When the Ground Shook[edit]

If you have started the quest Paths of Chaos from Leramil the Wise, Ostumir will be one of the locations she asks you to investigate. The town was right in the middle of where the Dawnwood grew into being a few months prior. Soon after people started moving back there was a series of earthquakes that caused additional damage and casualties.

When you meet Beragon, he says he was visiting Ostumir because Greenspeaker Sorilen had contacted him and said she found something important in the ruins. He will ask that you keep an eye out for her as you assist him with finding and rescuing survivors. Soon you will come across Greenspeaker Sorilen who is healing Dominis Luria:

Greenspeaker Sorilen: "You're safe now. Go join your family."
<Beragon runs up to her.>
Beragon: "You're alive!"
Greenspeaker Sorilen: "Beragon! Oh, who's your friend?"

Talking to Sorilen, you can explain why you are with Beragon and ask about her discovery:

"I had no idea the ground would shake so violently when I asked Beragon to meet me here. Nature is nothing if not unpredictable.
I also didn't expect him to bring a guest. So, who are you, friend of Beragon?"
Just someone who happened by and decided to help him rescue survivors. Why did you invite him here?
"Helping people in dangerous situations sounds just like Beragon. Can't fault him for accepting help.
I asked him to join me in Ostumir because I found something amazing. Miraculous, even. He needs to see it for himself."
That sounds intriguing. What did you find?
"No, no. The only way Beragon can understand this discovery is by experiencing it himself.
How about we all see it together? It's down in the Ayleid ruins nearby. I'll show you both. It truly is remarkable."
All right, let's enter the Ayleid ruins.
"Beragon's an old friend. He'll appreciate my discovery. I hope you do, as well.
The ruins are to the southeast of the village. Meet me outside the entrance when you finish helping survivors. I can't wait for Beragon to see what I found."

You can ask her some questions before you continue:

Why did you come to Ostumir?
"In addition to being a greenspeaker, I study Ayleids and the history of the Wild Elves for the University of Gwylim. The nearby ruins called out to me the moment I noticed them. And what I discovered … no, no, you really must see it."
You seem particularly interested in the Ayleids.
Wood Elf Character:
Otherwise:
"And you should be, too! The legacy of the ancient Ayleids flows in our blood! You and I, all of the Bosmer—we're the inheritors of this great legacy.
Some find this notion controversial, but my research reveals the truth."
"Why wouldn't I be? All Bosmer can trace their lineage directly to the ancient Ayleids. Well, almost all.
This history surprises many people and can be controversial. But my research definitely shows that we're the inheritors of that legacy."
Why would this be controversial?
"A disgusting bigotry toward Bosmer pervades scholars from other cultures. To them, we're not worthy of such a noble ancestry. But plainly, they're wrong.
You should read my book. It contains all the evidence needed to persuade any doubter."
Tell me about greenspeakers.
"Greenspeakers are a vital part of any Bosmer community and I cherish my role. Shaping the Green is an art. It involves merging my voice with the song of nature and guiding how things grow.
We don't control nature. Instead, we have a conversation."
Beragon explained that this forest growth happened recently. Is it the result of greenspeaking?
"Did Beragon tell you that? No, ordinary greenspeaking can't manipulate something as large as this new forest, and certainly not as fast as it appeared. Beyond that, I'd rather not speculate. It goes against my training as a researcher."
And how do you know Beragon?
"We grew up together. He started on a path of a warrior and hunter, while I trained as a greenspeaker. He had an interest in scholarly pursuits as well, and we bonded over shared studies.
He became a good friend."

Once you reach the entrance to the ruins to the southeast, you will find the body of Rodrolrin and a letter Orders for Immediate Retrieval. The note mentions something called a "wildburn seed" the claim that something like it was the origin of Dawnwood. Sorilen will have left a note on the letter, asking you to meet her inside Essondul.

While you are exploring Essondul, you will find signs that the Recollection are there, and you will soon catch up to Greenspeaker Sorilen as she examines the ruins:

Beragon: "Sorilen's up ahead. What's she looking at?"
Greenspeaker Sorilen: "Do you feel it, Beragon? The grandeur of our history?"
Beragon: "You're right. These ruins are incredible!"

Talk with Greenspeaker Sorilen and ask her again about her disovery:

"Do you feel it? The power of the Ayleids pervades this place. Millennia separate us from the Heartland High Elves, but I can feel their legacy flowing through my blood.
It pains me to see their glory buried in these ruins."
What did you bring us down here to show us, greenspeaker?
"This was all for Beragon's benefit. You're just an unintended spectator. I brought Beragon here to remind him of his Ayleid heritage.
The Recollection remembers their past. This land belonged to the Ayleids, and we Bosmer are their rightful heirs."
Sounds like you admire the Recollection.
"Not at all. But some of their beliefs match my own. All that aside, I wanted to show Beragon what I found. A new type of seed. It's similar to what we greenspeakers use to grow and shape tree villages, but different. It thrums with unique potential."
The wildburn seed?
"Bug shells! Surprise ruined! I wanted to show him the wildburn seed. Talk to him. Discuss the Recollection, both the good points and the bad.
I suppose he'll want to take the seed before the Recollection does. I suggest you hurry. They're close."
I'll search for the wildburn seed with Beragon.
"The wildburn seed grows deep in the ruins. I suggest we split up. I'll lead the Recollection on a merry chase while you and Beragon find the seed. And don't worry, I'm sure we'll meet up along the way.
And, Beragon, remember your history."

You continue to talk to her and ask about ruins:

Can you tell me anything else about this Ayleid ruin?
"This style of architecture dates back to the late Merethic era. It combines majesty with practicality, so probably a place for Daedra worship and training.
These Ayleids seem to have been particularly fond of someone they called the Prince of Paths."
How are you going to avoid the Recollection forces?
"As I said, I plan to keep some of their attention on me instead of you. After that, well, I'm very stealthy. I have no doubt I can elude their patrols.
And if I do get into trouble, I'm sure you and Beragon will come to my rescue."

Eventually you will catch up to Sorilen who will be on the walkway above you:

Beragon: "Look! Greenspeaker Sorilen, up on the walkway."
Greenspeaker Sorilen: "See, Beragon? The Colovians built atop our heritage! They buried it all!"
Beragon: "That's how it works, Sorilen. The new replaces the old."
Greenspeaker Sorilen: "I thought I could convince you. That we'd find the wildburn seed together."
<Greenspeaker Sorilen disappears.>
Beragon: "What? Sorilen, come back!"

She will appear again in another room:

Beragon: "Now she's up on the ledge!"
Greenspeaker Sorilen: "Join me, Beragon. The Recollection needs Wood Elves like you. We can finally claim our rightful inheritance!"
Beragon: "You're with the Recollection? Cracked acorns, what are you thinking? Follow her!"

At this, you will need to reach the lower chambers. Once there you will see the Wildburn seed on the lower platform. It is being guarded by Thorntooth, a Wildburn Tharriker and Greenspeaker Sorilen will be standing on a dias:

Beragon: "Sorilen, talk to me! I can't let you take that seed."
Greenspeaker Sorilen: "I won't fight you, Beragon. There are other seeds than these."
<Greenspeaker Sorilen flees.>
Beragon: "I'll go after her. Grab the seed and follow after me."
<Beragon uses his grapplebow and chases after her.>

After taking the Wildburn Seed, you can catch up to the pair as the runs through the passages to the exit. You can hear them shout at each other:

Greenspeaker Sorilen: "The Recollection seeks justice, Beragon. For all Bosmer!"
Beragon: "Spilled blood and displaced families aren't justice!"
Greenspeaker Sorilen: "We've been friends forever! Why won't you trust me?"
Beragon: "The Recollection destroyed this village! Who knows what other harm the rapid growth caused?"
Greenspeaker Sorilen: "I thought you'd understand. I thought you had vision. Goodbye, Beragon."
Beragon: "No, Sorilen! Wait!"

When you speak with Beragon afterwards he will be shocked at what happened with Sorilen.

Seeds of Suspicion[edit]

After you investigate various areas around the West Weald, a common theme that is discovered is the involvement of the Recollection. This leads you to accompany Beragon and Tribune Alea Idolus to Vashabar to search for information about the Wildburn seed you found. You speak with Greenspeaker Darolith and are eventually granted an audience with King Nantharion, who asks you to follow the leads you were provided and report your findings to him at Hoperoot. This leads to a stymied Recollection ambush and the destruction of another Wildburn Seed.

When you arrive at Hoperoot to warn the king, you find it under lockdown and the control of the Recollection. As you explore the upper branches of the treefort, you soon find King Nantharion talking to Greenspeaker Sorilen:

Greenspeaker Sorilen: "Here. The seed for Skingrad is ready, my king."
King Nantharion: "Bring it to my throne room. Vargas and I will perform the final ritual and send the seed on its way!"
Greenspeaker Sorilen: "The Shardborn are fickle allies."
King Nantharion: "We serve the same Prince. As long as I lead the Recollection, the Shardborn will aid us."
Greenspeaker Sorilen: "Yes, my king."
<The pair leave the view of the ledge.>
Tribune Alea Idolus: "I knew it! Nantharion leads the Recollection! And the Prince they serve must be Ithelia!"
Beragon: "I heard everything. Get to the throne room. I'll circle around and hit them from the back!"

With this revelation, you will need to race to the throne room. Once you arrive, Shardmarshal Vargas will be in the middle of handing Nantharion the Staff of Many Paths:

Shardmarshal Vargas: "I leave the Staff of Many Paths in your care, Nantharion. Use it well—bah! Your tree has pests!"
King Nantharion: "Greenspeaker Sorilen, deal with the intruders! They must not interfere with the ritual!"
Greenspeaker Sorilen: "Beragon's friend? For his sake, I will dispatch you quickly."
King Nantharion: "Vargas, help me prepare the seed!"
<Shardmarshal Vargas and King Nantharion begin channeling golden light into the seed.>

Greenspeaker Sorilen: "The ritual! I cannot allow you to interfere!"

During the first part of the fight, she will have her Tharriker attack you. Once you deal with them, she will jump down to deal with you herself:

Greenspeaker Sorilen: "My pets! So be it—I'll kill you myself!"

Once she is dead you will have a chance to destroy the seed and disrupt the ritual. This leads to Hoperoot becoming a smoking ruin.
