:14, 23 March 2013 (GMT)
When reloading a save file from before you finished the 'Waking Nightmare' quest might fix the problem — Unsigned comment by 145.53.101.7 (talk) at 15:04 on 21 May 2014

() Reloading won't make a difference. 86.21.65.220 is correct, you need to be level 20 for the giant-killing quest to start. You can also start this quest by joining the Legion; when you conquer the Pale for the Empire, the new jarl will let you start this quest without any other prerequisites. 'Course you'll probably be level 20 by then. --Morrolan (talk) 21:05, 16 September 2015 (UTC)

Helping the people of Dawnstar[edit]

I'm stuck at 2 out of 3 radiant quests needed to become Thane of the Pale. I fetched a book for Rustleif and the Void-Salts for Captain Wayfinder (twice!), but no one else is offering a quest. (Playing on Xbox.) SonGoharotto 01:58, 24 July 2012 (UTC)

Have you tried doing other quests on this list? One easy one is giving a coin to a beggar, this one typically works for thane quests. ABCface 02:54, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
Oops, just realized there's no beggar quest listed. The quest for drunks would be the easiest on the list then, along with selling ore. ABCface 02:55, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
I eventually figured out that selling ore counts. SonGoharotto 13:12, 31 July 2012 (UTC)

Karl the drunk miner[edit]

Giving Karl a drink also counts as helping (he can be found working for Beitild). — Unsigned comment by WalB (talkcontribs) at 12:29 on 9 September 2012

Blade of the Pale[edit]

How come this item, sword/mace whatever has no page on any of this site? Does on the other wiki's so some of the items features are static even if leveled.

Deliver the note quest for Aeri[edit]

Either my game glitched or this quest does not count towards helping the people of the hold. Completed this quest and still stuck at 2 of 3 helped. I'm guessing it's because I also sold her firewood before comopleting. — Unsigned comment by 184.5.228.136 (talk) at 04:59 on 26 March 2014‎

Yes, you're right. The gain is based on changing your relationship with her. Since you're already her friend, doing the delivery after chopping wood (or vice versa) doesn't change your relationship with her and therefore doesn't count towards Thaneship. Robin Hood  (talk) 18:33, 26 March 2014 (GMT)
