Stuck with just Maurice in my party[edit]

I took this guy on before being named Thane, and now I can't get rid of him so my house-whatever escort chick can follow me. If I try to talk to him he just asks if we're there yet, basically. I really don't want to drag this guy half-way across the province now that I actually have someone useful to bring instead. Is this normal, or should I be able to dismiss him? I even tried killing him, but Thad didn't change the house-girls response of "looks like you already have someone with you". Any ideas? — Unsigned comment by 166.137.142.32 (talk) at 05:56 on 2 December 2011

have you tried letting him being killed by someone else? and is there any trace of him in your questlog? — Unsigned comment by 87.155.87.54 (talk) at 20:34 on 29 January 2012
find a solution yet? let us know if you did pls. i was thinking the console might help with that but not sure. i do know that you can make Maurice invincible using console command "setessential" using his ID. it's a sure way to finish the quest with him being alive. but just to make you feel better, my experience with Maurice is that even IF you have a capable follower or more [i had Uthgerd and also a summoned flame attronach] he will still manage to kill himself... 217.121.86.187 17:58, 26 April 2012 (UTC)

Inventory and Weapons[edit]

When on my way to Eldergleam Sanctuary with Maurice following, I stopped off at Halted Stream. Upon entering the mine area, he equipped both an iron war axe and a staff of sparks. I thought he may have picked them up, so I reloaded to verify, and there was no way he could have. The article says he carries only the clothes on his back. After he got his stupid self killed (for the fourth time reloading and trying to save him!) I let him stay dead and was able to recover both items from his corpse. Should this be mentioned in the article, as a possible random spawn of inventory for this NPC? --Scribbles (Crayolamanic) 10:59, 14 February 2013 (GMT)

I've had him randomly pick up weapons from bandits i've killed. He tends to pick up one-handed weapons and occasionally staves, and i've yet to see him pick up a shield or a two-handed weapon in any of my play-throughs. VycDarkshadow (talk) 02:29, 2 December 2013 (GMT)
I too didn't think to reverse pickpocket him and equip him before accepting his request to join my party and since once you agree hes always aware of me and the only option is to "talk" to him. I haven't yet tried aggro-ing and then turning invisible or something to pickpocket him... One thing I noticed though, at first he only used fists then after a battle or two he started wielding a steel dagger. So I have this theory I'm going to test...that he loots only bodies HE kills. So I'm going to go out of my way to make sure he delivers the killing blow on an enemy and see if he comes out of it wielding better weapons.99.49.255.39 04:46, 19 April 2018 (UTC)

Dead without warning[edit]

On my latest playthrough (360, DB, DG, HF installed, + latest update), after reverse-pickpocketing some enchanted gear on him, I added Maurice to my "adventuring party," along with Serana and Njada Stonearm (using the exploit in the DG questline that allows for an extra follower). Before leaving Whiterun, I picked up a rescue mission from Vilkas, to save Silana Petreia from the clutches of the warlocks of Fellglow Keep. Since it wasn't too far out of my way, I decided to let Maurice tag along, figuring he'd be useful in his new gear. Well, he was--the four of us dispatched the exterior guards, entered through the dungeons, and found Silana--who helped us finish off the accessible warlocks in the keep proper (this was long after completing Hitting the Books). Things were just peachy with the five of us, then all went awry upon exiting Fellglow Keep--only Serana, Njada, Silana, and myself exited--I had to go back inside to find Maurice, who lay dead right in front of the exit--even though he was still alive when I left. I reloaded and tried exiting via the dungeons, but the same thing happened--Maurice laying dead inside Fellglow Keep proper. I reloaded and tried killing Silana, then exiting to Skyrim, but that didn't work, either. I eventually gave up on rescuing Silana, and reloaded an earlier save where we had just entered the dungeons and was able to exit back the way we came with Maurice alive and well. Note that I'd taken Maurice into Guldun Rock Cave before we went to Fellglow, and didn't have an issue with him suddenly dying of cardiac arrest before exiting the cave. I may later try rescuing Silana without entering the keep proper and see if Maurice survives then. Anyone else experience anything like this?--149.160.118.51 23:10, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

He's not essential, so he can just be killed. I've seen him die in some weird situations, and tend to hate having him with me as he's nothing but a load. If you're building a giant adventuring party, do not include him. Not sure why he could be dying, besides you just missing him dying, somehow. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 03:28, 3 July 2015 (UTC)

Attacking Maurice[edit]

The article says attacking him results in a bounty from Whiterun but I've attacked him several times usually by accident(though I don't trust him because hes annoying and always runs into me full speed when I stop moving which I interpret as backstabbing dry runs and will possibly push me over a steep ledge someday- SO I've already vowed to kill him once I fulfill the promise of letting him come to sanctuary with me.) but on one mission I had to strategically strike him on purpose to keep him alive so he would aggro and follow me instead of charging armed only with a dagger into a squad of deadly Draugrs. I needed to set an ambush for them in order to keep him from dying in the fight. Never once have I gotten a bounty for striking him..so I'm wondering if maybe this is only true if you attack him in Whiterun's hold..I don't think I ever struck him anywhere near Whiterun.. Also it might be worthy to note: If you get into a fight with him, sheathing any weapon you have readied makes him forgive you, ending the fight and also therefore averting your followers from abruptly murdering him. If you are unarmed when you strike him.. "sheathing" your fists doesn't seem to end the fight though..I think I was able to ready a weapon and then sheath them to end it that time, once I realized dropping my fists was not enough...not sure though..I may have had to reload a save that time.99.49.255.39 04:26, 19 April 2018 (UTC)
