Dying

Can the Molag Bal Or Sheogorath's Protection be used beneficially? What exactly do these glitches eliminate? Are they simply your attribute or skill bonuses for your racial/sign choices? Do your skills disappear? What about your racial/birthsign weaknesses?

I ask because it may be possible to manipulate this beneficially. If you have 100 STR and the glitch eliminates a racial -5 STR disadvantage, will you end with 105 STR? Can it eliminate other detrimental effects like the Atronoch's stunted Magicka effect or the Apprentice's 100% Weakness to magicka effect? Also for me personally I would like to get rid of the useless Racial daily skills that simply clutter my spell menu. I'd also like to do the Frostcrag Spire glitch for SIgil Stones and erase the fame points I get to create the illusion of a 'fresh' character. I've never done this glitch but I'm curious about the nuts and bolts of this.

after the quest you can go back to Melus Petilius and talk to him, he will think your a ghost and if you kill him with no bounty or infame, he drops (at lvl 25) the cursed mace and gloves of the caster and stormrider boots

The main article mentions difficulties completing the quest due to HP at Level 15, but don't you have to be Level 17 to do the quest? Is there a workaround to this I am not aware of?

I didn't know he could die of exhaustion. The first time I came to this quest I had God Mode on, and had forgotten to turn it off. He beat on me for a good 5 minutes or more and he was still going strong. Maybe the person who had him die had a reflect damage or elemental shield effect at the time? --M2pt5 15:52, 28 July 2006 (EDT)

Based on these comments, I revised the quest description when I updated the page. In particular, I suggested that reflect damage enchantments be removed, because that is clearly one way he could kill himself while attacking you. --Nephele 20:38, 6 August 2006 (EDT)
I'm sure I didn't have anything on that reflected damage, but I am level about 30. Perhaps my block is so high that just him (or anyone) hitting me gets damaged. I let a wolf attack me naked and it died before it killed me. Secondarily, there is some nice rocks here for jumping off of to hurt yourself for the fight. Thirdly, the first time he killed me, it said i was transported back, but i really wasnt. I was actually dead and the game(PC) brought up the Load Game screen. --JDHannan 20:54, 21 November 2006 (EST)
Happened to me once too... I did the quest four times (just a few moments ago :) ). First time Shadowmere killed him (might want to add as a note that you shouldn't take him along...). Second time I tried paralyzing Shadowmere to keep her out of the way (got a bug that time, look here if you want to see what happened). That time he killed me, and I spawned at the shrine without a body (there's info on the bug, but it specifies XBox... seems it exists on PC versions too [I have the latest patch btw]). I think he knocked me down or paralyzed me, not sure, but when I respawned, my movement was very... weird. Drunken movement is the most accurate description I can offer :). Third time he killed me and Loading screen popped up. Fourth and final time, I loaded a save in front of the shrine, started the quest again, left Shadowmere back at the shrine and got there on foot. This time it went without a hitch. What I (am fairly sure) I noticed: he doesen't kill you. That's why the kill bug happens. Your health drops to almost zero and you get teleported back. I'm guessing that game watches for a percentage in Health to teleport you, but if his final blow is too hard - you die. If someone could check this theory in CS, I'd be grateful (I'd do it myself, but honestly, I don't know the first thing about it :P ) Lisan al Gaib 22:34, 8 January 2007 (EST)
In the construction set (with patch), the MolagBalScript checks to see when your health is less than 20. The script then, in order:
  • Resurrects you if your health is less than zero.
  • Resets your health
  • Stops the combat
  • Teleports you to Molag Bal's shrine
It seems possible that extreme weirdness could result if your health goes from >=20 to exactly 0. At 0 you are dead, but the script will not resurrect you. If your health goes from >=20 to a positive value less than 20 I wouldn't imagine anything strange happening; you never die, the only modification made to your character's stats is that your health is reset. If your health goes negative, there could also be odd effects from dying and being resurrected... this may be when people report things like losing birthsigns or other abilities.
As a result, I think this quest is probably safest when Petilius does relatively little damage per hit (i.e., less than 20 points per hit), ensuring that your health doesn't go 0 or negative. I'll have to do more research to figure out Petilius' damage, but it probably comes out to low levels are best. --Nephele 23:47, 8 January 2007 (EST)
Figuring out the damage was less work than I expected: using the Cursed Mace (base damage 10), Petilius should do at most 10.6 points of damage (at 100 strength, 100 blunt). Which makes me wonder how people are getting single hits for more than 10 points of damage. Any chance you're poisoning the mace or otherwise making it easier for Petilius to quickly kill you? Or is Petilius getting multiple hits in quickly enough that the game isn't checking your health after each hit? I'd be interested in figuring this out so we can make some solid recommendations about how to avoid hitting glitches on this quest. Does anybody feel like being a guinea pig and letting Petilius kill your character a few times in a row? --Nephele 00:09, 9 January 2007 (EST)
Sure thing :). Just tell me what am I to watch for, I've got a savegame right in front of him. Btw, about him doing more damage... Could it be tied to Difficulty setting maybe? I'm on default (no idea what it's labeled, I never changed difficulty, in Morrowind or Oblivion :) ), he could be doing more damage than player can actually do. Oh and what creature were you testing it on? When I was doing the quest, I wasn't wearing any armor (Dark Brootherhood robe and hood, took off my shield, so no armor rating; no shield spells either or anything simmilar). Also, when he killed me, I'm fairly sure that the last hit was a power attack, so count that in too. I'll add more things if I remember. As I said, if you want me to do some testing, just tell me how and I'll do it. Lisan al Gaib 10:34, 9 January 2007 (EST)
Thanks for all the great ideas :) The number I gave was just from the construction set and standard equations. The difficulty setting could definitely do it (although not in your case, since you say you're at default); increasing the difficulty setting will make all opponents do more damage, up to six times more at maximum difficult. So that could cause damage as high as 60. The power attack is also a good point... I'm not aware of anyone figuring out how much more damage is done by a power attack, but twice as much seems very possible. If you feel like playing around and testing some things, it would be interesting to confirm that the quest is non-buggy as long as your health stays above 0, but is buggy when it goes to 0 or less (or is that already pretty clear to you from your earlier tests?). And you could see just how much damage Petillius does per strike (i.e., just pull up the menu and keep track of your exact health after each hit). But the suggestions you gave already provide enough possibilities for how he could do more than 20 points/strike, so it all seems to be making sense to me. If you want to take a stab at starting to summarize the key facts and adding this to the main page (perhaps in a "Bugs" section), go for it! --Nephele 11:52, 9 January 2007 (EST)
Ok, I've done the testing. At default difficulty setting, Petilius deals about 7-11 dmg with the mace, but can do 21-32 dmg when using a power attack, which can easily lead to him killing you, especially on higher difficulty settings. However, this test was done with no armor, and no Resistance to Normal Weapons (had to cure my vampirism to get the right results :P ; wasn't hard though, just a short trip to Deepscorn Hollow ;) ). I assume Bethesda overlooked this problem because they were expecting that at level 15 (or is it 17?) or up you would have enough armor rating to reduce his dmg below 20. I've added in my results, as well as rewording (was in 1st person) and moving (to Bugs) mention of bug with losing bonuses and body. I've also added a note about taking someone with you. If anyone wants me to test something else about this quest, just post here or on my talk page, I've made a special save (named it Molag Bal testing), so I can load it any time. Lisan al Gaib 11:35, 10 January 2007 (EST)

Thanks for confirming those damage amounts, and making the edits to the page. I made some changes, in part adding a few more details because I think those details will help other players to avoid the bug; I also moved the whole health description to the top of the bugs section because I'm willing to bet that it's the cause of all the other bugs that people have reported. As for why Bethesda overlooked this, my guess is that they did the same quick math that I started with, decided that Petilius would do at most 10.6 damage/hit, and went from there... overlooking power attacks and difficulty settings. But of course, we're all just speculating when it comes to "why" :) I just think it's great that your keen eye let us figure out what the bug really is here, so we can say something more substantial than "sometimes it's buggy, sometimes it's not". --Nephele 12:27, 10 January 2007 (EST)

*Blushes at reading the keen eye part and thanks Nephele* :). Hope to do more work on this wiki, I just recently joined (I was unfortunate to first stumble upon this wiki during the holidays, while the server was down, so I thought it was an old, long forgotten site... (active since 1995 didn't help either ;P )) Lisan al Gaib 12:45, 10 January 2007 (EST)

Dialogue

Because I can never fully understand what the daedric lords are saying, I decided to use my new construction set abilities to find the dialogue, and add it to the quest. Does anyone else think this is useful? Should I do it for the other daedric quests, too? --Nephele 20:36, 6 August 2006 (EDT)

Well I can usually understand them (and I have subtitles on anyway, so it's never a problem), but it's not a bad idea to have that info available on the pages, if nothing for the encyclopedic value. Also tbh, I would love to have a handy info on Sheogorath's dialogue, I LOVE the "I could turn you into a..." part :) Lisan al Gaib 20:02, 19 January 2007 (EST)
I wouldn't mind the dialogue being here, and as far as playing with the subtitles turned on, when I did the Azzura's Star quest I didn't get subtitles when she spoke... I was quite surprised, because this is the only spoken dialogue that I've heard that wasn't subtitled. I sometimes play without sound so I can listen what my daughter is up to... so when I activated the statue at first I thought nothing happened (there is no visual indication that the statue is speaking.) I haven't done any of the other shrine quests, but assumed they were similar... or was this just a weird one time bug? Vilhazarog 17:56, 13 February 2007 (EST)
By selecting general subtitles in Gameplay, it's pretty easy to identify what the Daedric Lords are saying. But I see where you're coming from..--Hicky 06:08, 25 February 2007 (EST)
Ther IS a visual indication telling you when the Lord speaks, you go into cutscene, your interface is gone and you can not move;) - Korunox 14:31, 19 February 2008 (EST)

Bonus Loss

(moved from notes) I lost all the bonuses from the Night Mother's Blessing and the Skeleton Key as well. Saving, dropping, etc. don't work for the Key. Are there an ways to resolve all these glitches at once?

i also have this exact problem, at first my character wouldnt even apear on screen, and when i checked my magical effects, all of them are gone except for the ones from my armor. that means that even my race bonuses. sign bonus, ect. all gone. i guess i have to load a previous save from three levels ago :'( always make back-up saves... — Unsigned comment by Nemesi609 (talkcontribs)

personality attribute

I checked my attributes just after accepting the Molag Bal quest and before getting the lion pelt, and noticed that my personality whic was at 95 was slowly degrading. Restore personality spells and potions dont restore my attribute neither will a visit to a chapple alter.

Anyone have any ideas to solve this problem?

Steve

Are you sure it was because of the quest? I never heard of anything simmilar happening... When you say "was slowly degrading", do you mean like it kept going down? Like a Damage over Time on an Attribute? Cause there's no spell that does Damage Attribute in game, only enchantments. Check your Spell Effects page to see if the damage is there and see what's the source (name of "spell"), it might help in understanding what caused it. Also, is your Personality red (when it's red, it means it's been/being damaged)? Lisan al Gaib 10:10, 31 January 2007 (EST)

Chameleon

When I went to Melus Petilius he had a weak chameleon (20%?) on. I didn't see this in the article, was this noticed by anyone else? --The-evil-bucket

It's probably that one of his randomly selected pieces of armor happened to have a chameleon enchantment. There's nothing in his inventory or spell list that would give him a guaranteed chameleon ability. --NepheleTalk 01:45, 20 June 2007 (EDT)
Cuirass of the Ranger (25% Chameleon) at levels 17-21, and whatever the Glass one is after that. For both sets he has a 1 in 4 chance of Chameleon. It does make it significantly harder to see when he's actually out praying, and that's a high enough probability that this should probably be in the main page's notes. — Unsigned comment by Aliana (talkcontribs) on 13 October 2008
The chance is much smaller than 1 in 4. You missed the "Calculate for each item in count" checkbox on his cuirass leveled list. It means that at level 22+ (for instance) he has a 3 in 10 chance of having his armor come from the magic list which then has a 6 in 25 chance of being a Chameleon version. That gives a combined result of 9 in 125 or 7.2%. It still might be worth mentioning though. –RpehTCE 07:42, 13 October 2008 (EDT)
I'm no good with leveled lists (the concept's trivial, but the CS is too awkward to actually see the possible trees) but since the PC will be at least 17 and he's PC+0, doesn't that mean only the Elven and Glass are options? (in which case the second part is 2 in 8, though that's only a trivial difference - I'm just curious if I'm understanding them properly).
The reason I followed up on the Chameleon comment is that it happened to me, and if you go to the house (which is the marker) and look over at the grave, you can't see him at all. So you check inside the house, which is empty (I happened to get there at 10:20), go back outside and start waiting, and so on. I only found him by accident, casting Detect Life because Shadowmere had gone walkabout. :P It seems a bit backwards to have the generic noise about using him for skill training in the main notes section, but hide something that can have a direct and problematic impact on the quest away in here. — Unsigned comment by Aliana (talkcontribs) on 13 October 2008
It's not required for him to wear Elven or Glass armor just because he's at least level 17. The scripts randomly pull armor from leveled lists, so there's not a 100% chance that he will wear Elven or Glass. I play on the 360, and when I did it he was wearing Mithril. But regardless, Detect Life will work if you can't find him. I did this quest on two characters, one at level 17 and one at level 25, and both times he was completely visible and wearing unenchanted Mithril.--Penguin0719 09:45, 13 October 2008 (EDT)
Thanks. I was wondering if he had whatever flag it is that makes Mazoga etc always have the "best possible" gear for their level, but I couldn't find where it was in the CS to see if he did. — Unsigned comment by Aliana (talkcontribs) on 13 October 2008
As you've probably worked out by now, Mazoga's leveled lists don't have the "Calculate for each item in count" flag, so it's always the highest leveled one. I must confess I'm not 100% sure how the lists work either - even for ones like Melus Petilius', NPCs are more likely to get higher-leveled items so it's obviously not checking ALL the items. You can see high level bandits with glass, elven or mithril, for instance, but never fur - at least, I've never seen one. Sometimes I wish Bethesda would publish a definitive guide to how it all works! –RpehTCE 06:21, 14 October 2008 (EDT)

Cursed Mace

I've moved the following comments here from the bugs section of the article:

the latest patch evidently makes the cursed mace weigh nothing, and so is unremovable from your inventory.

and

sometimes you cannot drop the cursed mace (the quest tag does not update). if this happens, you can reset the tag using the console: Open the console with ` or ~ and type: setquestobject 26F98 0 Press Enter, close console. Should work then.

The Cursed Mace is never set to be a quest object, so I'm not sure what is the cause of the glitch being encountered by this editor. Given that the Cursed Mace has to be dropped to complete this quest, I'm sure other people would have reported it if problems preventing the Cursed Mace from being dropped were widespread. I think some explanation of why the Cursed Mace would ever become a quest object, and some idea of whether this is a problem that has ever occurred to other players, would be necessary before this information needs to be included in the article. --NepheleTalk 03:05, 22 August 2007 (EDT)

It has been reported several times on the official forum, which is where I got the fix from. as an example, here is one of the threads it was reported in:

http://www.bethsoft.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=722043&hl=molag

note that this bug occurs even without ANY plugins installed (even the unoffical patch), and it will re-occur even if the item is removed (via the player.removeitem script) and readded (player.additem).

in cases where it occurs, the item is tagged as quest with weight 0 the moment it is given by Molag Bal.

so, yeah, it HAS been reported by other people, which is why I added the fix to the bug list.

From what I'm reading in that forum thread, I'm inclined to think that it is an error introduced by a third-party mod, given that it's only been reported by PC players who previously had installed third-party mods. Even if you uninstall all mods after adding the Cursed Mace to your inventory, that won't undo the settings for the copy of the mace that has already been created; you would have to uninstall the problem mod before starting Molag Bal's quest. Without mods I see absolutely no way for this problem to occur (and that's checking with and without all patches and all Bethesda plugins).
With an infinite number of third-party mods out there, it really doesn't make sense for UESPWiki to try to document and diagnose every glitch introduced by those mods. If you want to get this problem fixed, I'd suggest trying to figure out which mod is responsible and contacting the person who created that mod. --NepheleTalk 12:47, 22 August 2007 (EDT)

one:

I was never running any mods that modify scripts attached to items.

two:

I DID rerun the quest after removing all mods, and the result was the same.

three: how do you know it has only been reported by folks with mods? you weren't even aware of the issue to begin with.

I don't understand why you wouldn't allow the console fix for that issue to be posted, but hey, it's your work, you can take responsibility.

frankly, it confuses me why you respond like this, but whatever.

I'll post findings to the forums instead, and you can continue to miss issues all you want.

I just tried to do this quest and came here to figure out how to complete the quest since I couldn't drop the cursed mace. It was a quest item. In relation to other people, I am probably running VERY few mods. Even so, I cannot imagine any of the mods I have activated would interfere with the mace--they are pretty much all visual tweaks and time savers, nothing more. If this fix works, I will add it to the main page under Bugs. --Enterprise2001 13:22, 4 April 2008 (EDT)

Embarassing Question

Is there any way to to locate where the cursed mace is. What happened is....I was VERY new to the game and didn't know you could put items in containers...so i brought everything around with me...and i decided to drop it (or sell it in which case im screwd) and now...i Can't remember where i put it. im on the 360, is there anyway to recover or find out where i put it? thanks--Piercethetruth 04:59, 22 November 2007 (EST)

You were very new to the game, so new you still didn't know at lvl 17 that you could place things in containers? seems very unlikely to me, but I dont think there is a way to get it back, except loading a previous savegame, if you can fnd one in which you still had the mace.

I'm someone else, but I seem to have misplaced the mace somewhere. I thought it would be a good idea to leave it in a cupboard in his house, and now it's gone from said cupboard. Is this possible or am I going insane? — Unsigned comment by 212.182.181.48 (talk)

I assume you mean the cupboard in Melus Petilus' house? Unfortunately it respawns so you've lost the mace for good. –RpehTCE 01:36, 14 May 2008 (EDT)

360 Version: I too put the mace in his cupboard because I didn't read the current quest info thoroughly (or a guide!!). I am definate I put it there owing to checking with past saves. The game has respawned and the mace is now missing. I think the mace has gone for good but if I kill Melus the game will count the shine as "completed" (albiet failed) so I will still hopefully be able to get my hands on the Oghma Infinium (much more important). I just wont be able to get the Mace of Molag Bal (the direct reward for this shrine). - xbox live: FaRzY BuTT — Unsigned comment by 82.10.69.53 (talk) on 23 September 2008

Melus Petilius' Health

I am not sure if it is worth mentioning, but right after Melus talks to you, before he begins combat, his health is set back to his character's original health of 97. I am guessing that this is part of his curse, but it makes it so that his character always appears with low health. As you level his health will go up since he is leveled offset from the player, but he will continue to be seen as having damaged health for the rest of game.--Shalley303 17:00, 26 March 2008 (EDT)

Chokeberry

Is it possible to totally remove the effect of a socalled 'Chokeberry' or 'Poison Apple' Since I read all the script effects, including certain buffs like the night mother's blessing would get removed, since Chokeberry & Poison apple are one of these script effects - I would imagine they would get removed too, and if you're lucky you can get your character restored if you're on the Xbox or PS3?

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Eolath

I may be on the PC, but my understanding was that these effects were supposed to kill a character, so having them wear off could result in higher-level characters actually surviving the effects. If you have god mode on, it is unlikely that you will be able to remove the effects. If you do not have god mode on, and the effects are not having any effect on you, then it is likely to be a glitch. My reasoning is likely to be incorrect, so if anyone else can correct me, please do. --HMSVictoryTalk 15:17, 13 May 2008 (EDT)

Getting Petilius to attack

One of the notes on the wiki page for this quest says that you can use frenzy to get Petilius to attack you without causing damage to him. I tried this many times, and every time he killed me, I died. No loading screen, no quest complete. After a long and frustrating time I figured out that you have to actually attack him (with a weapon) in order to trigger his dialogue and allow yourself to be resurrected when you die. I didn't want to go and call someone else's note wrong based purely on my experience, so how should I best modify the page? — Unsigned comment by 80.197.36.148 (talk) on 11 September 2008

I've added a verification tag and pointed it here. Usually a post on the talk page is the best way to flag up that there's a problem, so thank you! –RpehTCE 00:55, 12 September 2008 (EDT)
I tested it myself and you're right. Frenzy will get him to attack you but you don't get transported to the shrine afterwards. I've removed the line from the article. –RpehTCE 04:14, 13 September 2008 (EDT)

Can't get him to attack me with the cursed mace

I've tried everything that I can think of, but can't get him to use the cursed mace. I am careful to put it between him and the tombstone (and have tried other spots around the area). I hit him with a weapon or spell, but he always uses the mace on his belt. I've tried lowering his disposition to zero by using the disposition minigame, to no avail. I've tried at least 30-40 times now. Any ideas? 68.231.222.118 01:44, 9 January 2009 (EST)

He shouldn't have a weapon of any kind, which is why he picks up the one you drop. Okay, patronising question first: are you sure you've got the right person? If so you're going to have a problem. Are you on the PC or a console? –RpehTCE 12:15, 9 January 2009 (EST)
Yes, I'm sure its the right person. I'm on a PC, using several mods, including Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul; perhaps that mod gives him a weapon? I've finished the main quest and am level 24. I have Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles installed too.

Frankly, I'm ready to use the console command to fix this. I guess I could set the quest stage to 100, then give myself the Mace of Molag Bal using the console too, right? Thanks for your help! 12.156.44.5 18:47, 9 January 2009 (EST)

If you're on the PC, you could click on him then run removeallitems from the console. That'll take his armor too, but if you want you could add some back using additem id - get the ids from the Armor page. Hopefully, that will make him pick up the mace and let the quest continue as usual. –RpehTCE 03:06, 10 January 2009 (EST)

I realize this is six months too late to help this user, but for future readers, I had the same problem, using OOO mod, and was able to solve it without any console commands... just use disintegrate spells/scrolls on his weapon until it's destroyed, then he'll pick up the cursed mace. --Vilhazarog 22:39, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

I used a silence spell on him and it worked perfectly, then i just held my shield out the entire time so i gained a bunch of points in my block skill. 7:27 P.M. March 8th 2011

Petilius dies when he fights me?

Everytime i go to his wife's grave I place down the mace and punch him to provoke him. Okay so everything goes fine as he picks up the mace and starts to attack me. I just stand there and let him attack me, and suddenly he dies? Baring in mind i took off all of my weapons and armour so how could he hurt himself? This also happened when I held my shield up to build up my block skills he died from punching the shield (When he didnt have the mace equipped). — Unsigned comment by 92.21.128.150 (talk) on 10 June 2009

You had to have had something on with Reflect Damage. --74.5.177.164 22:42, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

I had him lose health too during this quest, and I had nothing equiped.

It did not happen other playthroughs and the only difference I can think of is that I was a vampire this time. I was able to keep him alive with restore health on touch and the quest proceeded as normal from there.

This is a bit stupid but...

Anyone have a fixed location on a mountain lion or its pelt? i have already done the rat problem quest so don't use that. Thanks. --SneakyPenguin77 (also my Gamertag) 20:16, 5 October 2009 (UTC)

You might run into invisible mountain lions outside Fort Caractacus and the can appear as opponents for Arena Grand Champions between level 9 and 11. Dlarsh(Talk,Contribs,E-mail) 20:21, 5 October 2009 (UTC)
I appreciate your input but im too high for the arena and i looked at Fort Caractus and only got invisible bears, ill check there again but im not optimistic about it --SneakyPenguin77 (also my Gamertag) 20:56, 5 October 2009 (UTC)
I can usually find one or two wandering the fields north of Anvil as well, or in Muck Valley Cavern during the Dark Brotherhood quest Next of Kin if that helps. The arena and fighters guild are the only places that guarantee an encounter though. Dlarsh(Talk,Contribs,E-mail) 21:08, 5 October 2009 (UTC)
I believe several merchants occasionally sell them. While they are not fixed locations, you should never run out of lion pelts. Talk Wolok gro-Barok Contributions 07:16, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

what if i killed melus petilius earlier in the game? is there any way to complete this quest? if i dont complete it, can i still complete the Hermaeus Mora shrine quest? — Unsigned comment by 74.193.65.26 (talk) on 11 March 2010

You cannot do that without the use of mods as he is essential until the quest is begun.--Corevette789 22:55, 11 March 2010 (UTC)
You're right, sorry... i actually killed all the npc's that live at brindle home, so how do i find melus petilius? — Unsigned comment by 74.193.65.26 (talk) on 11 March 2010
I figured it out, thanks for the help — Unsigned comment by 74.193.65.26 (talk) on 12 March 2010

Soul trap myself

i was wondering if anyone knows if it would be possible to soul trap myself since you die in the quest without reloading, i thought maybe if you somehow made Petilius reflect spell and you used soul trap on him which would reflect back on you, and when you die you might have a filled soul gem? Mor'tar'iit 09:21, 8 May 2010 (UTC)

I'm not sure if its possible to have the spell effect on you, but I know that if you actually do die, a filled black soul gem isnt worth it. You lose all your bonuses. Usually you just get down to a little lower than 20. Its stated in the notes section, but the notes list is long on this page :P Mikeyboy52 20:50, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

Oh okay ^_^ i think it is possible to have the effect on you because when i was fighting umbra she kept soul trapping me, and i know it wouldnt be worth it, its just the novelty of it ^_^ lol-ness

While it is possible to cause yourself to be soul trapped, your soul would be given to your enemy, not yourself. You could possibly cause Petilius to have spell reflection by reverse-pickpocketing a zero-weight item with a reflect spell enchantment into his inventory. Since this guy doesn't have black soul gems and it's not possible to reverse-pickpocket them onto him, he wouldn't be able to trap your soul, anyway. --Tenraah 01:37, 17 July 2010 (UTC)

Petilius Shield

I found this item in one of the Eyleid ruins south of the Imperial City, but could not pick it up. Perhaps after completing this quest? Also, I do not know if the shield is there in the basic game, or in the Martens Monster Mod, or Obscuros Oblivion Overhaul. — Unsigned comment by 83.248.226.247 (talk) at 21:54 on 25 August 2010

That's from OOO. I've never used it, but Googling it found a number of hits, hopefully one of those can help you. Robin Hoodtalk 22:37, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

How did I get through this quest bug (PC only).

So we all know about this really annoying bug, do we? Of course, I know that it might be worthless tip, but it worked for me (yes, I was very desparate to get through this bug and not lose any bonuses). I put the Mace near Melus, provoked him to attack me with it, and I did not let him kill me. Instead, I opened the console and typed setstage DAMolag Bal 60. Appriopriate entry appeared in my journal. I was not teleported back to Molag Bal's shrine (even though my journal said something absolutely different), I had to return there myself. And so I did. And I received Mace of Molag Bal. So I actually completed this quest and I didn't lose any bonuses granted to my character. I hope I won't be blamed for doing such thing and instead some players will find this tip useful.

removed bug

this is the bug I jsut removed: *On PC On PC, if necessary it is possible to bypass being killed entirely and yet still complete the quest. After Melus Petilius makes his first strike against you, setstage DAMolag Bal 60 may be entered into the console followed by clicking Melus' body (still within the console) and typing stopcombat. The player may then return manually to the shrine and the quest should continue as normal.

    • When Melus' body is clicked correctly, his name and RefID should appear in white at the top of the screen.

I thought the bug relied too heavily on console commands to truly be considered a bug. --Pwnageincarnate 01:55, 15 January 2011 (UTC)Pwnageincarnate

Is that even a bug? It seems like if you did this you are just skipping the combat, I would describe it as more as a workaround for people who want to avoid the fight (considering how easily that fight can bug up the rest of the game). It might be worthwhile to move it to notes, if something like that isn't already there. Alpha Kenny Buddy 02:13, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

He's right, it's not a bug but a workaround. However, its a workaround to no bug in particular which is why it appears out of place in the section. The information itself is worth keeping somewhere in the article as a final solution if the quest keeps bugging up. It may need to be reworded to fit better into the bugs section or otherwise, yes, integrated into the notes somehow. --RaidensTechSupp 05:47, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

Reworded and popped into Notes. Should be better now. RaidensTechSupp 15:25, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

Velas grave

Can someone please put a map with a marker on Velas grave? It's not very Obvious and it might make this quest easier to complete. Thank you :) oh and the times Petilius is at the grave? I think it's 11am-3pm — Unsigned comment by 86.173.36.161 (talk) on 16 January 2011

Done. The times are already on the article. rpeh •TCE 15:11, 16 January 2011 (UTC)

Moved notes

    • When Melus' body is clicked correctly, his name and RefID should appear in white at the top of the screen.

I've been pruning the notes sections all over the site. Feel free to re-add any of these with a just cause. --AKB Talk 15:51, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

Removed Bug

  • It is possable that upon ariving at the shrine (PS3 only) there will be a lapse in the code that trigers a instant respawn upon near death, even if the quest has not been started. If you are killed by Petilius or kill him without starting the quest, when you do start the quest, you will fail it instantly. It is then immpossable to earn the mace of Molag Bal.
    • Reloading is needed if you want to complete the quest.

I've removed this from the bugs section. The 'lapse in the code' and 'PS3 only' parts sound distinctly wrong. It looks like a one-off to me, perhaps caused by a scratched disc. I've moved it here in case anyone wants to test it out, as I don't have the PS3 version myself. Legoless 22:53, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

/* Removed from article */

*On Xbox It is possible that Petilius will not pick up the mace if he has another weapon. When this happens you will fail the quest.

I need confirmation of this.--Iamgoofball 04:10, 1 June 2011 (UTC)
