Arena souls

I tried using Hermaeus Mora's Soul Trap on guys in the Arena, but they seemed to be immune to it, contrary to the tip on the article suggesting that one collect the souls for this quest in the Arena. If anyone can confirm, then they should remove that from the article.

For some reason I can't start the quest I've done everything the guide says as requirements. So whats wrong?

For some reason I can not seem to capture an orc soul, I am guessing this has to do with their magicka resistance, any input?

Pretty sure that is a bug, I got this with the Khajiit once. I fixed it by loading an old save and doing it all over again. --Cyjoki 00:13, 11 May 2006 (EDT)

Err, is it Hermaeus More or Hermaeus Mora? And I didn't even started the quest yet sorry. (anyone who posted the message above wasn't me)--Thaimodz 06:04, 30 April 2006 (EDT)

Isnt is Hermaeus Mora? I was just playing and thats what I saw. --Cyjoki 23:14, 11 May 2006 (EDT)
I sent the Site Owner an email to try to get it fixed. --Cyjoki 22:33, 16 May 2006 (EDT)
You know you can just move the page yourself to fix the name? Moving it now anyway... — EndarethTalk 23:17, 16 May 2006 (EDT)
Nope, didn't know that. Fairly new to wiki, you see. Thanks for the information and thanks for fixing it. --Cyjoki 23:33, 16 May 2006 (EDT)

Hm, i was pretty sure that The Path of Steel granted a +10 Endurance bonus rather than speed, and it was the Path of Shadows which gave the +10 Speed bonus, can anyone clarify this? LeifHawk 14:02, 10 May 2006 (EDT)

I added a bug, and consolidated all of them at the bottom of the page. --Cyjoki 00:13, 11 May 2006 (EDT

Arena souls

I tried using Hermaeus Mora's Soul Trap on guys in the Arena, but they seemed to be immune to it, contrary to the tip on the article suggesting that one collect the souls for this quest in the Arena. If anyone can confirm, then they should remove that from the article.

I successfully used the arena souls. You must have cast the spell twice to acquire the bug or something

Requirements?

Must you be *exactly* at the point in the main quest where Martin asks for an artifact? --Turns out that no, you needn't be exactly there. I had completed the main plotline and was able to get the quest.

It states that one must be "at least" to the artifact stage. That means any point after works too.

Deleted Text

I moved this note here from the main page; it needs to be rewritten to not be in first person and also needs confirmation of what allowed the quest to be started. --Nephele 22:08, 3 December 2006 (EST)

Note: I was adamante I would not be able to start this quest (having read various walkthroughs saying that i needed to complete all the other Daedric quests first), as the infamous Clavicus Vile quest glitch had happened, meaning that i was unable to complete it, however, whilst exploring the bandit infested fort Cedrian (and still not having found a Clavicus quest fix), i was approached and given a message alowing me to start hermaeus mora's quest. Not sure if this was a bug or a scripting error but it meant that I could complete this quest despite the annoying glitch from Clavicus.

Completing Other Daedric Quests

It is NOT imperative for the player to have had completed all of the other 14 daedric quests as myself among others, have been able to trigger the quest start whilst not being able to workaround the Clavicus Vile quest glitch. The frequency of this happening to various people has, for me, become to high for it to be a coincidental scripting error. Although open to debate i stand by the fact (having seen it twice removed from this page) that Hermaeus Mora's quest is in fact possible without the completions of the other daedric Lords.

I'd like to understand more clearly what exactly is happening here, instead of just having an ambiguous comment that the quest can sometimes be triggered without doing the requirements. In several other cases, it's been possible to work out enough of the details to provide readers with some concrete tips about what to do (or not to do) to deal with a bug. I'd like to see if that's possible, in this case, too.

I've changed the notes to provide some more details on what the requirements are according to the Construction Set. In particular, in most cases failing the quest still counts as a "completed" quest. So Clavicus Vile counts whether you give him Umbra or whether you tell him that you're keeping it yourself. But it's not obvious how you should be able to get to Hermaeus Mora's quest without either successfully completing the other quests or officially failing them. Before starting Hermaeus Mora, a counter ("DAHermaeusMora.questcount") must be set to 14: each Daedric quest increments that counter by 1 when completed. So either Clavicus Vile's quest has indeed incremented the counter, or somehow another quest is being counted twice (which would be just as hard to understand). (And I checked these scripts both in the unpatched and in the patched version of the game; there's no change).

Also, I did a series of tests in game of the requirements before starting Hermaeus Mora's quest myself. Based on my tests, the listed requirements on this page are accurate. In particular, if I went to Hermaeus Mora's shrine with Umbra but without having returned to Clavicus Vile's shrine, I could not start the quest. But just by going back to Clavicus Vile's shrine, doing either dialogue option, then returning to Hermaeus Mora, the requirements were met. So I definitely had to finish that quest to proceed.

To figure out what's going on here, it would be useful to have more details on what exactly is meant by "not being able to workaround the Clavicus Vile quest glitch". Do you mean that the Clavicus Vile quest is still listed as an active quest? If so, what was the last quest update that you received?

Unattainable Race Bug

I had run into the bug where you can't trap the soul of certain races (argonian, breton, and dunmer for me) and I noticed it too late to recover so I've been trying to capture them anyway, and I think I found a workaround. Casting the spell on a target I know it will work on (I test them all by casting it twice to see if it tells me they're already affected, then wait an hour for it to wear off) then casting it on another target it hasn't worked on previously does not give me the "You may only trap one..." message, but casting it on them again gives the "This person is already..." message. After killing them I gain their soul for the quest. I've reproduced the effect several times. Could anyone else confirm this? -- Thruen

I also had this problem with the bosmer, argonian, and khajiit races. I tried what Thruen said but it didn't work for me I never got a message saying this target couldn't be soul trapped, I cant soul trap more then one target, or this target has already been soul trapped. What I did was I found the race I need and I soul trapped them and one hit KO them in about one or two seconds after the soul trap. I may have has this bug with other races but I don't know because I did this with most the races to avoid trouble with the guards. Also could anyone confirm this? -- Nines Templar

The Bugs

I'm being bitten badly by the bugs in this spell on a PS3 and I would really love to be able to figure out how to work around them. The various methods outlined seem to not help at all. In the end it just seems to be very arbitrary and fickle, I'll need to kill a lot of NPCs to get my ten souls. Restoring from a saved game before I started this quest is not a real solution, it just means I have to go through the pain again and again until it works.

Let me get this straight, if you cast the spell on two NPCs within two minutes, it breaks and the fix is to cast it on two NPCs within two minutes? How do I tell that it has failed due to the bug, so that I don't end up triggering the bug while trying to fix it? Could it fail due to magic resistance? Could it fail because I can't tell the difference between bosmer and altmer, and I already have an altmer? Could it fail if I'm not lucky enough? Does it make any difference if I killed (captured or not) the previous NPC it was cast on?

Basically I'm not getting any feedback from the spell that will help determine what is going wrong. I kill lots of NPCs of the races that I still don't have. I cast it on inanimate objects or already captured races every now and then to try to fix the bug. I get no feedback when casting it on races I have already. I get no feedback when casting it twice on the same NPC. It appears that it's just an extremely unreliable spell, I'll only capture a soul when it damn well feels like it. I'm spending all day killing NPCs in the hopes that I might get a soul.

So far I have captured breton, altmer, khajiit, nord, and redguard. I had managed to capture a bosmer, but I needed to revert to a saved game for other reasons and have not managed a bosmer since. Or I have only killed altmers since, I don't know, I can't tell the difference.

I hope that someone with a PC and access to the construction set and console might be able to sort out the hopelessness that is this bug ridden spell and shed some more light on it for us all. Onefang 07:40, 5 June 2007 (EDT)

I'm working on trying to figure out the scripting for this quest, but I need to do some more testing to be sure of some of the details. In the meantime, I thought I'd give you some answers to some of the other questions. I hit this bug right away when I did this quest, so I know it can be frustrating, but I also know that it's possible to finish the quest with the bug.
  • Yes, this spell is very bad about giving you feedback about what happened, and that in and of itself is the main reason why this bug is so annoying to deal with
  • The spell will not fail based upon luck or magic resistances. However, it will fail if you happen to cast it at nothing instead of casting it at a target (which is kind of like real-life luck, instead of in-game luck)
  • The spell will fail (i.e., do nothing, without telling you why) if it takes you more than 2 minutes to kill your target, from the time you first cast the spell. So weaken your targets to the point where you can kill them in one or two hits, then cast the spell. If you need to, set the difficulty slider to minimum so you can kill them as quickly as possible.
  • The spell will fail (i.e., do nothing, without telling you why) if you kill a NPC of a race that you have already captured. To deal with that, you can take steps to make absolutely sure that you know the target's race.
    • If it's a named NPC, pull up the NPC's page on this site and see what the race is
    • For unnamed NPCs, focus on the ones listed at Souls of all Races. So if your target is a necromancer, conjurer, or marauder battlemage, then there's no chance he's a bosmer, because NPC spellcasters are never bosmers; if he's an elf, then he's an altmer. Bandit bowmen are your best chance for bosmers. Track down marauders, because a lot of your missing races are found as marauders.
  • Whether or not you killed the last target doesn't matter... just be sure to wait the full two minutes until the last spell cast has expired.
  • One way to maximize your chances of getting around the bug is to find two NPCs, both of whom are of races that you need to capture. Cast the spell on one of the NPCs, then immediately cast it on the second NPC, and kill them both (be sure to kill them in less than two minutes!) If you're bugged, you'll get the second NPC's soul; if you're not bugged, you'll get the first NPC's soul. Either way, you get a soul you need, and (if they're different races) you can even figure out from the quest update message whether or not you really are bugged.
Hopefully some of that info helps. And also I'll spend some more time messing with the scripting to figure out more definitively what happens once you have the bug. --NepheleTalk 23:12, 5 June 2007 (EDT)

Can't start quest

I'm level 29, I've completed all of the other Daedric quests, and I've already sacrificed an artifact in the main quest, yet Ri'Jirr still tells me I have not followed the required path. Nor do I encounter Casta Flavus. Could there be a requirement that was never noticed or am I experiencing some kind of glitch? — Unsigned comment by 75.68.134.170 (talk)

Did you successfully complete Malacath and Namira's quests? If you don't finish those quests the right way then you will never be able to qualify to do Hermaeus Mora's quest (see Notes). --NepheleTalk 22:35, 21 June 2007 (EDT)
  • Sorry, I just realized I didn't do the Molag Bal quest. For some reason I keep mixing that up with the Malacth quest. Maybe because they both reward you with blunt weapons or something.--75.68.134.170 00:40, 22 June 2007 (EDT)

I am a level 21 and have completed all of the required quests, I kept umbera but the quest is done, I went and I talked to him. But I still cant start the quest it says I have not followed the path any help?

Pronunciation

How do you pronounce Hermaeus Mora?--GJPal 13:12, 23 July 2007 (EDT)

I don't know the proper pronunciation symbols but a rough guide would be "Her-may-us More-Ah". --RpehTalk 06:03, 24 July 2007 (EDT)

Bug Fixed?

This bug is fixed in the Xbox 360 version with the 1.2.1 patch. If you cast the spell on the same character twice, and it will give you a message stating the spell has already been cast. If you cast it on another character immediately after capturing a soul, it will still work properly.

This note was added to the bugs section, but I can find no evidence this is true. First, I know for sure that the bug occurs on Xbox 360 with with 1.1.511 patch because it happened to me. Second, there have been absolutely no changes to any of the scripts related to Hermaeus Mora with any of the subsequent patches. So there is no way for the bug to have been fixed. If you happened to get away once with casting the spell twice on the same NPC, just consider yourself lucky. But I'd want a lot more evidence than a single example before I'd even be willing to spend the time double checking it myself on my Xbox. --NepheleTalk 11:44, 1 August 2007 (EDT)

If this is a new patch as of the last couple of days then I don't know. At the forums we still will get a person complaining about this exact bug every once in a while, about 90% of them are Xbox 360 users. So unless bethesda says that the bug is fixed and that no more people have had it happen I wouldn't say that its fixed.--Most Honored Listener 12:41, 1 August 2007 (EDT)
Thanks for the feedback! That was my impression, too. The note mentions the 1.2.1 patch, which is the one released on April 30th, so I don't think the note is claiming that there's a new patch (and there also haven't been any new Xbox patches released... getting patches to Xbox live is a pretty big ordeal, so it's not something that could happen overnight without any advance warning). --NepheleTalk 13:01, 1 August 2007 (EDT)

Soul Trap Bug

Comment moved from main article --Eshetalk13:40, 5 October 2007 (EDT)

!!!!!! ON PS3 Version !!!!!! (if your experiencing the "bug") If you cast the Soul Trap of Mora on many different NPC's until the "you cannot trap more than one soul at a time message" STOP and then use the WAIT (select button). Then the soul trap SHOULD work the way it was intended.... Just remember that if you mess it up again to fix it Save often ;) — Unsigned comment by 76.22.254.139 (talk)

I just tested this fix and it work perfectly for me on my PS3 version. -SkiOne

This worked for me too, well done whoever figured it out. 78.145.228.56 13:23, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

On Xbox 360 I had this bug happen even now in 2010 I had 7 races but I couldn't get the last 3 for awhile... To fix I had to cast the spell on 2 npc's one after the other until I got the "you cannot trap more than one soul at a time message" then I casted on the other one after-- I got the message "this person is already under that spell message" (make sure it's the race you need on that message ) than kill and get your soul. Always save first, and as mentioned above you may have to wait 3 hours game time to line up the right npc. -— Unsigned comment by 76.23.253.29 (talk)

(ONLY TESTED ON XBOX!!)I recently ran into the soul trap problem (I couldn't trap wood elves and redguards,)however,I found that using the skull of corruption and staff of worms trick fixed my problems. Use the skull of corruption to clone the desired race you need to trap and then trap both the original and the clone (for me it was the clone who always got trapped not the original,)you should get the this person is already being soul trapped message if you hit them again. If for whatever reason it didn't work use the staff of worms to try it again.-SmokyMcSmokes

Anga

I just ran through it and didn't count, but Anga had a great variety of races among the Forgotten Ones, possibly one of each. If you're doing the Hermaeus Mora quest, you don't need to worry about failing Namira, because you would have already completed it. Is this suitable to add to the main article? --GuildKnightTalk2me 02:01, 29 December 2007 (EST)

Well, you can't quite get all ten, but you can get quite a few: the Forgotten include every race except Argonian, Dunmer, and Khajiit. Seems like it might be worth mentioning. --NepheleTalk 02:28, 29 December 2007 (EST)

PS3 Crash

(moved from the article)

  • On the PS3, the book that you receive as a reward can not be read. The game will freeze and you have to do a reboot.

I'm guessing this was just one person's experience rather than a general one. Can anybody with a PS3 confirm please? –RpehTCE 18:04, 14 January 2008 (EST)

I confirmed it with an xbox 360 so it works.
He's referring to PS3, not Xbox 360. Ong elvin 01:37, 14 February 2008 (EST)

Having same problem, even restarted entire quest, and redid all souls, and STILL crashing! No matter what you try to read from the book, it always crashes and you can't get out!

Yeah, i can confirm this, came on here just now to see if there was a fix.. i've tried all three options for reading, and nothing i do will unfreeze it except for rebooting. i also am on ps3 Scarer19 05:35, 19 April 2008 (EDT) sorry for the double posting, but i just found that if you assign the book to a shortcut key it works fine, without crashing. i tested it and it worked fine. Imperials and Bretons

This seems the most relevant place to ask the question - how do you distinguish Imperials and Bretons from each other? I can't see any physical differences. :/ Ong elvin 02:11, 29 January 2008 (EST)
Traditionally, Bretons have lighter skin than Imperials - about the same skin tone as Nords. Also, they are a slightly different size - although the size difference is not as perceptible in Oblivion as it was in Morrowind, it is still there. Breton females are shorter, while Breton males are slimmer, than their Imperial counterparts.
Technically, Breton males have a height-weight scale of 1.00-1.00 (the 'default'), while females are 0.95-0.90. Imperial males are 1.00-1.25, and females are 1.00-0.95.
--Gaebrial 02:32, 29 January 2008 (EST)
Voice and hairstyle is how I usually manage, although the first isn't much use until you're already in combat and the second isn't perfect either. I usually just kill bandits and marauders until I get what I need for this quest! –RpehTCE 02:33, 29 January 2008 (EST)
Hmm... I forgot about Nords too. Three races that look way too similar. x.x Well, at least Nord males seem to have an accent when they speak, so they're not so bad I guess. Ong elvin 04:37, 29 January 2008 (EST)
Bretons have French or French-derived names, Imperials Latin or "pseudo-Latin" names. Nords generally have light-colored hair and are considerably taller. Their names are also distinctive. Oban 06:15, 9 September 2008 (EDT)

Rockmilk Cave

That's another perfect place where you can get almost all of the 10 souls. It's located on the left side of the road between Bravil and Leyawin. It's exat location is Tamriel 19, -27. Inside you'll find a bandits and marauders. lots of them. I found all 3 kinds of elves and all humans except redguard. Besides, you get to collect about 10 black bows, tons of loot, come coll magic items and watch a good clan war. — Unsigned comment by 70.67.53.202 (talk)

Mora's Messenger?

Is it true, as I've seen mentioned on other sites but not here, that if the player completes all the other Daedric shrine quests and then sleeps, Mora will send a messenger requesting that the player visit his shrine? I haven't checked this myself but will do so soon. Oban 06:22, 9 September 2008 (EDT)

It's true, but it is mentioned on here: "Once you have met the requirements, you can head directly to the shrine if you already know from reading this article that you have met them. Otherwise, Casta Flavus will appear the next time you sleep and inform you that you are now ready to start Hermaeus' quest." –RpehTCE 06:25, 9 September 2008 (EDT)
Ah! Thanks. Sorry, read too fast and missed that. Oban 19:46, 9 September 2008 (EDT)
After he tells u to go to the shrine does he disappear because dont know where to find him-LuciusZelgius

Official Game Guide content

I'm reverting Travb's content once again, because it is quoting the game guide, specifically,

"the shrines are in remote locations, so you are unlikely to be caught. In addition, most of the worshipers are easy kills, with no armor and poor weapons, and are likely to be no more than one level above your own. And finally, since you have already completed all of the Daedric quests, these characters no longer serve any useful purpose and hence you won't kill anyone likely to come in handy in the rest of your game."

is exactly the same as the wording used in the game guide, changing "get" to "be" and a couple of other minor word substitutions. Also, this does not add any new information to the article, and implies that this method is suggested by us, which it is not. I'd rather we stick to our own guides, rather than paraphrasing another guide. --GuildKnightTalk2me 19:10, 18 October 2008 (EDT)

What if you made a note about it in the section saying that's what the official game guide says and offer it as an alternative way to do the quest? It should at least have a note somewhere in the article.--penguin0719 TalkContribs 19:24, 18 October 2008 (EDT)
It does have a note about it (and it's written in our own words); specifically, it says:
  • Daedric Shrines: Representatives of each race can be found at the various Daedric shrines, and they are generally easy kills, since most have no armor and/or weak weapons. Other than Olyn Seran at Molag Bal's shrine (who is the master trainer of Conjuration), the Daedra Worshippers no longer serve any purpose in the game.
The only new information added by the edit I reverted was that the official game guide suggests this as a way to complete the quest, which is not relevant information. --GuildKnightTalk2me 20:36, 18 October 2008 (EDT)
Guildknight, your no "new information" "adds no new information" comment is complete bullshit. You lying. The original section was written as such:
  • Daedric Shrines: Representatives of each race can be found at the various Daedric shrines. Note that Olyn Seran at Molag Bal's shrine is the master trainer of Conjuration; if you think you might ever need his services, leave him be.
See 02:40, 14 October 2008
I added a significant amount of information, and unlikely 99.9% of the material here, which cannot be confirmed one way or the other*, I provided a reference:
  • Daedric Shrines: Representatives of each race can be found at the various Daedric shrines. This is the recommended way to complete the quest, because the shrines are in remote locations, so you are unlikely to be caught. In addition, most of the worshipers are easy kills, with no armor and poor weapons, and are likely to be no more than one level above your own. And finally, since you have already completed all of the Daedric quests, these characters no longer serve any useful purpose and hence you won't kill anyone likely to come in handy in the rest of your game. The exception is Olyn Seran at Molag Bal's shrine, who is the master trainer of Conjuration; if you think you might ever need his services, leave him be. You can start by killing the Hermaeus Mora worshipers.[1]
I also attempted to compromise in my edits, changing the page to try to accommodate you, but it was either your way or the highway. You remind me of Kelly Martin on Wikipedia, who kept pushing people around until she had a vote of confidence from the community and the overwhelming majority said she wasn't fit.
"I generally do things pertaining to minute details... I've always loved intricacy and complexity, and organizing things, so that's what I do the most of."
i.e. I am a control freak, and people find me difficult to get along with.
If not quoting the guide book is simply a gut feeling, "I'd rather we not start quoting the game guide" then their is no reason to remove well referenced material.
On the other hand, maybe quoting the guide book is a rule here. I have seen time and again that every wiki community has ridiculous and absurd rules. If anyone claims reverting me is because of copyright I will shake my head in complete disgust at ignorance of copyright law. I honestly wouldn't even know where to begin to explain, and no one would listen anyway.
My apologies, all this time I thought you were simply reverting me, you weren't, you simply rewrote what I wrote:
  • Daedric Shrines: Representatives of each race can be found at the various Daedric shrines, and they are generally easy kills, since most have no armor and/or weak weapons. Other than Olyn Seran at Molag Bal's shrine (who is the master trainer of Conjuration), the Daedra Worshippers no longer serve any purpose in the game.
I am glad that despite this little revert war, I encouraged you to help me make this page better. We both got that information from the guide book, but I guess you are forcing us both to swear to secrecy and not divulge were we got our information. What a complete joke. You are wasting my time be so god damn piety.
No more reverts from me. In fact I am pretty much done with the game, and I am tired of the piety messages on my talk page from this community, so I am done with this wiki too. Travb 00:15, 20 October 2008 (EDT)
Yes, your first edit did add some new information, which is why my edit summary from my subsequent edit stated that it was a revert/reword. I incorporated the new details into the note that was already there about Daedric Representatives, specifically the bit about the armor and weapons and the worshipers serving no further purpose in the game.
Your subsequent edits only re-pasted the clip from the Official Game Guide, without adding any new info, which is why they were reverted. --GuildKnightTalk2me 01:02, 20 October 2008 (EDT)

Oghma Infinium

I've heard people saying that the reward received from this quest can be duplicated via a quest glitch. This is a glitch (among many others) that can be used to get your character up to level 300!!! I don't know how this glitch works but i can explain what to do to get it to work: complete the Hermaeus Mora quest and keep the Oghma Infinium in your inventory. Do NOT read it until you have enough Oghma books to level up as much you wish. Go into a cave where bandits will have bows and arrows, and kill them, when you try to loot the corpses they should have a Oghma book on them. This is all i know about the glitch and am going to try it as soon as i finish the quest. Verification is needed. When searching for "my level 325 xbox360 Oblivion character" a video will come up, read the description for info on this Oghma glitch. can someone please explain this glitch to me to see what causes it or any information?

P.S it may of been patched i don't know yet. --Repeater 10:27, 17 April 2009 (EDT)

The highest level you can ever possibly reach is 255, and that is without any mods that would change it

Upon trying this out on the PS3 GOTY i went to Undertow Cavern and tried it out there, (please note upon reading the description it displayed other glitches, perhaps these are necessary for the glitch to work?) my results at undertow cavern displayed no such luck. However upon doing more research there was another video which actually showed this glitch is possible as the inventory was shown to have over 200 Oghma Infinium. All was described on XBOX 360. If i create a new character and follow each and every instruction on the video perhaps the glitch can be recreated? More verification is needed for Xbox 360 and PC.--Repeater 14:09, 17 April 2009 (EDT)

which gem filled first?

if i am to capture the souls which soul gem gets filled first? does Azura's star get filled first or will Hermaeus Mora's soul gem get filled first?--Repeater 13:18, 17 April 2009 (EDT)

Well, Azura's Star cannot capture NPC souls, so they definitely won't go in there. If you have black soul gems, that might be in question, but I would guess that the special Mora's Soul Trap spell is designed to work only with Hermaeus Mora's Soul Gem. Not that I have any actual proof for that hypothesis, but it seems logical to me. Aliste 17:43, 17 April 2009 (EDT)
The two spells are different. If you use a standard Soul Trap, then your Black Soul Gems will get filled; if you use HM's soul trap, the special soul gem gets filled. If you use both on the same NPC, you're deliberately being silly. –RpehTCE 10:57, 18 April 2009 (EDT)
The special soul gem doesn't actually get filled does it? I thought it was all scripted and the game tells you that it gets filled... Because if it was a REAL soul Gem it would be in the Soul Gem part of your inventory but it isn't it is in the Misc part.. --VergilSparda 17:51, 2 April 2010 (UTC)
Yes, it's all scripted. rpeh •TCE 13:50, 3 April 2010 (UTC)

Lovecraft?

I admit this doesn't really have anything to do with the quest, but I've been wondering this and no one apparently visits Hermaeus Mora's Lore discussion page... Anyway. Do any of you guys think Hermaeus Mora might have been based on the works of Lovecraft? He has an extremely Lovecraftian design... heck, he's practically an embodiment of Lovecraftian design. Tentacles, multiple eyes, amorphous mass, sea-type features (the crab pincers). If that's not enough, Hermaeus Mora's sphere is also very Lovecraftian... endless knowledge, the stars, and in his Oblivion quest he wants his followers to "explore the nature of reality and time", or something. Hermaeus Mora's realm fits in with that endless knowledge theme, as does the Oghma Infinium. I don't know, seems like too much of a coincidence. We know Bethesda likes Lovecraft, based on the Hackdirt quest and even Mehrunes Dagon. I'm rambling a bit, but does anyone else see where I'm coming from here? 66.177.221.184 17:43, 28 April 2009 (EDT)

People have suggested this before but I don't think there's even a similarity. Compare the picture of the statue to an image search for Shub-Niggurath. You've really got to want to see it. –RpehTCE 05:39, 30 April 2009 (EDT)
But look at a Shoggoth [1]. 66.177.221.184 22:08, 1 May 2009 (EDT)
I think that Hermaeus Mora is based on Sadu-Hem from Hellboy comics, in which many creatures in the series are based on Lovecraft's ideas. 98.218.31.218 00:02, 17 June 2009 (EDT)

Level 20 seems redundant...

Since you have to be at least level 20 to complete Boethia anyway, isn't the level 20 requirement on this quest completely redundant?

It is probably in case there is a glitch that makes the game think the player has done the required amount of daedric quests but hasn't. Anelaidlives 19:07, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

Clavicus Vile/Statuette of a dog bug?

So I've completed every daedric shrine quest... Well it says that in completed quests anyway. But for some reason the Statuette of a dog from the Clavicus Vile shrine quest is still in my pack and is still saying "You can't drop a quest item from your inventory"

Any insight as to why?

well it was just probly a mess up in your game and you should have put this on the clavicus talk page--GUM!!! 23:45, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

Cannot Get to quest

A friend of mine cannot start the Hermaeus Mora quest. He has finished all of the other shrines but is told he did not follow "the path" yet.

Reveiw all of his completed quests. If you kept Umbra and never returned to the shine, do that. If you fail Melphala's quest, you can't go on. I think there are some other bugs, but overall there are many bugs in the path of this quest.--Arch-Mage Matt 22:06, 16 November 2009 (UTC)
Then it's probably because he hasn't started the Blood of the Daedra quest.--S'drassa 01:23, 17 November 2009 (UTC)

Stuck with no hope?

I've tried everything suggested here... Except the casting the spell on two souls to get one.. Mainly because all I have left to get is the breton.. I have everyone else.. Hell I had to cast it on 4 khajiit before I got that one.. I have though cast this blasted spell on countless Breton's of Necromancers, conjurers, and bandit hedge wizards... And I am still stuck. I've been through multiple ruins, caves, hideouts etc.. I even started going through the NPC list of Bretons to find one that no one would miss and I still have nothing... Does anyone have any suggestions at all? — Unsigned comment by Glyth84 (talkcontribs) on 19 February 2010, 19:37 GMT

Bug Fix or Cheat for the completed other 14 daedric quests conditon

should this console command be added to the article?

set DAHermaeusMora.questcount to 14

It can but used to fufilled the complete at the other daedric quest conditions, if one of your other dadric quests was bugged and did not update this numbe, or you failed the Malacath or Namira quests, or you want to do the Hermaeus Mora quest but skip certain other daedric quests.

Technically this would be classed as "cheating" because you are bending the rules of the game, so I don't think it would be appropriate for the article --VergilSparda 15:00, 23 April 2010 (UTC)

I have confirmed Thruen's method for soul trapping a Dark Elf. It worked for me thanks for the tip it made my headache go away!173.190.66.156 18:38, 30 June 2010 (UTC)Larry

easy way to do this?

I don't see why everyone bothers with the Forgotten Ones and Skooma Den and whatnot. Just go from daedric shrine to shrine and you will get all the races except Imperial. Go to the Hackdirt Caverns for Imperial souls. No bounty, and easy peasy. — Unsigned comment by 76.10.146.169 (talk)

Confirmation

I could use confirmation for this recent edit, that not only unconfirmed the previous post but actually reversed it.

  • Another method that might work is to keep casting it on the same target. Eventually a message will pop up saying "That person is already affected by the Hermacus Mora's Soul Trap." At this point the spell should actually be in effect.

I'm not sure why this wouldn't work per se, but I'm not really sure. --DKong27 Talk Cont 02:34, 26 March 2011 (UTC)

havent followed the path.

im level 25, completed main story line altogether (forget blood of the daedra), and have completed all 14 shrine quests- and revisited and attempted to activate all of them, but still 'have not followed the path.' this is one of the last quests left for me to complete and im sure its completely bugged out. any other recommendations? i didnt get the clavicus vile glitch. im certain ive completed all 14. and im playing on ps3.

cheers. 87.115.118.198 22:29, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

Notes section says Malacath's and Namira's quests could ruin the "path". Maybe one of those could be the problem. Other than stating that, I wouldn't know how to help. ~ Dwarfmp 01:04, 12 August 2011 (UTC)
