Enchant Chest Armor[edit]
I would like to point out that you can also enchant chest armor pieces as well with the fortify smithing enchant... — Unsigned comment by 71.49.193.134 (talk) at 18:05 on 6 December 2011
Fortify smithing broken?[edit]
I have gauntlets (+17%) and ring (+12%) which increase my smithing. When improving/creating armour/weapons there is no difference when comparing items smithed when wearing the enchantments to not wearing the enchantments. The armour/weapon has the same rating and cost with the enchantments as without.

- Smithing doesn't affect the quality of the items you create with the forge. When you are able to craft a certain item, you will always craft that item at its base quality. What (Fortified) Smithing does affect is how far you can improve an item using the Workbench or Grindstone. --Timenn-<talk> 11:49, 13 December 2011 (UTC)
- And despite the somewhat misleading description in game, Fortify Smithing does not directly affect any items you craft, it only does what its name implies, temporarily improve your Smithing Skill. (Current Smithing Lvl + Fortify Smithing Enchantments = New Smithing Lvl) Look at the "Item Quality" chart on the Smithing page. I'm betting that you don't have any Smithing perks and that your normal Smithing level is at the low end of either 'Superior' or 'Exquisite'. A 29% increase probably isn't enough to get you to the next quality level. Dragonsey 64.56.1.103 12:25, 13 December 2011 (UTC)
Fortify Smithing Formula[edit]
This has been marked as a question that needs to be answered. |
Does anyone know the math formula used in the Fortify Smithing effect?
Using the non-perk levels given in the "Item Quality" chart on the Smithing page, I've been trying to determine exactly how this enchantment works, when upgrading items to the different quality levels.
I had thought it was Current Smithing Lvl + Fortify Smithing Enchantments = Effective Smithing Lvl, but this doesn't hold up under testing.
Current Smithing Lvl + (Current Smithing Lvl*Fortify Smithing% Enchantment) = Effective Smithing Lvl comes close to the expected results when using only one enchanted item, but even here testing shows that it doesn't match perfectly. (I've only been seriously testing with one "Fortify Smithing" item worn for now. The few tests I've done wearing multiple "Fortify Smithing" items produce even odder results.) Dragonsey 64.56.1.103 02:57, 24 December 2011 (UTC)
- I would like to know this as well. I cannot test it right now, for the reason that I'm playing on a console, but from my observations in the past I can confirm that the formula above seems accurate when using one item. For multiple items I'ld say it has to be one of those:
- Base Level + (Base Level * Total Fortify Effect in %) = Modified Smithing Level
- Modified Level + (Modified Level* Additional Fortify Effect in %)=New Modified Smithing Level
- Base Level + (Modified Level* Additional Fortify Effect in %)=New Modified Smithing Level
- or
- Modified Level + (Base Level* Additional Fortify Effect in %)=New Modified Smithing Level
- Could someone please check if one of those is accurate? -- Lord Cluttermonkey --178.1.202.101 11:32, 28 December 2013 (GMT)
Can you fortify past 100?[edit]
I was thinking about trying to use enchantments and potions in order to increase my smithing to high levels then temper. Is this possible with smithing/enchanting/alchemy? — Unsigned comment by 130.63.191.124 (talk)
- Yes, this is possible. --Fluff 04:45, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
- Is it possible to reach 168 smithing points, which is required to improve any piece of armor to legendary, by wearing 4 armor parts enchanted with Fortify Smithing +25%? — Unsigned comment by 178.1.3.157 (talk) at 19:46 on 11 July 2013
- You could reach any smithing level you want by enchanted gear. But there is a limit on how powerful emchanted gear can get, obviously. Dragon Guard (talk) 19:55, 11 July 2013 (GMT)

Parenthesis[edit]
What are the numbers in parenthesis after the ingredient names meant to represent? Kastagir 19:01, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
- Nevermind, I figured it out. The number is the slot (of that particular ingredient) that the given effect appears (each ingredient has four possible effects). This needs to be better documented.Kastagir 19:06, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

Max Damage Cap[edit]
I was trying out the Fortify Restoration exploit the other day, and after about 5 iterations, I used my ~40 000%+ apparel to make Fortify Enchanting and Fortify Smithing potions. The enchanting potions were used to make Fortify Smithing clothing. With a total of ~40 000%+ smithing apparel and ~90 000%+ potions, I proceeded to refine my weapons and armor. The armor ratings shot up to 50k per piece, but the weapons went to about 100. In fact, I improved my weapons more BEFORE using the exploit, so can it be concluded that at some point, additional smithing skill increase actually DECREASES the improvement on weapons (note again that this didn't happen with the armour). — Unsigned comment by 207.6.237.62 (talk) at 23:57 on 30 March 2012
- The restoration exploit has a negative value when overcharged, thus making the other fortify skills decrease. I used the same technique twice and some heavily refined armour also decreased in rating. The Silencer has spoken 00:06, 31 March 2012 (UTC)

- I had come across this problem independently when using Skyrim Uncapper, and around smithing 800 or 850 you will start breaking into weapons with over 999 damage. It's not overflowing and decreasing improvement, it's simply not displaying the later digits. At ~800 I had 974 on a daedric sword, and I added 50 smithing with each round to test. I knew that every 50 smithing approximately equaled 50 more damage to the sword, and lo and behold, I got damages of 103, 108, 112, and 115 afterwards. I assume those damages are for 103X, 108X, 112X, and 115X instead. — Unsigned comment by 97.91.179.85 (talk) at 23:40 on 24 July 2013

New tip for improving your weapons/armors using the mother/father's love ability[edit]
I have found a new trick to improve the maximum fortify smithing potion you can make without glitches. I said "new" because even after extensive research on the web, I could not find a topic about it. We may discuss whether this new method is a glitch but still it is a very elegant approach which is worth being shared.
You will need:
-hearthfire installed
-at least 1 child adopted
-blisterwort (ingredient)
-any ingredient with fortify smithing effect except blisterwort (Glowing Mushroom, Sabre Cat Tooth or Spriggan Sap)
-any ingredient with restore health effect except blisterwort (Ash Hopper Jelly,Blue Dartwing, Blue Mountain Flower, Butterfly Wing, Charred Skeever Hide, Daedra Heart, Eye of Sabre Cat, Felsaad Tern Feathers, Imp Stool, Rock Warbler Egg, Swamp Fungal Pod or Wheat)
How To:
1) Craft a potion which has both effects restore health and smithing: mix the blisterwort with 1 fortify smithing ingredient and 1 restore health ingredient
2) Sleep in the house where your child lives to get the mother/father's love temporary ability (Healing spells and potions add 25% extra health for eight in-game hours)
3) Check in active effects that father's/mother's love is here
4) Drink the potion
5) craft your weapon/armor (+25% smithing bonus on top of what you had before using this trick)
Why does it work?
The potion you made had the restore health effect. When you have the mother/father's love ability, drinking that potion will increase its effect by 25%. As your potion has also a fortify smithing effect, this also benefits from the +25% bonus.
Can I do this trick with another alchemy effect?
Yes. But only if there exists an ingredient which has the restore health effect AND your desired effect. Unfortunately this does not include fortify enchanting. This includes: Cure Disease, Damage Health, Damage Magicka, Damage Magicka Regen, Damage Stamina, Damage Stamina Regen, Fear, Fortify Barter, Fortify Conjuration, Fortify Health, Fortify Light Armor, Fortify One-handed, Fortify Pickpocket, Fortify Smithing, Frenzy, Lingering Damage Health, Lingering Damage Magicka, Lingering Damage Stamina, Paralysis, Ravage Health, Resist Magic, Resist Poison, Resist Shock, Restore Stamina, Weakness to Frost, Weakness to Magic.
Hopefully it is useful. Maybe someone could create a page for mother/father's love. It is still undocumented.
--193.54.23.146 15:03, 28 March 2015 (GMT)
- If someone wants to try this, I suggest not using a combo of Spriggan Sap for the other Fortify Smithing reagent and Blue Mountain Flower for the other Restore Health reagent as these will combine to make a poison of Damage Magicka Regen. The properties of a mixture(potion or poison) are determined by the base gold value of the most valuable effect. Damage Magicka Regen has a base value of 265(second only to Paralysis at 285) while Fortify Smithing is only 82 and Restore Health is only 21. I would try this out with Sabre Cat Tooth(I save Glowing Mushroom and Spriggan Sap for more expensive mixtures) and one of Ash Hopper Jelly, Butterfly Wing or Rock Warbler Egg(I collect the first two as minor loot with good value to weight ratio and the eggs as fodder for Telekinesis Fast Travel leveling) but I guess my Lycanthropy prevents me from getting any kind of rested bonus, including Mother's Love or Father's Love.Jtenorj (talk) 16:21, 4 April 2017 (UTC)
Fortify Smithing broken for chest and arms[edit]
As soon as I get the enchantments for Fortify Alchemy and Fortify Smithing, I make a full set of gear to boost both. But today while getting ready to improve a Scimitar at the grindstone, I finally noticed that the enchantments on the chest and arm pieces aren't boosting my smithing. In fact, I tried every possible permutation of my Fortify Smithing gear, and I got higher damage when the chest and arm pieces weren't equipped. I didn't have a system-generated piece of body armor with the Fortify Smithing effect to test, but when I used a system-generated pair of gauntlets with the Fortify Smithing effect, I got the same result as with the gloves I had enchanted. The ring and necklace that I enchanted with Fortify Smithing did improve my weapon damage, so the problem isn't user enchantments rather than system-generated.
Then I tried all possible permutations of the four pieces of gear to improve a pair of Steel Nordic Gauntlets, and all my Fortify Smithing gear did indeed appear to be boosting the results. So it's broken, but only for weapon damage not armor rating.104.15.180.18 05:32, 8 October 2018 (UTC)
