Old Trinket

Old Trinket is an enigmatic old-timer who pops up several times during the game.

He is first encountered in Azra's Crossing, complaining about his lumbago, and telling you that he saw some rats dragging a chest towards Delfran's Hideout, and in the hideout itself a bandit will remark that "Old Trinket warned us that as sure as rain is wet, you would be trouble".

He next turns up in jail in Dragonstar East. Tanyin Aldwyr insists that you free him and tells you that he "only seems worthless".

His last appearance is outside Crypt of Hearts I where he will offer to train you in the arts of defensive combat. He can increase your Defense attribute by two.

Quest-Related Events[edit]

Rat Quest[edit]

If spoken to before accepting Rat Quest:

"Oh, hello. I was just catching my breath before returning to fight them rats."
Sure...

If spoken to after accepting Rat Quest:

"A bunch of them rats are milling around across the bridge. I'd help..."
No need.
"But me lumbago makes it hard to swing a sword like I used to do."
I'm on it.
"Yessir, back in my days in Dragonstar I coulda taken twenty of them rodents..."
Enough already!

Rescue Prisoners[edit]

When spoken to:

"Awhile ago I saw rats dragging a chest toward Delfran's."
Really? Thanks!

Tanyin Prisoner Free[edit]

If this quest is not active:

"Don't I know you from somewhere?"
Perhaps... perhaps not.

If the quest is active:

(A dejected old man behind the bars recognizes you, and his face lights up.)
"Hello, I remember you from Azra's Crossing! It's me, Trinket."
Eh... hello, Trinket.
"Tanyin send you for me? I surely appreciate the rescue."
Yes, just keep it down.
(You bend down and start working on the lock.)
"Oh... they ignore me back here. I think they are afraid of me."
(*Trinket begins pounding on the cell door*)
"Guard! Guard! I want something to drink! I will even take water."
Ignore Trinket.
Are you insane?
"No, I am just covering up the unholy racket you're making while picking that lock!
You youngsters, all flash and no technique. It's a wonder anything gets stolen these days.
Success! Thank you, young hero. I promise, once my lumbago clears up, I will pay you back. I owe you one."
I won't hold my breath./I appreciate any help, Trinket.
(Conversation ends)

Dialogue[edit]

Outside the Crypt of Hearts:

"So you are going in, are you? I might be able to help a little. I scouted a bit inside."
Help is good.
"The crypt's caretakers have been slaughtered, although I thought I heard one to two scurrying about, trying to stay alive.
The thing you are looking for is deeper down than the level I scouted, although there is plenty to do before you can safely walk the first level.
Would you like me to show you a trick or two before you head out? Might keep you breathing a little longer."
Sure.
(Old Trinket teaches how to increase your awareness of your opponent's actions, never once slowing down his chatter during the lessons.)
"I knew you were trouble, the right kind of trouble, before you killed your first rat. You had that look. I had it once."
(You torso-twist just in time to avoid a blow; Old Trinket nods approvingly.)
"I was already yesterday's hero when I arrived in Azra's Crossing."
(Trinket's sudden leg whip drops you to the ground.)
"And you are tomorrow's hero just waiting to step into legend.
The problem is today. We cannot wait until tomorrow.
Want to keep going?"
That's enough, thank you.
I can go another round.
(Trinket's flurry of punches makes you regret your hasty decision to go another round, but you quickly learn to counter a variety of his moves.)
"Anyway, Pergan Asuul and his bunch are definitely laying in the weeds for you. But the way I see it..."
(You deftly dodge Trinket's combination; he grins)
"There are no weeds tall enough to hide them from you."
(Old Trinket nods to you)
"Go get 'em"
Thanks, I'm on my way.
No thanks.

Once the Umbra' Keth has been killed:

"Hah! I knew you had it in you."
Had what?
"Oh, stop being so modest. It isn't very becoming. I knew it from the moment we met... I could see it in your eyes. You had the heart of a hero. Apparently I wasn't wrong."
And what about you?
"What about me? There's nothing to tell."
Now you're being modest.
"Perhaps. Maybe one day I'll tell you, but, for now let's just celebrate your success. Today, you are the hero. Enjoy it."
Thanks, Trinket.
