Veya Releth

Veya Releth is a Dark Elf assassin and a daughter of the prominent House Redoran family. She is a Morag Tong apprentice turned trainee currently apprenticed to Naryu Virian. Born to Eris and Tavya Releth, she and her older brother Ulran would sneak out as children to see Naryu training with her blades, growing very close to her. Following Ulran's unexplained exile, she left her family to secretly join the Morag Tong.

On Vvardenfell, Veya Releth murdered Captain Brivan and her father before being confronted and defeated, saving the lives of the Redoran council. Although High Councilor Meriath assumed Veya was killed and the matter was concluded, she was merely gravely wounded, so Naryu was able to bring her back to the Balmora safehouse. Ashur healed her and Naryu made the decision to send Veya to Summerset, parting ways at Vivec City's docks.

Although her mentor's intention was for Razum-dar to take her under his wing on the island of Summerset, Veya abandoned that path after Nocturnal comforted a despairing and lonely Veya in her dreams of Evergloam, promising her that they would "fix the world together". She took the name Tundilwen and became Nocturnal's Earl in the Court of Bedlam.

She later wielded Dawnbreaker, which her mistress stole from Darien Gautier and corrupted, much to his consternation, and fought with it during a last ditch attempt to stop Nocturnal's plans to rewrite reality with the Heart of Transparent Law in the Crystal Tower's mausoleum. Nocturnal brought her back as a powerful shade at the final confrontation atop the Crystal Tower.

Of Faith and Family[edit]

Search for the young Morag Tong apprentice in the swamps outside of Balmora and you'll hear:

Veya Releth: "Stupid Warclaws! Now I know how a mouse feels …."
"By the Three! You really shouldn't sneak up on a person like that.
If you're working with those mercenaries, I assure you—you won't take me without a fight!"
I'm working with Naryu. I have information concerning your brother.
"Oh, right! Naryu mentioned something about that.
Look, I can't wait to hear what you learned, but the swamp is crawling with mercenaries. There's a cave to the northeast. We can talk there."
Lead on and I'll follow you.
"Unfortunately, there's a mob of those beast-people between here and the cave. I was going to try to sneak past them, but every time I get too close I think one of them catches my scent."
All right. I'll deal with the Warclaws. You get to the cave.
"You're going to tackle that mob of fur and claws? I'm impressed! Meet me at the cave when you're finished. I think we have a lot to talk about.
Oh, and try not to get killed. I really want to know what you came all this way to tell me."
I'll see you in the cave shortly.
Veya Releth: "Meet me in the cave to the north when you finish with the mercenaries."

If you try to speak to her before leaving, she'll repeat:

"Well, what are you waiting for? I can't make a break for the cave until you engage the mercenaries. If they aren't busy with you, they'll spot me before I take three steps!"

Defeat the Warclaws and you'll hear:

Veya Releth: "Up here! Hurry, before more of them show up!"

Enter Mallapi Cave:

"What do you think of my luxurious accommodations? It's got dirt and rock, fungus and a paltry fire … all the comforts of home.
Anyway, you said you had information about my brother, Ulran? What did you find out?"
According to the House Redoran Registry, your brother Ulran was stripped of his rank and exiled.
"No, that can't be right.
Ulran's honorable and noble. He's a model soldier. What could he have possibly done to warrant being banished?"
According to Captain Brivan, Ulran killed one of his own soldiers to protect an Ashlander.
"What? My brother has always been interested in the Ashlanders. Even showed them a kindness the rest of the House doesn't approve of.
But for him to kill someone, especially one of his own soldiers, something terrible must have happened."
Any idea where we can find these Ashlanders? They may be able to tell us about the incident.
"I know the tribe that Ulran liked to help. Brought them supplies and such. He'd go and visit their camp whenever our father wasn't paying attention. Will you go with me to talk to them?
Wait, someone's coming!"
Get behind me.

After meeting Veya in Mallapi Cave, the councilor sends the Warclaw mercenaries in to find Veya. Naryu appears again.

Naryu Virian: "She can handle herself just fine, hero. Veya, grab your things. It's time to go."
Veya Releth: "Go? Why? What's going on?"
Naryu Virian: "The Warclaws are marching toward this cave, along with half the House Redoran soldiers in Balmora. We need to go now."
Veya Releth: "Damn it, they must have followed us! I'll get my stuff."

Speak to Naryu and she'll suggest the three of you leave by the back exit:

"I've never ventured through the exit, so this will be new territory for the both of us. I'll do my best to try and help though."

Enter the Back Tunnels and she'll remark:

Veya Releth: "Does the ceiling look unstable to you?"

Speaking to her while she follows you:

"I'm ready for anything. Well, except if the tunnels cave in on top of us.
What? Nobody's ever ready for a ton of rock to fall on their head!"

Make you're way through the cave and you'll hear:

Warclaw Mercenary: "Search everywhere! Captain Brivan thinks the Councilor's kitten might try to escape through these tunnels."
Veya Releth: "Damn! Those cat bastards are harder to shake than a blind date!"

A little further on, Veya will comment:

Veya Releth: "I can't get captured and taken back to my father, not when I'm this close to finding my brother."

or:

Veya Releth: "This looks promising. Let's give it a try."

And as you near the exit, she'll say:

Veya Releth: "That must be the way out! I just hope there aren't any Redorans up there."

Exit the cave and you'll see a disturbing sight:

Veya Releth: "Oh no, we're surrounded! And that's my father! What's he doing here?"
Captain Brivan: "Sweep the caves. If you spot Veya, report back to me. She's not to be harmed!"
Councilor Eris: "I prefer that you don't harm the agents I hired, either. There's no need for bloodshed."

Speaking to her about what to do next:

"Father ruins everything! I'm so close to finding my brother and he shows up to drag me back home.
Well, I'm not going back without a fight!"
I'll cause a distraction so you can get out of here.
"You—you'd do that for me? Thanks. I guess.
But what can you possibly do against all those soldiers? My father brought the whole damn army with him this time!"
Your father hired me to find you and set up a meeting. I might as well give him a progress report.
"Clever. Tell my father whatever he wants to hear. That might actually work!
Afterward, meet me at the Ashlander camp to the south. My brother would often visit that particular tribe. It's as good a place as any to start."
Will you meet with your father after you find your brother?
"Once I find Ulran and make sure he's all right, I'll meet with my father. But that meeting will be on my terms, not his.
And tell him to call off his soldiers or I might change my mind. That should buy us some time."

After distracting Councilor Eris by giving a report to him, you meet up with Naryu and Veya at an Ashlander camp; Veya eager to find her brother.

Naryu Virian: "Well, those certainly aren't Ashlanders, not with those tails!"
Veya Releth: "This is... disturbing..."
"I can't believe this! Why allow the Warclaws to run roughshod over the camp like this? What's House Redoran thinking?
And what in the name of the Three have they done with the Ashlanders?"
You're sure this was an Ashlander camp?
"My brother often visited this camp. Took me along a couple of times. It used to be such a vibrant place, so full of life.
I know House Redoran wants to expand along the western coast, but I never expected they'd set the Warclaws loose like this."
Do you think your brother and the Ashlanders are still here?
"If Ulran was here, he'd never stand for the Warclaws invading the camp. He told me the Ashlanders were the same as you and I. Different beliefs don't necessarily make people bad.
We need to see if we can find out what happened here."
I'll look around and see what I can find.
"I really want to help, but Naryu won't hear of it! "We don't get our hands dirty unless there's a writ attached," as she's so fond of reminding me.
We'll hang around and wait for you to find something before we move in."
Stay out of the way of the Warclaws until I find out where your brother is.

After speaking to Veya, Naryu tries to dissuade her from entering the camp:

Naryu Virian: "Veya, I don't think this is a good idea. We're trying to keep you out of House Redoran hands, remember?"
Veya Releth: "You're not my parent, Naryu! I can take care of myself, even if 'the Mother of Blades' doesn't think so."
Naryu Virian: "Damn it, Veya! You know I hate that title."
Veya finds her brother's body

As you progress through Kudanat Mine you'll hear Warclaws discussing burning bodies and before long you'll discover the corpses of Ashlanders and sadly Veya's brother.

Veya Releth: "Come on! Wait...what's that smell?"
Naryu Virian: "Veya! Stay back. You don't need to see this."
Veya Releth: "What happened here? Oh gods, they murdered these poor Ashlanders!"
Veya Releth: "What happened here? Oh gods, they murdered these poor Ashlanders!"
Veya Releth: "Oh no, Ulran!"
Veya Releth: "Ulran! Wake up, please. You can't be dead! You just can't!"

Speak to Naryu and tell her about the speaking stone you found on Ulran's body. She'll encourage you to activate it. Do so and Ulran's image will appear and speak:

Ulran Releth: If you're listening to my voice, know that my time is short, and what I have to say is important.

Veya comes over to listen as well.

Veya Releth: "Brother … is that you?"
Ulran Releth: "Everything that happened was a deliberate act to discredit me. I need to report the events so my sister can learn the truth about her brother."

After the message plays out, Veya will exclaim:

Veya Releth: "Ulran! Damn it, what am I supposed to do now?"

Speaking to her:

"Ulran's not supposed to be dead. That wasn't the way this was supposed to end! What am I going to do now? Damn Ulran for leaving me that damn message! And damn him for dying on me!
Gods, I miss my brother."
I'm sorry for your loss, Veya.
"I still don't understand. Ulran said someone set him up to fall. Who would do such a thing? And why would they do it? Ulran never wanted to hurt anyone!"
It sounds like your brother was a good man.
"So that's why they exiled him? That's why they killed him? He was too damn good? That's the problem!
We've got to find out who did all this. They won't get away with this. I won't allow it!"
We'll find out who did this to him.
"Oh, I'll find them, all right. And when I do, they'll pay for what happened to Ulran. I swear by Mephala's sacred web and the first blood my blade ever tasted, I'm going to avenge my brother."

A Purposeful Writ[edit]

Ashur will convince you to try to comfort the grief stricken apprentice. Enter the safe house and you'll hear:

Veya Releth: "Get out of here, Ashur! I don't need a nursemaid, no matter what Naryu might think!"
Veya Releth: "Oh, it's you. Sorry about that."
"Did Ashur send you to check up on me? I swear, the next person that treats me like a child is going to find my dagger in their stomach!
Gods, I'm not mad at you. I'm just annoyed at everybody right now!"
Do you want me to leave?
"No. I don't think so. It's just been difficult. Finding poor Ulran in the Ashlander camp.
I need to be doing something. Sitting down here in the dark, hiding. That's not going to solve anything."
But Naryu told you to stay here.
"I know, but Naryu's writ. It involves a Redoran councilor—exactly the opportunity I've been waiting for! The councilor knows who set up my brother. We need to talk to her before Naryu executes the writ.
Do this for me and I promise to stay here."
All right. Where can I find Naryu?
"Well, Naryu wouldn't tell me any specifics, but she trained me well. It wasn't hard to sneak a glance at the writ before she took off.
Her target's at Arenim Manor, out in the swamp. Not far from that smelly cave, actually."
I'll go to Arenim Manor and see if we can delay Naryu's kill long enough to learn anything.
"I appreciate you agreeing to see what you can learn at Arenim Manor. My father used to say it was used by councilors as a retreat, but Mother always told me it was where they conducted business that required a certain degree of privacy."
Have you given any thought to your brother's message?
"That's all I've been doing. Thinking! And I think Ulran was right. I think someone wanted him out of the way and they orchestrated the event with the Ashlanders to do it.
Someone played my brother for a fool and it cost him his life."
What can you tell me about Captain Brivan?
"Brivan's as stubborn as my father when it comes to following the rules and regulations of House Redoran. Ulran and Brivan were best friends, even if they argued from time to time."
What did Brivan and Ulran argue about?
"Politics, foreign relations, the Ashlanders—you name an issue and Ulran and Brivan were probably on opposite sides of the argument. It got to the point where I had to ignore both of them or they'd drive me insane."
I told your father what happened to Ulran.
"You … you did? How did he take it? I mean, he didn't know that my brother was dead?"
He didn't know and he seemed as upset as you are over the news.
"Really? I suppose that makes sense. I think he loves us … in his own way.
But what else did he say? Did he know that Ulran had been banished?"
He told Ulran to go to the main land. He didn't expect him to turn to the Ashlanders for shelter.
"He didn't expect …? My father doesn't know his children as well as he thinks. Either of them! That's why I had to get away. Join the Morag Tong. At least Naryu understands me.
Mostly."
Your father said you should avoid House Redoran until he can sort out what happened.
"I can't agree to that. I need to figure out what happened to my brother. Who was involved. And then I'm going to make them pay. Just you watch!"

Return to the safe house from Arenim Manor:

"Back again? Took your sweet time. You didn't learn anything, did you? Not that it matters. Ulran's dead and nothing can change that."
We know where to find the soldiers who were with Ulran the day of the incident.
"What good is that going to do? They won't speak to us. House before family and all that. Believe me, I'm more than familiar with Redoran honor.
Still, I suppose I know a few ways to get people to talk …."
I don't think you should leave the safehouse until Naryu gets back.
"More rules? I thought we were beyond those kinds of limitations?
Look, I need to figure out who's responsible for Ulran's death. House councilors, Redoran soldiers, Ashlanders—whoever it is, they need to pay."
We also discovered that Captain Brivan might have had a role in Ulran's troubles.

If you exit dialogue at this point and talk to her again:

"So you think my brother's soldiers might be able to tell us what happened the day he was exiled? I hope you can make them break their code of silence.
And what was that you said about Brivan?"
Evidence we uncovered suggests that Captain Brivan was somehow involved in Ulran's troubles.
"Brivan was Ulran's best friend. Would he really betray my brother?
Regardless, I want you to have this. You could have handed me to my father and you didn't. Other than Naryu and Ashur, you might be the only friend I have left."

Family Reunion[edit]

After completing A Purposeful Writ, she'll go right into the next quest:

"So which soldiers are we talking about? I know most of the people my brother used to work with.
Eyewitnesses are better than notes in the House Registry—provided I can actually get them to talk to me."
Vatola Telem's squad. They're scouting the old fort. But I really think we should wait for Naryu.
"There's no time to waste. That fort's near the cave where I was hiding. Last time I was there, the fort was crawling with cultists.
We need to find them before Vatola and his soldiers wind up sacrificed to some Daedric Prince."
A few more moments—
"Will get Vatola and his soldiers killed! I know the process. Turning in a writ can take hours, maybe even an entire day! I'll leave Naryu a note. She can meet us at the fort.
I'm going. Either come with me or get out of my way."
All right. I'll help you find the Redoran soldiers.
"Let me gather my gear and write a note for Naryu. I'll meet you near the Hlormaren stronghold.
The more I think about it, the more convinced I am that we'll learn who's responsible for Ulran's death soon. Then blood will flow."
"Blood will flow?" Don't you need a writ to kill someone?
"As far as I'm concerned, rules got my brother killed. They don't apply to me anymore.
Besides, to find the soldiers we're probably going to have to carve a path through those cultists. The Morag Tong won't care about that."
I thought Naryu was responsible for your actions?
"That's what the handbook says. Look, I know what Naryu's done for me. To keep me safe. I appreciate that.
But this is about what they did to my brother. Nothing else matters. Not Naryu. Not you. And certainly not me."
Don't force me to choose between you and Naryu.
"No … never. You and Naryu aren't my enemies. I just need to get justice for Ulran. Otherwise his death will be the first of many.
We have to be able to resist laws that make no sense or get people hurt without being afraid of getting exiled."
Do you know Vatola Telem?
"I know Vatola. He's a typical Redoran soldier. Loyal to a fault. Always spouting nonsense about house and honor above all.
He was devoted to my brother, though. Ulran considered him to be one of his best."
Why didn't Vatola stand up for Ulran at his trial?
"Ulran had a habit of putting the needs of others ahead of his own. He probably told Vatola and his soldiers to remain quiet. Decided to take responsibility and save them any heartache.
I hope these soldiers remember that when we find them."

Go to the fort and find an agitated Veya:

"You're here. I'm here. The damn cultists are here. You know who isn't here? Vatola and his squad!
They're probably hiding. Or dead. They better not be dead."
Have you seen Naryu yet?
"Naryu's probably busy clearing her writ and we don't have time to wait.
This opportunity to learn more about what happened to Ulran won't last much longer. We need to find that squad of soldiers."
We should really wait for Naryu before we do anything rash.
"Fine. You wait for Naryu. I'm going to go and find those soldiers."
All right, we'll handle this your way. Any idea where we should look for the soldiers?

(The response is the same as the next question's)

You know the area. Any idea where we should look for the Redoran soldiers?
"Their orders were to scout the old stronghold. I suggest we search along the outskirts and see if we can pick up their trail."

Speaking to her before starting the search:

"We need to find those soldiers. I won't let this chance get away from us."

As you look for clues, she'll comment:

Veya Releth: "A bedroll, still wrapped and ready to use. Standard issue for a Redoran soldier."
Veya Releth: "A Redoran officer's sword. No Redoran soldier would leave that behind willingly."
Veya Releth: "Corporal Darvel … I knew him. But the others, they're civilians. They must have taken Telem's soldiers inside."

Speaking with her after inspecting the clues:

"We've got to get inside the stronghold. The Three only know what the cultists have planned for my brother's soldiers.
Ulran wouldn't want them to wind up sacrificed for the glory of a crazed Daedric Prince."

Try to enter the fortress and the door will not open:

Veya Releth: "Locked! Figures. Let's see if one of these damn cultists has a key."

Cut your way through cultists until you find one with a key:

Veya Releth: "There we go. Let's get inside and find the others before it's too late."

Inside:

Veya Releth: "Let's find the soldiers and get out of here before these stupid cultists realize what's happening."

Veya will run ahead. Suddenly you'll hear:

Vatola Telem: "Who's there? We won't let you take us without a fight! Wait—Veya, is that you?"
Veya Releth: "Thank the Three, you're all still alive!"

Speak to Vatola, who'll tell you to get a key to free him. Veya will stay behind:

Veya Releth: "You find the key. Me and Vatola, we're going to have a little chat while we're waiting."
Vatola Telem: "Veya, I'm just trying to protect you …."
Veya Releth: "From what? The truth? Oh, please! I want to know who did this to my brother."

Speaking with Veya before leaving to get the key:

"You find the key. In the meantime, Vatola and I are going to get reacquainted. I want to hear about what happened when my brother was sent to confront the Ashlanders."

Deal with Curate Skaliz and you'll hear from elsewhere in the fort:

Vatola Telem: "Veya, wait! You can't leave us like this!"

Return to Vatola and he'll inform you that Veya has fled to Balmora.

Later, at the garrison, you'll find and confront Brivan. As soon as you hear that Councilor Eris is the one that was responsible for Ulran's death, Veya will sneak up behind the captain and stab him:

Veya Releth: "That's for Ulran. Choke on your own blood, you bastard."
Veya Releth: "My father, the entire council, they're all guilty. They all have to die. I have to do this, so stay out of my way."
Naryu Virian: "Veya actually did it. She killed Brivan in cold blood."

Make your way to the meeting hall and you'll be barred by a locked gate. While Naryu tries to get the lock open, you'll be forced to witness the following scene:

Councilor Eris: "Veya, daughter. I'm so sorry. I never meant for any of this to happen."
Veya Releth: "Father, why? Does the House really matter more than your own son?"
Councilor Eris: "I needed to protect Ulran … to prove his loyalty. If I could do it all over again …."
Veya Releth: "But you can't! None of us can …. That's why I have to do this."

As Veya strikes her father, Naryu pleas for her to stop:

Naryu Virian: "Veya, no! That's an order!"

Once the councilor lays in a pool of his own blood, Veya addresses her mentor:

Veya Releth: "I'm not your apprentice any more. The House has grown corrupt, evil. That's why all the councilors have to die."

Veya Releth: "No more rules! No more secrets! House Redoran falls today!
Naryu Virian: "Enough, Veya! This isn't the way."
Naryu Virian: "Veya's down. It's over."

If you chose to keep Veya alive, you'll find her, Naryu, and Ashur in the safe house. Ashur will have mended her wounds. Though you can't speak to her directly, she'll come out of unconsciousness long enough to speak to Naryu:

Veya Releth: "Naryu? What happened?"
Naryu Virian: "Quiet, Veya. Rest now. We can talk later."

Veya may be at the Vivec City docks after the completion of the quest, where you can speak to her:

Veya Releth: "I don't have to go, you know. I can help clean things up around here. I know how to keep a low profile."
Naryu Virian: "This isn't up for debate. You're going."

Speaking to her at the docks:

"Naryu thought you might stop by. You probably hate me and I completely understand.
I'm still glad you showed up though."
Do you think you can put this all behind you?
"I lost my brother, I killed my own father … I kind of went crazy out there for a while. I don't think I'll ever put this completely behind me. But I'll do what Naryu asks. I'll go away, finish my training. Try to make a new start."
Where is Naryu sending you?
"To Summerset, but don't tell anybody. She was quite adamant about that.
She's given me a letter of introduction for some highfalutin Khajiit. Works for a queen or something. Anyway, he's going to be my new mentor."
Well, good luck to you, Veya.
"Look, I'm sorry. Ulran's death made me crazy―that's no excuse―but I'm never going to forgive House Redoran for the attitudes that brought us here. I'm done with them.
Take care of Naryu. I don't want her to get hurt because of me."

Summerset[edit]

Lost in Translation[edit]

She snuffs out Leythen's connection to you, causing his projection to dissipate.

Earl Tundilwen/Veya Releth: "Now that Leythen's gone, we can talk freely."

Speak to her; if you've met her before, she will give you a bit of unique dialogue:

If you've never seen her before If you've seen her once before
"These words of power, they aren't meant for mortal eyes.
As an earl in the Court of Bedlam, believe me when I say that Leythen isn't being totally honest with you."
As an earl in the Court of Bedlam, why should I believe a word you say?
"I wish to maintain the balance of power among the Daedric triad. If Leythen translates this language and passes the secret on to his mistress, Mephala, she'll gain an advantage that could threaten my Prince, Nocturnal."
"I never expected to see you again, but you shouldn't have come here. These words of power, they aren't meant for mortal eyes.
I'm an earl in the Court of Bedlam now. So believe me when I say that Leythen isn't being totally honest with you."
Veya from Balmora? You're Nocturnal's earl? How did that happen?
"That doesn't matter. What matters is that I want to maintain the balance of power among the Daedric triad. If Leythen translates the language and gives Mephala the secret, she'll gain an advantage that could threaten my Prince, Nocturnal."
It sounds like the triad of Daedric Princes isn't as united as we thought.
"Speculate all you want. I'm here to give you a gift. Nocturnal has authorized me to provide you with the meaning of the mysterious phrase.
It's in all our best interests for the Ritemaster to remember where he hid the Heart of Transparent Law."
So what do the words mean?
"The phrase the Ritemaster remembers, the words he keeps hearing, it's a spell to retrieve something hidden.
When the time is right, he just needs to repeat the phrase to reveal the Heart's hiding place."
I'll let the Ritemaster know.
"I wasn't sure how I'd feel if I saw you or Naryu again. Balmora seems like a lifetime ago, and I'm a new person since committing myself to Nocturnal's service.
I wish you weren't involved in this matter."
You knew exactly when and where to contact me. How?
"Artaeum is only as isolated as it allows itself to be. Fire the abyssal pearl allowed the Sea Sload and Mephala to invade the Psijic island. Then you took Leythen, an earl in the Court of Bedlam, prisoner.
We know your moves before you make them."
What does the triad of Daedric Princes hope to achieve?
"Our Princes plan to do away with the laws imposed by other powers. They want to remake Nirn, reshape it to better suit their every inclination.
Of course to do this, all obstacles must be cast aside- including the other Daedric Princes."
And what does the Court of Bedlam get out of all this?
"The Court isn't evil. We wouldn't be a part of something that didn't add to the greater good. When our Princes are done, war and sickness will be eradicated. There will be true peace.
And godhood for the Court, as befits beings of our stature."
(If you spared Veya in Family Reunion) You were suppose to start a new life in Summerset. I don't think this is what Naryu had in mind.
"A new life? More like a new prison! Serving at the feet of a Khajiit to become a slave to the High Elf Queen? No, that's not an existence I could bear.
I follow the shadowy paths of Nocturnal now. She gives me the freedom to be who I really am!"
(If you killed Veya in Family Reunion) You're supposed to be dead. Naryu killed you in Balmora.
"Naryu is a liar and a coward. She pretends to be a cold-hearted killer, but she couldn't bring herself to spill my blood.
Instead, she sent me away. Shipped me off to protect me, she said. To save me. More likely she just wanted to save herself."
How did you wind up in service to Nocturnal?
"I felt abandoned, lost. That's when Nocturnal offered to comfort me. Not the Morag Tong. Not a Khajiit guardian. Not even you.
Nocturnal gave me a purpose and a family. She gave me something to believe in."
You know we're going to stop the triad of Daedric Princes.
"Belief doesn't make something true. You stopped me once, but I'm stronger now. More powerful. As for the Princes, you're barely a speck on a flea that gets casually brushed aside after a minor irritation.
Do what you must. This only ends one way."

She has the last word as she disappears.

Earl Tundilwen/Veya Releth: "Tell the Ritemaster. It's a spell of retrieval."

A Necessary Alliance[edit]

You will encounter her again in the Cathedral of Webs, upon arriving in the room with the chasm. She will be on the other side:

Earl Tundilwen/Veya Releth: "It pains me that it had to end this way, but my Mistress will not be denied."
Leythen: "Butcher! How dare you pretend to care about the men and women you slaughtered!"
Earl Tundilwen/Veya Releth: "Every action I performed was in the service of Nocturnal's grand plan."
Darien Gautier: "Leythen, she has my Dawnbreaker. Ask her if she'll kindly return it."

Leythen will attempt to draw information out of the Earl of Nocturnal.

Leythen: "Champion of Nocturnal, what magic is this? I've never seen anything like it."
Earl Tundilwen/Veya Releth: "This was always the plan. Nocturnal's plan."
Leythen: "So Nocturnal did betray my mistress!"
Earl Tundilwen/Veya Releth: "Your mistress is weak. Come with me and I'll show you what the true power looks like!"

She then runs away, as Leythen teleports across the chasm to chase after her.

Upon catching up to them:

Leythen: "This magic, it destroys everything! What good is power if there's nothing left to rule?"
Earl Tundilwen/Veya Releth: "This is what the Court wanted all along. An end to the old ways. A new beginning."
Leythen: "I won't be party to the death of innocents! I won't—"

<Veya incapacitates Leythen with the corrupted Dawnbreaker.>

Darien Gautier: "Let him go!"
Earl Tundilwen/Veya Releth: "Be silent, knight, or I'll let you taste the blade you once carried. I wish to speak to your friend now."

Talk to Veya and figure out what she has to say for herself:

"I'm sorry it had to come to this, but nothing can stop the magic of the pearls now.
My Mistress offers a small mercy. Leave her to finish her work and she'll kill the Psijics quickly. But if you interfere, you will all suffer before you die."
What are you doing with the abyssal pearls?
"The Sea Sload trinkets? It was an easy matter for my Mistress to alter the magic. To use their ability to siphon life energy and funnel it into the Crystal Tower.
In the end, your own world will provide the power that spells its doom!"
Veya, you can't let Nocturnal destroy the world!
"Stop calling me that! Veya died on a cold, hard floor in Balmora. I'm Tundilwen now, champion of Nocturnal!
As the Crystal Tower fills with power drawn from this dying world, it will provide my Mistress with what she needs to remake reality."
(If you completed her quests during Morrowind){{huh|dialogue without having met her before?)
So why betray the other Princes?
"Mephala and Clavicus Vile are fledglings compared to my Mistress! Nocturnal existed before this reality was even imagined, and she will ride its destruction into the next!
This isn't an end—it's a new beginning!"
I'll find a way to stop you.

Once you have spoken with her, she will have the final word before leaving:

Earl Tundilwen/Veya Releth: "Good luck with that. Now stay out of the way or death will be the least of your concerns."

The Crystal Tower[edit]

Veya's projection within the Crystal Tower

After you attempt to take the Skeleton Key from its pedestal in the Crystal Tower's library, Veya appears as a projection, taking it first and taunting you, Leythen and Darien Gautier.

Darien Gautier: "Where did she come from?"
Earl Tundilwen/Veya Releth: "Nocturnal's started to repair Transparent Law. Soon none of this will matter."
Earl Leythen: "No, you mustn't do this!"
Darien Gautier: "You can't reason with crazy, Leythen. Besides, we've got company!"
Earl Tundilwen: "How observant, knight."

More shadowy creatures then appear, which you need to defeat. Veya begins losing her patience.

Earl Tundilwen/Veya Releth: "Why do you insist on prolonging your pain, Leythen?"
Earl Leythen: "You know nothing about pain!"
Earl Tundilwen/Veya Releth: "A pity. I thought we were the same. No matter. Your quest ends here."
Earl Leythen: "She's just trying to slow us down. Meet me up at the gate pedestal!"

As you go through the gate, Veya appears once more, this time in the flesh:

Earl Tundilwen/Veya Releth: "I have to stop you here. All of you."
Earl Leythen: "I wondered if you'd actually show yourself instead of just projecting menacing images."
Earl Tundilwen/Veya Releth: "A closed gate won't save them, Leythen."
Earl Leythen: "No, but this will keep you busy for a time."
Earl Tundilwen/Veya Releth: "What? No!"

Leythen binds Tundilwen with his magic and teleports off with her, away from the protection of the Resolute Anchor. Her voice is heard again not long after Leythen's demise.

Earl Tundilwen/Veya Releth: "You thought Leythen could stop me? He's only delayed the inevitable!"
Darien Gautier: "Ignore the creepy voice. We have to keep going."

She will then stand in your way you at the Tower Summit Approach.

Earl Tundilwen/Veya Releth: "That's far enough! My Mistress can't be interrupted! Her work is too important."
Darien Gautier: "Give me the damn Dawnbreaker back!"
Earl Tundilwen/Veya Releth: "Come and get it!"

You must then defeat her. When you exhaust her energy, she will fall to her knees.

Earl Tundilwen/Veya Releth: "I don't understand. Why didn't the sword protect me?"
Darien Gautier: "Because Dawnbreaker was never intended for you."
Earl Tundilwen/Veya Releth: "Meridia's magic is gone. The blade isn't yours anymore, either."
Darien Gautier: "We'll see about that."

Nocturnal then fills the room with her choking shadows in an attempt to kill you and Darien. Darien manages to repel the shadows with the reclaimed Dawnbreaker, but not in time to avoid the earl's death.

She will be resurrected twice by Nocturnal atop the Crystal Tower as Shadow Veya (or Shadow Tundilwen).

Skills and Abilities[edit]
Shadow Bolt
A basic ranged attack dealing low magical damage.
Shadow Leap
Wide dark wings appear behind Veya as she leaps at you and slams into the ground, indicated by a quickly growing circular AoE, dealing moderate physical damage and knocking you away.
Veya, defeated
Shadow Bloom
Veya holds her weapons close to her as multiple shadow waves erupt and travel outwards from her in all directions, indicated by circular AoEs, dealing moderate shadow damage each and stunning you.
Duskbringer
Veya holds the corrupted Dawnbreaker upwards as an AoE slowly starts to fill the room in its entirety. Once the AoE reaches max build-up, a massive explosion erupts, dealing massive magical damage and knocking you away. The only way to avoid this ability is to go over to Darien to take shelter behind him, as indicated by a small green circular AoE.

Old Life Observance[edit]

The spirit of Veya Releth

After her death, the spirit of Veya Releth may return from Aetherius and appear to you during the New Life Festival event quest Old Life Observance when you perform a remembrance ceremony at one of the Old Life shrines.

Notes[edit]

Veya's health value varies throughout the game. It's 15,000 while she's not a follower during Balmora questline in Morrowind, at the Ebon Sanctum and Cathedral of Webs in Summerset, and in her physical form within the Crystal Tower. It's 60,370 while she's a follower during Of Faith and Family, and 31,364 while she follows you at Hlormaren Stronghold.
