Quest-Related Events[edit]
Before the quest starts:
- "A new person in Wretched Spire. Seems we grow all the time. Who knew a town in the Deadlands could attract so many people?"
Noroth will suggest you speak to Tarvyn concerning the murder of Tephilaz. You can find him up the hill from the crime scene:
- "Greetings, stranger. Is this about Tephilaz's death? Or, I suppose, not death. The Daedra tell me that is not really how it works with them. I imagine he will come back eventually.
Do you know Noroth? The two of you spoke for some time, I saw." - Noroth asked me to check for any mortal witnesses of Tephilaz's death.
- "Again, not death. Displacement? The proper word for their unique situation eludes me.
To answer your inquiry, no I did not see what occurred. I was actually headed into the Daedric district to meet with Tephilaz when I stumbled on the scene." - Why were you meeting with Tephilaz?
- "Tephilaz and I are friendly. As much as any Dremora has friends. I helped him gain the trust of the city council to begin treaty discussions.
He just met with my father, Faven, leader of the council. I wanted to know how the negotiations went."
After you spoke to him and Ruldzara:
- "With Tephilaz sent to Oblivion for a while, I feel uncertain about who can continue the treaty negotiations.
It took a while for my father to trust the Dremora. Without him, the council could get pressured to purge all the Daedra."
Enter the Spire Hall and you'll hear a discussion:
- Noroth: "Do not pursue this, Faven. It will fail."
- Faven Indoril: "Daedra don't belong here. This was once sacred ground!"
- Tarvyn Indoril: "Father, please just hear Noroth out."
Speak to him before speaking to Noroth and he'll say:
- "My father can be quite unreasonable, as you can plainly see. I suggest you talk to Noroth while I try to sort this out."
After speaking to Noroth:
- "My father will speak with you, but don't expect him to cooperate. He can be quite stuck in his ways."
And after speaking with Faven:
- "Vontan? Never heard of anyone by that name. I hope my father isn't sending you on a fool's errand.
Just be careful in the Fleapits. It's not the most hospitable part of Wretched Spire."
Through your investigations with Noroth, you eventually find yourself in the Waking Flame camp just outside of the Wretched Spire. There you find a Letter to Vibius Sosia followed by voices up ahead:
- Tarvyn Indoril: "I did what I must! My own father! Because I believed your lies."
- Disastrix Vibius: "Stupid child. Lock him up! We march on the Spire soon enough."
Tarvyn will take out his captors and flee:
- Waking Flame Cultist: "He broke free! Grab him!"
Follow the voices and Tarvyn will run from you:
- Tarvyn Indoril: "You! I … I'm sorry! Leave me alone! I did what I thought was right!"
Follow him and several townspeople will guide you to an overlook south of town. There you will have Tarvyn cornered:
- Tarvyn Indoril: "Don't you understand? I was helping them! The Daedra deserve a home!"
Speaking to him:
- "So, you figured it out. You know I killed them. Tephilaz, Vontan … even my father.
But you don't understand! How could you? The Daedra deserve their freedom! They're beings with souls, just like you and I. We should protect them. Welcome them!" - Then why work with the Waking Flame cultists? Why kill those people?
- "I always fought for the Daedra. They just want a home. They belong here as much as we do.
That group—they said they would help. Mortals on the side of Daedra. They said that if I poisoned Tephilaz, it would spur the Daedra to action." - And you believed that?
- "Tephilaz will be back! But then you showed up. I had to kill Vontan to protect myself. And my father wrote that decree. It would have been a war. The mortals, we would have all died! I couldn't let that happen. I didn't want to kill him but I had to!"
- You need to return to Wretched Spire with me and take responsibility for your actions.
- "I … I know. I've done horrible things. How do I even begin to atone?
But I'll go. No more running." - All right, let's go.
Speaking to him before Noroth:
- "I'll go with you. Admit everything. Just leave me be."
After completing the quest, Tarvyn will consider his position:
- "Tell Noroth I'll face whatever punishment the town devises. It will give the Daedra and the mortals something to work out. Together. Maybe in that way, something good can come out of all this.
I really was just trying to help."
