Regular Vampire?[edit]
Do you need to be a Vampire Lord to enter the Soul Cairn without needing to be partially Soul-Trapped, or can you be a regular Vampire? If a regular Vampire is enough, you could become one long enough to enter the Soul Cairn for the quest, then cure yourself and enter normally afterwords. I'd test this myself, but I have to get a nap for work. If this hasn't been answered in about 13-14 hours, I'll test it out myself; in the meantime, if anyone can answer this, that would be appreciated. Swk3000 03:28, 4 July 2012 (UTC)
- Testing confirms that you only need to be a regular Vampire; you do not need to be a Vampire Lord. I've added a note to the page. Swk3000 16:55, 4 July 2012 (UTC)
- This seems a long way around. Wouldn't it be easier to just become a Vampire Lord and then cure yourself after? — Kimi the Elf (talk | contribs) 17:14, 4 July 2012 (UTC)
- As far as I'm aware, there's no way to cure yourself of being a Vampire Lord. At the very least, no mention of it has ever been made that I've seen. Does the Vampire Cure quest also cure you of being a Vampire Lord? Swk3000 00:11, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

- If you where previously a werewolf from being involved with the Companions, Aela should have a dialogue line that gives you the option of regaining your werewolf blood after you become a vampire lord. Consequences of becoming a Vampire Lord[edit]
I have scoured the Internet and have found nothing conclusive regarding the consequences of choosing to become a Vampire Lord, if performing this quest for the Dawnguard. Does choosing to become a Vampire Lord result in being kicked out of the Dawnguard, or does it only result in a one time dialogue with Isran in which you have to explain why you made the choice (Meaning that in effect you can be a vampire hunter and a vampire Lord)? 76.183.208.36 19:07, 7 July 2012 (UTC)
- The Dawnguard themselves will not initiate conversation with you, however members will note your vampirism, and much like an innkeeper, will suggest you see Falion in Morthal, thus starting the Rising at Dawn quest.--ProfessorRickshaw 16:09, 28 July 2012 (UTC)
Cannot Continue Quest[edit]
PC--When I meet Serana at the docks, she will refuse to take me further even if I have dismissed my follower(s). Nothing I say or do seems to make any difference. I can only guess my multiple follower mod interferes with it somehow. — Unsigned comment by 74.182.46.220 (talk) at 07:43 on 4 August 2012
This may be caused when a follower offers to become the Steward of a Hearthfire house. The follower will stop following you but the playerfollowercount may not decremented. Console: set playerfollowercount to 0 can bypass this issue.
Possible Alternate Fix[edit]
I encountered the issue wherein Serana would continue to tell me to put the items in the vessel. Then, after the fix, I was unable to get into the Cairn, even with the fix. I found that instead, after I put in the items, instead of using the given fix I changed the stage to 80, which made Serana add the blood, and then I was able to go into the Cairn. — Unsigned comment by 67.163.164.5 (talk) at 23:33 on 7 August 2012
- [[[[PORTAL FIX]]]]. I fixed this by gathering and putting each ingredient in the vessel Separately, one at a time.. GOOD LUCK

Confirmed on PC: two followers achieved[edit]
I was able to have both Serana and Lydia as followers, by following the directions in the website. I have not confirmed yet whether I can dismiss the other follower and get a new one, with Serana still tagging along (as is the case sometimes with the Dark Brotherhood Initiate).
This was also a good opportunity to unload all the stuff I was carrying, and load up for my trip to the Soul Cairn. In fact, I levelled up twice because I was crafting and enchanting some new gear for the trip. Apparently she's willing to wait for weeks there for you to add the ingredients in. — Unsigned comment by 151.151.109.18 (talk) at 17:17 on 20 August 2012
- I was able to aquire Mjoll and Serana and I tested the dismis I dismissed Mjoll and could hire her back immediately so that part is confirmed on pc as well. — Unsigned comment by 82.73.72.148 (talk) at 09:45 on 21 September 2012

- There is a possibility that your other follower will be dismissed when entering the Ancestors Glade, where Serana is forced to be your follower. This Wasn't an issue with one walkthrough, but happened in another. Advancing to the end of that quest will start Touching the Sky and let you keep your other follower. — Unsigned comment by 50.80.31.159 (talk) at 23:02 on 30 September 2012
Won't open portal to Soul Cairn[edit]
On PC. Had to force the quest stage to update to look for the ingredients because it never would allow me to continue forward, even with the journal. I place all three ingredients in, there's the dialogue with Serana, and then nothing. Cannot continue forward. Does Bethesda even bother with qos testing? 66.176.53.36 23:47, 20 September 2012 (GMT)

Any Xbox fixes?[edit]
I am unable to enter the Soul Cairn because Serana will not finish the dialog about the choices. My objective lists also shows me "Speak to Serana" twice. Ideas?-Zydrate[][] 04:06, 8 December 2012 (GMT)
- Disregard. A simple reload helped, though there was an odd graphical glitch (The reloading had the room illuminated like the Soul Cairn was opened, but it wasn't). -Zydrate[][] 04:11, 8 December 2012 (GMT)
Info regarding the Quest Stages chart is incorrect and needs changing[edit]
When stuck at the point where one has placed the 3 ingredients into the vessel, but talking to Serana to trigger her adding her own blood to the vessel does nothing, typing setstage dlc1vq04 75 (to progress to her performing the act of cutting her wrist and bleeding into the vessel thus triggering the portal to open) does nothing and you get the standard error message in console that it's a bad command or doesn't exist. However, instead typing setstage dlc1vq04 80 does indeed progress the quest and Serana does indeed begin and carry out the act of adding her blood to the vessel, thus opening the portal.
From my experience, when stuck at "Speak to Serana" immediately after placing the ingredients into the vessel, the only way to progress at that point is to use setstage dlc1vq04 80. Skipping 80 and going directly to any of the next stages (90, 95, 100 or 200) only serves to get one stuck on the next stage of the quest, and regardless one still will not be able to actually go through the portal (in my case at least). So apparently you can't skip a stage or you just get stuck on the next one. At least this is what happened to me.
BTW, I was already a Vampire Lord at this stage, so once I'd used setstage dlc1vq04 80 to get Serana to bleed herself into the vessel, I was able to just walk directly into the portal and the game loaded into the Oblivion plane and the next part of the quest.
Lastly... while experimenting with the setstage dlc1vq04 command and stages, I found that using 112 will prompt Serana to soul trap the character, thus that is a valid stage as well as stage 80. So to conclude, the stage after stage 70 is in fact stage 80 and there is no stage 75. Also, the notes at the bottom of the chart states that 80 and 112 do nothing and were removed. That's wrong on those accounts and the chart and the notes need to be fixed on the walkthrough page. Sorry so lengthy here but I want to be clear. Hope this helps folks in the future like it helped me. ````— Unsigned comment by 98.204.71.199 (talk) at 23:09 on 10 February 2013
- Stage 75 definitely exists,
setstage dlc1vq04 75
does not produce an error for me. Almost every quest stage does something, the table omits them only because they don't contain a quest journal entry or assigned objective. Now to answer the question what stages to set to solve problems, one would really need to look at the script sources in the CK (or experiment). --Alfwyn (talk) 14:22, 11 February 2013 (GMT)
Serana glitch...?[edit]
When I enter the lab in Chasing Shadows, Serana stops all of a sudden and cannot be engaged in dialogue as it comes up with "This person is busy"... Can anyone help??? — Unsigned comment by Lost Celt (talk • contribs) at 06:32 on 23 May 2013 (GMT)
Attacked by Serana[edit]
Every time I go into the ruined tower with Serana, she attacks me if I try talking to her. Has anyone else had this problem?

Serana not opening portal[edit]
Xbox version... Serana is at the goblet after I added the three ingrediance. The quest line is stuck on "speak to Serana" and she is biting her wrist over and over without opening the portal. Any suggestions or known fix actions?
This is why I have still refused to play ESO Online... If they cannot patch up and fix/improve games like this, why would I pay more to continue getting frustrated!? — Unsigned comment by 68.98.47.100 (talk) at 18:46 on 6 July 2014 (GMT)
I need help asap[edit]
for me Serena will not even bit her wrist she just keeps repeating put the ingredients in that vesslr and let me know when your ready and ive already put them in ive tried going to last save waiting 24 hours every thing and im getting frustrated can any one help???? — Unsigned comment by 23.126.60.182 (talk) at 07:14 on 19 April 2015 (GMT)
- I struggle a bit to understand exactly what you are asking, but do I understand correctly that you have gathered Finely Ground Bone Meal, Soul Gem Shards and Purified Void Salts in the vessel in front of the portal, and Serana still does not offer the dialogue she is supposed to? What platform are you playing? Do you have any mods of unofficial patches installed?
- By the way, these talk pages are not game help as such, but rather for discussing what is to be put on the article, so it is quite possible that the only you get from your question here is a couple of line in the bug section that there is a bug. The forums might be just as good place to ask for this kind of urgent help. —MortenOSlash (talk) 09:47, 19 April 2015 (GMT)
Became a vampire when soul drain option was chosen[edit]
This is something that has never happened on my many playthroughs, becoming a vampire when the other option was chosen. This glitch will usually kick in after starting the game. I even had the dialogue from Valerica on changing to a vampire. The problem is in trying to cure it. I will think it is gone because after loading a previous save and taking a cure disease potion, it doesn't show in active effects.
I even tried becoming a werewolf through the Silver Hand quest, which didn't work. Odder still is that I'm a wood elf and should have some immunity. I guess my only other option will be to get the cure, which will be difficult because I don't get the prompts from the Dawnguard or innkeepers. --Whoman69 (talk) 01:14, 12 August 2022 (UTC)
