missed payment[edit]
ok so i gone around collected payment from all 3 sept the guy you get the quest from says some one aint paid in full what am i missing?86.164.147.58 21:24, 19 November 2011 (UTC)
Keerava hired someone to kill me?[edit]
I'm wondering if this happened to anyone else. A while after i got her payment and finished that quest, i was surprised by a group of 4 bandits down the Karth river, close to Karthwasten. One of them carried Keerava's instruction to kill me with no specific reason given, but probably because of the way i made her pay. So, did that happen to anyone else? Brynjolf stuck[edit]
On my 360 version, Brynjolf is stuck in his stall and will not move to the Ragged Flagon. I completed "A Chance Arrangement", was told to meet him, and he has not moved. I've waited like the page suggests, but have wasted about two weeks of game-days with no result. Should I give up or is there anything that can be done here? — Unsigned comment by 174.55.106.118 (talk) at 21:09 on 30 November 2011
- I don't know who added the part about using wait to fix it, but it's been confirmed time and time again that waiting doesn't do anything for this bug on any platform. You may want to head on to the "A Chance Arrangement" talk page, it's actually an issue with that quest that causes the bug. Aresvallis 17:02, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
A Fix for Brynjolf stuck and it works[edit]
Ok I figured out how to fix this. Here is what worked for me. Sprint Brynjolf and back him up ALL THE WAY to the door to the ragged flaggon. Initiate conversation with him and then press B and back out and exit through the door. HE SHOULD be on the other side with you when it loads. Attack him and make him chase you to the ragged flaggon and then yield. BINGO begin quest. I am FINALLY doing the thieves guild. Thank you and have a wonderful day — Unsigned comment by 72.197.242.161 (talk) at 02:25 on 6 December 2011
- I'm moving this as the bug is caused by A Chance Arrangement quest aliases not clearing. It really should be on that page. Aresvallis 23:41, 8 December 2011 (UTC)
Alternate method doesn't work[edit]
"If you fail to convince one NPC, brawl with one of the other two and wait a day; word gets around and the reluctant NPC gladly pays up to avoid a similar fate." It doesn't work. I purposely failed on Keerava then brawled with Bersi then waited a day and Keerava still doesn't want to talk to me, even if I waited for more then a day... — Unsigned comment by 219.89.215.202 (talk) at 03:52 on 10 December 2011
- Actually, it does, but perhaps not the way that describes it. For me, I had to threaten Keerava and stole Haelga's statue, and Bersi finally paid up. Brawling may be bugged. Also, please remember to sign your posts. Aresvallis 23:27, 10 December 2011 (UTC)
- On all my playthoroughs brawling was an option for all targets, I only did the optional things once (break the urn etc) because brawling doesn't seem to lower their dispsition towards you, but breaking and threatning do. And i don't want to have to pay higher prices at any shops.--The Silencer 01:07, 10 March 2012 (UTC)
Haelga location bug?[edit]
Has anyone else experienced the issue with Haelga being inaccessible (on PC version)? When inside the Riften city cell it shows her quest marker location as a standard in-cell marker but which is located outside the city on the world map by Merryfair Farm. If you go outside the city, then the quest marker location shows as a outside-cell marker hovering over the Riften city marker.
She is accessible from inside the Riften city cell via the console "tcl" command and her dialog works to allow completion of the quest but after the quest is completed it appears that she is still located there. Could this be caused by another side quest causing her to be located at Merryfair Farm (at least temporarily till that quest completes)? — Unsigned comment by 76.88.45.56 (talk) at 21:59 on 18 December 2011
Brynjolf stuck (2)[edit]
I had a problem with Brynjolf being stuck at The Ragged Flagon. He wouldn't move to meet Mercer Frey at the Cistern. I solved it by walking to the Cistern alone (passing through the secret/hidden closet to the right behind the counter). — Unsigned comment by 188.106.253.235 (talk) at 16:24 on 3 February 2012
Notes section..[edit]
I suppose I don't quite understand the notes, otherwise they are unnecessary. Avoiding skill usage? And letting a follower clear the way as well as using a skillstone (or any other way to lockpick) sound to me like any generic game tactic. Is this really quest specific? As I see it, the whole notes section can be erased. I am as usual a little hesitant before slashing away something bigger so before I cut in.. Anyone, any thoughts or explanations that makes sense? --Middleofsweden 18:45, 19 February 2012 (UTC)
- That's definitely style-specific. The only part that could be retained is the part about unlocking the door, but that's already mentioned in the walkthrough. I removed the section. --Velyanthe 21:30, 19 February 2012 (UTC)
- Great, now it looks clean :-) --Middleofsweden 17:29, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
Moider![edit]
While Brynjolf specifically asks you not to kill the debtors, if you do it doesn't seem to affect the quest. You automatically collect the debt once they're dead and although Brynjolf isn't happy about it he will grudgingly give you the next quest. — Unsigned comment by 82.38.238.250 (talk) at 18:15 on April 16, 2012
- Yeah, it's similar for other quests--you can't fail them if you kill someone, but he's unhappy. Vely►Talk►Email 22:20, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
Bersi[edit]
I didn't have to d anything to Bersi. Just told him I had a message and he said that there was no need to explain and that he had the money. 98.217.230.157 00:15, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

Loud and Clear not starting[edit]
I keep hitting the last note in the bugs section, 100% reproducable with my save. Starting from a save where I've never even been to Riften, I complete the first two TG quests. On talking to Brynjolf, Taking Care of Business ends but Loud and Clear never starts. Brynjolf walks me through to the cistern, and everybody turns hostile and attacks.
Does anybody know a fix for this, or even what causes the bug? I confirmed using the console that "setstage tg02 10" does nothing, nor does any other console command with tg02. Very frustrating. 50.46.214.19 06:39, 30 August 2012 (UTC)
- Nevermind. This was caused by a very popular player house mod called "Castle Grey". Hadn't even considered mods, thanks to Skyrimplayer's deletionism on 8/24. Thank god for page history. I recommend either allowing notes about removing client mods, or removing that bug bullet entirely and letting people assume it's Bethesda's bad coding as usual. 50.46.214.19 22:16, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

- Does anyone know what specifically within mods would prevent Loud and Clear from beginning? I had a mod I had made last year, clued in that having followed the mod creation tutorial (aka the e3 test elements getting bundled in) was part of what was bugging the Thieves' Guild questline for me on playthrough. Had went through and deleted as much as I saw, but apparently, have missed something, as Loud and Clear is not starting. (Whereas, toggling the mod off, allows it to start and play through as per expected)99.241.131.208 20:36, 9 August 2013 (GMT)
- found answers on the Creation Kit wiki, to some extent (had gone through manually hunting for E3 references, then tried the instructions and used TES5Edit and it seems to be working properly now) http://www.creationkit.com/TES5Edit_Cleaning_Guide_-_TES5Edit 99.241.131.208 21:44, 9 August 2013 (GMT)

Trying to scam Brynjolf[edit]
Would it be worth mentioning on the article that if you try to pull a fast one on Brynjolf and spend or stash all of your gold somewhere before turning in the quest, he won't accept it? 97.90.133.120 17:29, 9 September 2012 (EDT)
Attack by thieves guild...[edit]
I finish the quest but encounter the bug where I am consider a trespasser in Ragged Flagon Cistern (Listed under bugs section). No solution was listed... anyone know how to fix it? Or is it just stuck permanently? 202.156.9.226 20:54, 5 October 2012 (GMT)
Brynjolf Hmms after quest completion[edit]
I complete the quest and Brynjolf says to follow him but then he keeps saying "Hmm" and if I follow him they all attack me, no solution is listed and I can't find one on other sites. — Unsigned comment by 86.128.17.224 (talk) at 16:06 on 14 October 2012
- It's reported that the following mods, Castle Grey, 7K Better Whiterun, both can be causes to this scenario.

They will sometimes just pay up[edit]
I am not sure about how, but I have spent some times with different characters. These people will sometimes just pay up whatever they need to without hurting the disposition or doing whatever extortion. But I am not sure why and how. Maybe something about the fame in the hold? It is like sometimes you would be greeted friendlily by some shopkeepers without having done a quest for them. -Joshua.yathin.yu (talk) 08:00, 24 March 2013 (GMT)
No thieves guild armour for Tonillia?[edit]
Go to the training room off the cistern. There are a pair of guild boots on a cupboard. Use these. Tonilla accepts them.
Leave the conversation. Go back and she gives the masters armour. User:Tafsheep. — Unsigned comment by 81.156.9.252 (talk) at 02:44 on 1 April 2013
Taking Care of Business doesn't initiate on Xbox 360.[edit]
I completed "A Chance Arrangement", successfully I might add. Unfortunately "Taking Care of Business" did not appear afterwards. I cannot initiate dialogue with Brynjolf as all he says is "Hmmm?" He is in the market from maybe 9 or 10 PM until 8 PM the following day. He then makes one trip through the Ratway to the Ragged Flagon and then to the Cistern. I cannot initiate dialog at any point, he doesn't change into the guild armor. Also when I enter the cistern I am acknowledged as a trespasser and the men inside will attack. Immediately after a few seconds in the Cistern, Brynjolf returns to the market and stays there until the following evening. Characters such as Delvin Mallory tell me to finish with Brynjolf and then come talk to them. Thieves are spawning randomly every night in the marketplace. I have attempted to attack Brynjolf or get caught stealing as some players have suggested. I don't have any saves previous to "A Chance Arrangement" Please respond if you have encountered this problem and have a solution. — Unsigned comment by Danerius xDAx (talk • contribs) at 14:52 on 16 September 2013
Brynjolf's "hmmm..." Bug expanded (Possible fix)[edit]
I got to the point where (after the Bugs section) where the quest is completed ever before Brynjolf enters the Cistern.
I found out if the player is added to the Thieves' Guild faction with player.addfac 00029da9 0 (maybe 1 or another will work too) the members of the Cistern not get angry and not get transpassing. Somehow the TG02 quest can't be started at this point, not even with the console (maybe caused because of a mod that alters the conversation of NPC's).
My fix is:
- open the console
- player.addfac 00029da9 0 ("Thieves' Guild")
- startquest TG02 (not absolutely necessary)
- startquest TG03 (not absolutely necessary)
- setstage TG03 10
Then everything should work as normal.

Read a book, fix a bug![edit]
I couldn't get loud and clear to start either. Then I read the book on troll slaying in the corner of the room and BAMB! Quest started.
I killed someone[edit]
I killed one of the people to get their debt and now it won't let me finish the quest because brynjolf keeps telling me I have inherited their debt
killer kart? or deadly 'hmmm' bug?[edit]
every time i complete the second quest for brynjolf (getting the debts from the 3 people) he talks, i answer then i follow him to the 'super secret' door. before he enters the cistern i ran in front and disabled the wooden cart that i thought was making him stick there, but i tried talking to him and every time he always says 'hmmm?' then after a bit he attacks me.
is there a fix to this? also if i talk to him after he finished talking when hes walking through he says hmmm? again. please help!! on my other save i have tried doing the setogbectivecompleted TG02 200 1 command code, i've tried disabling and enabling him and nothing has worked
Marriages to Helga and Bersi[edit]
In the notes section it say "If you're married to either Bersi or Haelga, they will pay you without having to threaten them or brawl with them." However there is no possible way you can marry either of them without mods or console commands. There are no quests to raise Haelga's disposition, and Bersi is already married to another NPC. --athf (talk) 05:04, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
- Good spot, neither of them can be married without adding them to the appropriate factions, which is only possible with the console on PC. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 16:31, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
