Reference[edit]

Did anyone else catch the reference to Beowulf in the name of High Hrothgar? — Unsigned comment by 68.102.180.85 (talk) at 21:38 on 26 November 2011

yes, check the lore page --Zar Pof 22:48, 4 December 2011 (UTC) page.

Banners[edit]

Has anyone looked at or translated the banners that are hanging on the ceiling in the room with the fire pit and seats? Falseglory 01:10, 3 December 2011 (UTC)

I've tried but I cannot find what some of the words mean. The banners in the foyer run (transliterated) on the left hand banner: "Lok Eo" and on the right: Thu'um Tu'um". "Lok" means "sky" and I think we all know what "Thu'um" means but I have no clue about "Eo" and "Tu'um". In the room with the fire pit and the hall leading to it, all the banners have one of the two above phrases on them. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable in Dragonish could translate them completely but I cannot. Coronus 04:09, 9 December 2011 (UTC)
A little update: "EO" is incorrect. The word is actually "BO" (it was my first translation in game and I mixed up the letters) not that it it changes much as I still have no idea what it means. Coronus 02:53, 22 December 2011 (UTC)
I think I have an educated guess at what these words could mean. Tu'um shares characteristics with Thu'um (Voice) as well as Su'um (Breath). I have come to guess that when it has a 'um at the end, it refers to the person or being that possesses the thing in question. Thu'um means YOUR Voice; Su'um means YOUR breath. Tu by itself means "Hammer". So if you put Tu with 'um it would literally mean "Your Hammer". If this much is true, I would imagine that Tu'um means something along the lines of "Tool". This would make "Thu'um Tu'um" mean something like "Your Voice is a Tool", perhaps a tool for worship, as the Greybeards describe.
As for Bo, it seems to be a prefix for a few words such as "Bok" (Age) and "Bonaar" (Humble). So "Lok Bo" could mean something along the lines of 'the sky is an elder'. "Bo" is also a prefix for words like "Bodiis" and "Bovul" (Borrow; Flee), so I have my doubts about that translation. Nonetheless, its a start. Uberfish 8:17, 16 January 2012
Isn't it obvious? "Lok bo, Thu'um tu'um." double u's are always separated by an apostrophe when in English (Su'um, Thu'um, etc). What Greybeard phrase have we heard that matches to this? Sky above, Voice within ... Yeesh, UESP is kinda off these days. 66.199.245.50 21:39, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
I've been away for awhile so I did not update but my educated guess was "Sky above, voice within" (nice to see someone else came to the same conclusion) but Uberfish has an interesting point with Tu'uM since that translation could also make sense. Pity there is no way to verify it either way. It would be nice to add the translation to the article.Coronus 00:47, 31 January 2012 (UTC)

Ascent[edit]

In addition to the Bears and Ice Trolls currently mentioned, at level 23 or so I encountered 3 Ice Wraiths. One was near the bottom, then the other two were together about 2/3rds of the way up. Nilibog99 03:06, 14 December 2011 (UTC)

When I went up (don't remember my level), I encountered no bears, one ice troll and several ice wraiths. The article should probably be changed but I haven't traveled up enough to do it. Coronus 03:21, 22 December 2011 (UTC)

Real-life reference[edit]

The mountain itself seems to be based off of Tai Shan, a sacred mountain in China. Tai Shan also has 7000 stairs to the top and 10 shrines along the way. It is a place of pilgrimage as is High Hrothgar. Maybe worth looking into and adding to the page?71.194.252.170 17:00, 21 December 2011 (UTC)

Question[edit]

Are there Actually 7000 steps? — Unsigned comment by 184.166.78.129 (talk) at 04:25 on 17 January 2012

Not actually very high at all[edit]

getpos z ~= 11000 at Ivarstead, 23000 at High Hrothgar, 36000 at Paarthurnax. — Unsigned comment by Aliana (talkcontribs) at 00:30 on 24 January 2012

Odd glitch[edit]

I just fast-traveled here, and to my great surprise, waiting for me were half a dozen bandits (from White River Watch, I could tell by a note), a dozen draugr, a few corsairs and the first mate from the Dainty Sload, as well as 1 necromancer and a horse. Has anyone else had this happen to them? I assume that this sort of thing might also occur in other locations. Halfstache 05:36, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

Well I would guess that it's something to do with an unfinished quest. I know this sounds impossible, but try to finish as many journal quests that might be related to it (that you have in your journal as possible). It may also be a non- journal quest, so you have to do some searching to fix it. — Unsigned comment by 81.159.210.231 (talk) at 12:07 on 14 May 2012
Unlikely. As I mentioned here, this has become a recurring bug for me, and does not fix itself even as I clear out my journal multiple times. It has happened with to varying degrees, but it is always bandits, and is no longer specific to this one place. My only guess (and it is just that: a guess) would be that I used the COC command at some point while in combat, and the enemies are still after me. --HalfStache 18:26, 19 May 2012 (UTC)
Lets continue the thread on the glitches page, because it is not confined to one area. The Silencer has spokenTalk 18:37, 19 May 2012 (UTC)

Locked[edit]

If traveled to prior to completion of Dragon Rising, High Hrothgar is locked with no key available. I didn't check the back door, nor did I bother to unlock it with the console. Idle curiosity. 98.198.118.224 07:15, 24 April 2012 (UTC)

On a new playthrough, upon unlocking with the console, all that was offered was idle chatter with no input from the player. 98.198.118.224 20:33, 27 April 2012 (UTC)

Stub Classification[edit]

Okay, I'm trying to add some more info to the lore article, and a few others, but I was wondering how to remove the stub classification when I'm done? — Unsigned comment by 81.159.210.231 (talk) at 11:42 on 15 May 2012

At the bottom of the page, you'll find a {{Stub}} tag. Simply remove that. Robin Hoodtalk 01:03, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

Number of Steps to High Hrothgar[edit]

I was wondering if the article's reference to 7,000 steps should be changed. I counted the steps and if a "step" is considered to be a row of slabs on the same level then there are 734 steps (+ or - 10, 583 up and 151 down) on the way to High Hrothgar. If one counts individual slabs as steps then there are 2,021 (also + or - 10) steps on the way. The only way I did not count was counting the player's paces as steps (so it still might be 7,000 steps). Not that I blame Bethesda, the mountain is already huge relative to the rest of the world. Any bigger and there wouldn't be much area left to play on.Coronus 01:11, 31 January 2012 (UTC)

I have since counted the number of paces to High Hrothgar. Due to the variations in race height and in path choices this will vary from one journey to another but it is about 2,500 paces from the Vilemyr Inn, in Ivarstead to High Hrothgar. Coronus 21:37, 22 July 2012 (UTC)
From an engineer friend: A 'step' is counted as 1 tread and 1 riser. Separated steps of equal height still count as a single step. Sniffles (talk) 11:32, 19 October 2012 (GMT)

Low Hrothgar[edit]

The trail leading up the mountain is misleading. At it's lowest point on the south side of the mountain just off the trail, getpos z shows 19094. Just below that location is the summit of the road going past Haemar's Shame at getpos z of 16410. A no jump or zigzag climb up past the back entrance will leave you looking down on the trail from across the valley. — Unsigned comment by 118.172.147.58 (talk) at 09:10 on 21 April 2013 (GMT)

SUGGESTION[edit]

In the page layout. Add a blurb on the interior layout of High Hrothgar which would be placed next to the interior map. This would push the Etched Tablets section further down the page making the entire layout more uniform. Sniffles (talk) 09:32, 21 April 2013 (GMT)

Carving on Tower[edit]

I noticed that the tower at the front of High Hrothgar which has two staircases at its base has some sort of ornate carving about mid-way up, but I can't quite make out what it depicts. Does anyone know what this is? If it's interesting, can we get a shot of it for the page? Minor EditsThreatsEvidence 21:13, 28 June 2013 (GMT)

Map Moved[edit]

The map was moved to maintain consistency with all other locations. Kalevala (talk) 19:36, 1 July 2013 (GMT)

Emblem IX, misspelling of Dovahkiin[edit]

I was just making my way up High Hrothgar and when I checked Emblem IX, I noticed Donahkiin was no longer misspelled. Can anyone confirm? 98.143.51.43 06:38, 23 February 2014 (GMT)

It is still misspelled Dohvakiin (not the correct Dovahkiin) on my fully patched PC game with only official add-ons. —MortenOSlash (talk) 19:08, 23 February 2014 (GMT)

Compass[edit]

When you are outside facing the front door, the compass points East but when you enter it points North. How do you fix this in the CS? KaidaThyme (talk) 20:58, 27 October 2016 (UTC)

I'll check this in-game soon, and see if it's true. If this is true, it's most likely because the north marker is not facing in the correct direction, so rotating it would fix that issue. This may have been fixed in the Unofficial Skyrim Patch. Again, I'll check this later today. AlphaAbsol (talk) 21:22, 27 October 2016 (UTC)
I can't find the north marker. What does it look like and where would I find it in the object window? I don't have the USP but I do have DG, HF, and DB and a few inactive mods.KaidaThyme (talk) 14:54, 28 October 2016 (UTC)
It is possible the devs have forgotten to add a north marker to high hrothgar, so the game uses the editor orientation (which does in most cases not match the world orientation). The NorthMarker is found in the CK under Statics. It can be placed anywhere in the cell, but should be rotated to point north. -- SarthesArai Talk 15:02, 28 October 2016 (UTC)
Found the North marker and fixed the problem. Thank you both for your help.KaidaThyme (talk) 16:55, 28 October 2016 (UTC)
Added the confirmation of the bug to the page. —MortenOSlash (talk) 12:35, 1 January 2017 (UTC)

Tower in the Courtyard[edit]

I was looking for Arngeir all over the place. Detect Life proved that he wasn't in the building, and the courtyard was visually empty and without life signature as well. Although I heard someone shouting somewhere. And the other three were inside. Clairvoyance led me to the far side of the high tower (would be the South Eastern side, with access from just beneath the weather gate to Paarthurnax) where I found, for the first time ever, a door to another outside place (marked as "Skyrim"). Which was almost the at top of the tower where Arngeir knelt and practised shooing clouds away. I just hadn't looked up far enough to see his life signature with my spell. Should that tower with its doors be added to the place description? 109.43.112.184 11:36, 24 October 2021 (UTC)
