Quest-Related Events[edit]
At Thoryn Armas's request, you will enter Kemel-Ze to deal with the Painted Eye who are invading and to find the Apostle Nilphas Drethan. You can first encounter Nilphas in a chamber close to the entrance where he is looking over a damaged Factotum:
- Nilphas Drethan: "Poor Factotum. A few missing components and you cease to function."
- <Nilphas notices you.>
- Nilphas Drethan: "A creature of flesh, but without the sign of the painted? Come here."
Speak with Niphas to see what is going on:

- You dealt with the Painted Eye already?
- "Currently dealing with. I'm activating the Dwarven constructs. They're highly effective at frightening off any hostiles who come here. Really, this is standard procedure. I'm not even sure what that dithering fool was worried about."
- Why would they make all this effort and then get scared away?
- "Have you faced animunculi?
Whatever the Painted Eye are after, I doubt it's valuable enough to drive them to such bravery. Not when murderous Dwarven machines spring from every wall." - You mean you don't know why the Painted Eye are here?
- "How could you possibly think I'd know something like that?
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have sacred items to collect. Best not let any Painted Eye stragglers find Lord Seht's world-altering projects. Give my regards to Thoryn." - All right, if you're sure you can take care of it. (Ends Conversation)
- Wait, I have some questions.
- "I truly do not have the time for this.
Fine. If it means you're less likely to poke your nose in matters where it doesn't belong, then I'll listen to your queries." - Thoryn said you're a Clockwork Apostle.
- "I didn't replace my flesh out of curiosity.
If you're wondering what one of Seht's most devoted followers is doing here, I came to study his greatest machine and keep it protected. Which is what you're keeping me from." - You did that to your arms on purpose?
- "Flesh is flawed. Why else would Seht create a world of mechanical permanence?
In the Clockwork City, my arms allowed me to access more research and study more mechanisms than you'll ever encounter."
- "Flesh is flawed. Why else would Seht create a world of mechanical permanence?
- "I didn't replace my flesh out of curiosity.
- What is a Factotum?
- "That mechanism there. They were built to maintain the Clockwork City. Usually they stick to singular tasks—sweeping, maintenance, that sort of thing.
This one is a prototype. One of the earlier models, which explains its poor condition." - What's wrong with it?
- "It's broken.
If I had to guess, the damage occurred during the Painted Eye's attack."
- "It's broken.
- "That mechanism there. They were built to maintain the Clockwork City. Usually they stick to singular tasks—sweeping, maintenance, that sort of thing.
- What is the Clockwork City? (Appears after asking one of the above questions)
- "A world set apart from our own. Seht–Sotha Sil, whatever name you call him by—created it. It's a place of machines where everything runs routinely and very little changes.
I'd be surprised if you ever laid eyes on it." - I've been to the Clockwork City and saved Sotha Sil.
- "Then why did you ask me what it was?
You've wasted my time when Seht's greatest works could be under siege."
- "Then why did you ask me what it was?
- "A world set apart from our own. Seht–Sotha Sil, whatever name you call him by—created it. It's a place of machines where everything runs routinely and very little changes.
- I don't have any other questions. (Ends Conversation)
- "I truly do not have the time for this.
Once you have finished speaking with him, Niphas will leave to deal with the rest of the Painted Eye:
- <Nilphas runs towards the doors and locks them as he goes through.>
- Nilphas Drethan: "I'm locking this door behind me. You can see yourself out."
- <The nearby factotum begins to move and speak.>
- Protus: "Alert. Deception. Danger. Repair Construct. Stop the betrayer."
Speaking with Protus, you quickly learn that Nilphas is a traitor but to find out what he means to do, Protus will need to regain full functionality. You assist Protus by assisting with repairs and reactivating them. Once repaired, Protus searches for Nilphas and realises he is working with the Painted Eye to gain access to the Clockwork Probabilis. If used, the prototype could cause untold destruction as it can be used to manipulate the intrinsic forces of reality.
As you enter the through the previously locked door, you will spot Nilphas watching you from above:
- Nilphas Drethan: "Protus, you're active?"
- <Nilphas leaves the balcony.>
- Protus: "Halt Apostle. You won't reach the Probabilis."
Further along the passage to the inner laboratory:
- Nilphas Drethan: "I will activate the Probabilis. It's what Seht wanted."
- Protus: "Your hypothesis is incorrect. This will only result in catastrophic failure."
The third time you see Nilphas, he will announce he has activated the Probabilis:
- Nilphas Drethan: "You're too late. The Clockwork Probabilis is mine to control."
- Protus: "We must stop him. Before his actions cause irreparable damage."

You then chase Nilphas to the Inner Laboratory, you will find it is a vast room, with one wall being replaced with a window showing you are below the sea. At the far end of the room, Nilphas can be found at the controls of the machine.
As you engage Nilphas in battle, he will call out:
- Nilphas Drethan: "The Probabilis is active. You think you can stop me now?"
During the fight:
- Nilphas Drethan: "The likes of you won't stop me!"
- Nilphas Drethan: "I am the master of the Probabilis. Stop this attack!"
- Nilphas Drethan: "Why won't you let me fix what he couldn't?"
When Nilphas is slain:
- Nilphas Drethan: "What have you done? I was going to—"
