- Before then the Shrine of The Moth will be blocked by a boulder that canot be moved.
Haven't started Thieves Guild quest, but entered the shrine easily. Just pressed balance rock and got into. — Unsigned comment by Merri (talk • contribs)
- Not realizing that this sentence had finally been deleted from the article, I just spent too much time trying to figure out if there is any basis for this sentence. And concluded that I couldn't find any evidence to support the entrance being blocked. There is nothing anywhere in the construction set that alters the front door to this temple, and there is nothing in the scripts related to Turning a Blind Eye that changes the status of any doors. And finally, there's nothing to support it in game. I've been to the temple with two different characters who had never even joined the Thieves Guild and I had no trouble entering. Let alone all the people who've been bugged by exploring without starting the quest. So just in case anyone cares, I figured I'd put all this information here for future reference :) --NepheleTalk 23:44, 30 July 2007 (EDT)

- The page indicates,"It is possible to proceed to complete the Thieves Guild quest line this way, bypassing the first two-thirds of the Thieves Guild quest." This may not be true, at least not for the Xbox 360. I have tried the entire quest line at least a dozen different ways and simply cannot get the last quest to start. It is really not possible to bypass the first 2/3rds because "Independent Thievery (Quest ID: TGStolenGoods)" must be running to get the next quest. Please either update the page to indicate that it is NOT possible to complete the line or give a more detailed procedure of how it may be completed. Bethsoft is hesitant to patch this because they read the UESP and do not belive there is a problem.68.149.251.64 13:56, 29 October 2008 (EDT)Murray B.

- I am also using the Xbox 360 and thought it wasn't possible, like Murray B, but this is what I did and then I could proceed. I went to the Temple of the Ancestor Moths, and after that I did the May the Best Thief Win quest to trigger the "Independent Thievery". After completing that very first one, I followed Amusei to see where he went (and boy, he is a slow walker). Amusei ended up by one of the beggar's bedroll in Leyawiin (but one does not have to follow him, like I did - I have double checked that - just enter the west gate and follow the wall, going south) and he stayed there for the rest of the quest line. All I had to do was to go to him, instead of waiting for him to contact me, and I could ask him the question. like "What is the message?" PS. I also have the Dunbarrow Cove plugin, where I had already fenced enough to be able to continue (but since I had joined, I think I could have used Ongar in Bruma). Ring Spawning[edit]
In the "Notes" section of this article it states:
- The Blind Moth Prelate in Shrine of the Moth always has a high level amulet or ring which is randomly generated when you enter the final zone (i.e., when you pass through the door that has a load screen).
- This is not true on the V1.2 GOTY PC version I have. I've tried reloading from a few different places, however it seems to me that the ring/amulet the Blind Moth Prelate has is generated when he re-spawns, not when you enter the final zone where he is located. One thing to note is that I've harvested about 10 rings now, and I've never had a repeat. Does this indicate that, for example, if you keep a "Mundane Ring" in your inventory when he re-spawns (when a new ring is chosen), that the game engine selects a random ring excluding the rings already in your inventory? Too early to tell for sure, but it certainly seems that way.
- 78.86.205.201 05:16, 16 December 2008 (EST)D Searle, 16 Dec 2008
- The ring is respawning as long as the "Turning a Blind Eye" quest is not active. Complete the quest and return in 3 days to make the random generated ring be different before entering the Prelate moth room 11 Sep 2022.
- The prelate is only generated when you enter the final room, so you're essentially correct about it being when he respawns, but once generated he'll stay there until killed. It's easier to describe it as already done on the article.
- For the second point, there is such a huge range of rings and amulets that may be generated that it isn't surprising you're getting a different one each time. There's certainly no guarantee that you won't get one you don't already have. –Rpeh•T•C•E• 06:49, 16 December 2008 (EST)
- For what it's worth, on the latest patched 360 version it seems to be fixed at some point before entering the temple zone during the quest at least. I'll try going back after a few days of game time to see if he respawns and becomes random again. I don't feel like starting over at the top of the catacombs to see if it starts earlier. Patient bugger that I can be I tried 11 (yeah, why stop at 10) reloads before using the key to open the last door and every single time he had a Base Amulet of Absorption for me.--DoubleGrande 03:25, 25 February 2009 (EST)
- Indeed, later visits result in random rings / amulets, but it seems like it remains fixed at least as early as entering the catacombs during the quest.--DoubleGrande 08:28, 1 March 2009 (EST)
- On the Xbox 360, I'm pretty sure that when you go to the temple as part of the quest line, the ring is set at the very start of the quest when Methredhel contacts you. I went back to saves made prior to even talking to the Grey Fox and every time as I went back further and further, I still found a Ring of Feather on the Prelate when doing the quest. It wasn't until I went back to a save made just prior to talking to Methredhel (and getting the journal entry) that I could get the ring to change.--ACGrecor 01:36, 26 July 2009 (UTC)
- FOLLOW-UP -- I have confirmed that when NOT following the quest line, the behavior is as described -- you can save just before the final zone and will get a different ring (or occasionally amulet) each time. I stand by my previous testing, however, that when accessing the temple as part of the QUEST, the ring appears to be generated when you are given the quest.--ACGrecor 04:50, 2 August 2009 (UTC)
- Are you sure it's when you talk to Methredhel? I could understand if the change took place when you talk to the Gray Fox, as the script modifies the cell by adding Savilla's Stone and the note about the cowl, but talking to Methredhel doesn't seem to change anything. –rpeh•T•C•E• 06:49, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
- Quite sure. I went back and did it on my previous playthrough as well (different character) since I had kept saves at the end of every level. I went back and loaded from a save BEFORE I talked to the Grey Fox to get the quest detail and I still got the same ring every time. Only loading prior to talking to Methredhel (when the quest entry first shows up) was I able to get a different ring (and I tried that twice to make sure). Since I went straight from Methredhel to the Grey Fox on my confirmation run-through with the previous character (and on my retry with my current character), I can only conclude that it's set at the beginning of the quest.

- Playing the Xbox/GotY edition, I've saved the game right at the door before entering the final room where the Prelate is located. Despite this, every single time I cross that door and kill him, the ring he carries is the same. This would suggest that the Prelate is generated far earlier than what the wiki articles currently state. —Dark Spark 15:32, 13 April 2009 (EDT)
I've done some testing on this issue. On the XBox 360, the Blind Moth Prelate in the Shrine of the Moth does NOT spawn as you enter the final zone. If you save before entering it, you will find the same ring on him every time. You must exit the whole dungeon, wait 73 game hrs as soon as you are outside, and then cruise through and back to the Blind Moth Prelate in the Shrine in order to find a new ring/amulet. No need to save, anywhere, as you do this, unless you have a reason for saving besides quick access to the shrine. Perhaps this is a PC only trick? Again, I have only tested on the XBox version.

- After thinking some more about the fastest way to grind out rings/amulets from the Prelate, here is what I've come up with. Save right outside the front door to the temple. Buy a 30 second invisibility spell. Go into sneak mode, open the front door to the temple, and cast your invisibility spell. You may now safely leave sneak mode and run as fast as you can through the temple. Remember to cast invisibility after each door. Check the priest for goodies after killing him. If you found something you like, leave as you would normally and if you want to go thru again, wait for 73 hours. If you find a piece of crap ring/amulet, reload your save.
It seems like its about 2 or 3 times faster to run than to sneak-run thru the place, but it seems invisibility is the only way to not be caught. Or does 100% chameleon work? The priests seemed to catch on to me unless I casted invisibility...Psychedelicious 19:38, 12 May 2009 (EDT)
- 100% chameleon works, at least on the 360.--ACGrecor 01:36, 26 July 2009 (UTC)
Tipped-over Stool[edit]
Recently I ran through the Temple of the Ancestor Moths, hoping to find some enchanted items. One room (which I cannot recall) contained a chair that was tipped over and could not be moved. When you activate it, your character sits in mid-air in the normal sitting position. Should this be mentioned on the page in the appropriate cell? --Matthewest •T•C•E• 03:44, 15 April 2009 (EDT)
- I cannot find the chair you refer to. The few that can be found in the Temple all seem to be normal. --Timenn < talk > 10:39, 15 April 2009 (EDT)
I'm Stuck! Theives Guild Bug[edit]
It says that you can carry on the thieves guild quest if "turning a blind eye is activated through the bug/glitch at first i was very happy it was working but now it says i must have fenced 700 septims worth of stolen goods and i have more than doubled it so can someone please help me!
- Sounds like you have struck the quest breaking bug. Sometimes following Amusei around restores the quest, but that is unlikley. --Manic 21:55, 10 June 2011 (UTC)
Master Alchemy Apparatus[edit]
sry, for bad Englisch; i'm german, but i found sth else in the catacombs. 2 Alchemy Master Aparats. The Master Calcinatorand the master Mortar & Pestle.. — Unsigned comment by 87.175.178.131 (talk) on 6 August 2009
- Thanks, but those will be random items rather than ones that appear every time. That's why they aren't listed. –rpeh•T•C•E• 12:05, 6 August 2009 (UTC)
- I too found a Master Calcinator in the temple at level 22, I think this place has a high probability for Master Apparatus' to be found in random chests. — Unsigned comment by 24.82.101.150 (talk) on 30 August 2010
Monk's Quarters?[edit]
The house that the top-side monks live in, Monk's Quarters isn't mentioned on the page at all, nor does it have it's own page. I don't know if it is intended that way, but I'm assuming this is an oversight. --70.184.239.162 23:22, 14 May 2010 (UTC)
- It's an oversight. I've marked the page as incomplete so we remember to add it at some point. Thanks for pointing that out! rpeh •T•C•E• 08:24, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
