Quest-Related Events[edit]

Before the related quest:

"This is a private matter. I must tend to my son."

After defeating Urgkail the Cleaver, Laurig will boast to the clan mother:

Laurig: "Yazara, look! I cut this off Urgkail the Cleaver. My friend here struck the killing blow."
Yazara: "Impressive, Laurig. Why don't you show the others?"
Laurig: "Sound advice, as always."

She'll then turn to you:

Yazara: "Come closer. We should speak."
"You avenged my son. I will not forget what you did for Shatul today. Nor will the clan.
If you are willing, I have need of someone so capable."
I'm listening.
"If Shatul is to survive, there must be a new chief. Laurig is one contender.
The other is Ulghesh. I want you to meet him."
Why?
"Ulghesh returned from Orsinium shortly after my son's injury. He declared himself a contender, but I'm not sure why.
The boy never had brains or ambition. Serving in the Orsinium Guard was my son's suggestion."
Why does that matter?
"Shatul needs a chief who looks out for the clan before himself. We have no walls to hide behind—only our wits and our skill herding echatere.
If Ulghesh has neither, I need to know."
All right. Where is Ulghesh?
"I sent him after Scamper, our laziest echatere. Ulghesh can explain the task.
He's never been talkative, but see what you can learn as you aid each other. I'll want to speak with you when you return."
"Ulghesh won't be far from Shatul. Unless he's truly witless."

Gather snow truffles with Ulghesh and return to her:

"Did you find Ulghesh?"
Yes. He asked me to bring you this snow truffle.
"Good. Give it here.
Ulghesh passed my test. Scamper has always required two people to wrangle. For Ulghesh to send you back with the snow truffle tells me he learned to master his temper."
Makes sense. What now?
Wait. What if Ulghesh had lost his temper?
"He'd have tried to kill you.
But you slew Urgkail the Cleaver. I expect Ulghesh would now be dead."
I see. What now?

Either option leads here:

"Laurig and Ulghesh are the only clear contenders for chief. They must enter the Bloody Knoll and duel beneath the stern gaze of Malacath.
The one who emerges shall be the new chief of Shatul."
I see. It sounds like Shatul's troubles will soon be over.
Wait. I slew Urgkail the Cleaver and brought you the snow truffle. I could be a contender.
"Only an Orc can become chief of Shatul. Or of any Orc clan. It's … I can't say it any simpler than that."
All right. Never mind.

If you are a male Orc:

I slew Urgkail the Cleaver and brought you the snow truffle. I could be a contender.
"You? But ... hmm."
"It's not a possibility. The clan will never accept an outsider unless there is no better option."
All right. Never mind.

If you are a female Orc:

I slew Urgkail the Cleaver and brought you the snow truffle. I could be a contender.
"You? But ... no Orc woman has ever led Shatul. Or any Orc clan."
"There's no possibility. Such a radical idea would drive the clan apart."
All right. Never mind.

Again, either option leads here:

"I have not forgotten what you did for us. On behalf of Shatul, I name you blood-kin. You shall always have a place among us.
I already sent Laurig to the Bloody Knoll. Could you inform Ulghesh he is to fight? I would do so, but I must attend to my son."
I'll inform Ulghesh.
"Ulghesh should be at his tent.
And thank you for the snow truffle, blood-kin. Sometimes the smallest favors are hardest to repay."
Why did you need the snow truffle?
"It was my son's favorite food. His hearth-wife—she has dozens of recipes. He loved them all.
He won't be able to taste it. His mind, you see … there's nothing left of him. But I'll mix it into the poison so he enjoys it one last time."
Poison? What poison?
"The poison I shall feed the husk that remains of his body."
That's horrible!
"Yes. Yes, it is."
It's a mercy.
"No. It is me. Murdering my own son."

Both options lead to…

Then why do it?
"Shatul must survive.
Before a new chief is chosen, the old chief must die. By the time Laurig and Ulghesh reach the Bloody Knoll, the poison will finish its work. Malacath will take no offense."
I don't understand.
If you are not an Orc:
"There is no shame in that. You are not an Orc. You are not of Shatul.
But you are blood-kin to our clan. Know that it must be done, and that only I can carry this burden. Shatul must survive."
If you are an Orc:
"An Orc should understand. Malacath walks in your shadow and burns in your blood. Survival is what our people must understand.
But you are blood-kin to our clan. This unpleasant task falls to me, and only to me. Shatul must survive."
I understand.
If you are not an Orc:
"I doubt that. An Orc of Shatul would truly understand. You are neither.
Yet you are blood-kin to our clan, and your words give me the strength to do what must be done. Shatul must survive."
If you are an Orc:
"Do you, truly? Were you a stronghold Orc, raised behind thick walls? Can you understand why I alone must carry this burden?"
"Forgive me. You are blood-kin to our clan. The only thing you must understand is that Shatul must survive."

After speaking to Ulghesh (or rather, Ushruka), find her in her tent:

"My son …. Chief Ogzor is dead.
Laurig waits at the Bloody Knoll. Is Ulghesh on his way?"
Actually, Ushruka is heading to the Bloody Knoll.
"What? Ushruka was exiled from Shatul. I would never allow her to contend for chief!"
That's why she posed as Ulghesh.
"She ….
That foolish girl! We're a traditional clan. Shatul will never accept an exiled woman as chief!"
Why not? Ushruka would make a good chief.
"Had she become Laurig's hunt-wife as my son wanted, Shatul would have stayed for the wedding. We would have been there when the Reach attacked Laurig's clan.
Her selfishness led to their destruction!"
I see. What about Laurig?
"A chief who lost his entire clan to raiders from the Reach? He refused to challenge my son—to give him an honorable death under Malacath's gaze—because of 'friendship.'
No matter his prowess in battle, he is soft in the heart."
There are no other contenders in your clan.
"Take this ritual blade. It is flawed at its core, just like Laurig and Ushruka. Replace the blade of the weakest contender."
I can do that.
"When the blade fails, the weakest contender will most assuredly die. If they … if she ….
Go, there is little time. Malacath favor the victor."
I can't do that. It's not fair.
"Fair? I just watched my son die. None of this is fair!
The flawed blade is a test. A weak contender who survives despite this setback deserves to become chief of Shatul."
Do you really believe that will happen?
"When the blade fails, the weakest contender will most assuredly die. If they … if she ….
Go, there is little time. Malacath favor the victor."
If you are a male Orc:
There's another option. I could become chief of Shatul.
"You? Well ... you are the first Shatul blood-kin since Laurig. And you did avenge my son.
You, an exile, or a weakling ... yes, the choice is obvious. I can make this work."
What would I need to do?
"Replace the blade of the weakest, as I said. When the victor leaves the dueling chamber, enter the sacred shrine and kill him. Or her.
If you go through with this ... Ushruka deserves a clean death. Malacath favor the victor."
If you are a female Orc:
There's another option. I could become chief of Shatul.
"The clan would never accept an Orc woman as chief ... unless she was highly regarded by the clan. Which you are, for avenging my son.
And if the choice is between you, an exile, or a weakling ... yes. This could work."
What would I need to do?
"Replace the blade of the weakest, as I said. When the victor leaves the dueling chamber, enter the sacred shrine and kill him. Or her.
If you go through with this ... Ushruka deserves a clean death. Malacath favor the victor."
Agreed. Laurig would make a better chief.
"A chief who lost his entire clan to raiders from the Reach? He refused to challenge my son—to give him an honorable death under Malacath's gaze—because of 'friendship.'
No matter his prowess in battle, he is soft in the heart."
If not Laurig, then Ushruka must become chief.
"Had she become Laurig's hunt-wife as my son wanted, Shatul would have stayed for the wedding. We would have been there when the Reach attacked Laurig's clan.
Her selfishness led to their destruction!"
There are no other contenders in your clan.
<Repeats from above>
[Lie] Yes. "Ulghesh" is on his way.
"Good, good. Although, there is a problem. Neither contender is good for Shatul.
Laurig has weakness in his heart. Ulghesh is weak of mind. Something must be done."
Like what?
"You spent time with both contenders. Perhaps you see a strength in one that I do not.
I must prepare the clan for its new chief. As I do so, I ask that you help Shatul survive."
How would I do that?
"There is a separate entrance to the Bloody Knoll, away from the sacred chambers. I want you to go there and fix the duel before it starts."
All right, I can do that.
"Take this ritual blade. It has a subtle flaw at its core, just like Laurig and Ulghesh. Replace the blade of the contender you judge to be weakest.
If the blade fails, yet the contender bests his opponent, he proves himself worthy of leading Shatul."
And if not?
"Then he dies.
Go, quickly. You must reach the Bloody Knoll before Laurig and Ulghesh reach the dueling chamber."
I'll head there now.
Wait. Ushruka is heading to the Bloody Knoll, not Ulghesh.
<This dialogue is the same as if you had told Yazara that Ushruka was Ulghesh from the beginning, see above>

Speak to her before leaving and she'll say:

"The Bloody Knoll is a sacred place. Any Orc from Shatul who spots you inside is honor-bound to kill you.
I trust you grasp the implications."

Return from The Bloody Knoll:

"You've returned. Who is the new chief of Shatul?"

Laurig wins[edit]

Laurig was victorious.
"I see. Our clan will believe Malacath favors the loyalty Laurig showed my son. They'll accept his victory … for now.
I shall advise him, if he allows it. And I will watch for weakness in his heart. Shatul must survive."

Laurig approaches:

Yazara: "You alone emerge from the Bloody Knoll. Did you pray to Malacath for your victory?"
Laurig: "I needed no prayers. Only my strength."
Yazara: "Then go forth, my chief, and receive your clan."
Yazara: "Shatul, I present your new chief!"
Laurig: "Chief Ogzor was good for Shatul. Though Ushruka fell by my hand in the Bloody Knoll, I vow to lead by her father's example!"

Speak to her and she'll say:

"Laurig will not lose another clan.
I won't allow it."

Ushruka wins[edit]

Ushruka was victorious.
"I see. I convinced our clan that Ushruka's victory would test our faith in Malacath's favor. They'll accept her … for now.
If she allows it, I shall advise her. She'll need all the help she can get."

Ushruka approaches:

Yazara: "You alone emerge from the Bloody Knoll. Did you pray to Malacath for your victory?"
Ushruka: "I needed no prayers. Only my strength."
Yazara: "Then go forth, my chief, and receive your clan."
Yazara: "Shatul, I present your new chief!"
Ushruka: "Know this, my clan! A new era begins today—the era of the Orc! At King Kurog's side, we shall lead Tamriel to greatness!"

Speak to her and she'll say:

"Perhaps Ushruka is right about the changes in Orsinium. Time will tell whether she is an exception, or the first of many."

You defeated the victor[edit]

I won. Isn't that enough?
"You're supposed to say, "I needed no prayers. Only my strength." Go on, so they can hear you."
"I needed no prayers. Only my strength."
"Then go forth and receive your clan."
"Shatul, I present your new chief!"
That was it?
"We do not mince words here. You are the chief of Shatul."
"Go, receive your clan."
"You alone emerge from the Bloody Knoll. Did you pray to Malacath for your victory?"
Yazara: "Shatul, I present your new chief!"

Speak to her and she'll say:

"Interesting times ahead. Represent us well to the king, my chief. Never forget your responsibility to your clan."
