Quick Walkthrough[edit]

  1. Convince the Jarl of Markarth to allow the East Empire Company to operate within their hold

Detailed Walkthrough[edit]

After getting sent to Markarth, you will need to speak to Igmund or Thongvor Silver-Blood to open up Markarth to the East Empire Company. You can either use your position as Thane, persuade them, or bribe them with gold. If you have the Warmaster perk you can convince Igmund. Similarly, you can convince Thongvor with Master Trader.

If you have already visited Markarth, going to one of the East Empire trading camps to read the ledger will give you the note Convincing Igmund or Convincing Thongvor, both of which will direct you to search Understone Keep for clues. If Igmund is Jarl, two notes can be found: Jarl Igmund's Note and Love Letter to Jarl Igmund. If Thongvor is Jarl, one note can be found: Note to Jarl Thongvor.

Reading Jarl Igmund's Note will reveal that an Ancient Sword of Legend can be found in Dead Crone Rock and that Igmund wishes to have it. The relic is placed on the table right in front of the entrance door. Offering this sword as a gift will convince Igmund of giving his blessing to the EEC.

If the player has the Love Letter to Jarl Igmund or the Note to Jarl Thongvor, they can attempt to coerce the concerned Jarl, though those are Very Hard Speech checks, just like the Persuade option.

Quest Stages[edit]

Stage Finishes Quest Journal Entry
1 Convince the Jarl in Markarth to allow the East Empire Company to operate within their hold
250 Finishes quest☑
  • The following empty quest stages were omitted from the table: 0, 10, 20.
Notes
  • Any text displayed in angle brackets (e.g., <Alias=LocationHold>) is dynamically set by the Radiant Quest system, and will be filled in with the appropriate word(s) when seen in game.
  • Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
  • Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
  • If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
  • On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering setstage kgcEEC_ConvinceRuler_TheReach_Markarth stage, where stage is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages, but it is possible to clear all stages of the quest using resetquest kgcEEC_ConvinceRuler_TheReach_Markarth.
