Enchanted Chest[edit]

Okay, the latest edit summary left me confused. Does "no research" mean the numbers that were added were just random? This still needs checking. --RpehTCE 02:29, 6 December 2007 (EST)

Mechanics of the Chest[edit]

The article states that the chest works through Julienne Fanis simply collecting the ingredients and placing them in the chest, but in-game she tells you it's through an enchantment. Now, I'd change this in the article, but I'm really not sure if it's wrong, or if I'm just missing something; it doesn't seem too far-fetched that she's really just placing the ingredients in the chest herself, and she never specifically states that the chest duplicates them itself, but I also can't find anything implying that she's doing it herself. So, is this statement fact or opinion? --NightStryke 18:46, 1 May 2008 (EDT)

You're right. Looks like bad writing on my part, although to be fair, Raminus implies that she does the collection. The exact dialogue involved is:
Julienne Fanis has long served Arch-Mage Traven in collecting alchemical ingredients for his personal research.
As the new Arch-Mage, I'm sure she'll extend the service to you as well. At your convenience, consult her at the Lustratorium.
...and then...
Ah, yes. Arch-Mage Traven was quite fond of making potions in his spare time. So much so, in fact, that it became difficult for me to meet his needs.
I finally accomodated him by enchanting a very special chest for him. You'll find it in the Arch Mage's quarters.
Once a week, place a single ingredient in the chest. After twenty-four hours, you'll find a sizable quantity of the ingredient available for use.
Do be prompt in collecting them, however. Anything left in the chest for a full week will be destroyed.
PAnd before you ask, yes this only works with ingredients. Be very careful in what you place in that chest. I can't be held responsible.
So it definitely looks like it's done by magic. I've updated the article accordingly. Thanks! –RpehTCE 18:17, 2 May 2008 (EDT)

Must wait one week?[edit]

From my own observations this seems erroneous:

Once your ingredients have multiplied, you must wait a week from the time you placed the ingredients in the chest before you can place more ingredients into it.

Can anyone confirm that it is correct? Travb 19:27, 1 October 2008 (EDT)

Erroneous, in what way? Please elaborate. --Timenn < talk > 09:39, 3 October 2008 (EDT)
My apologies for not explaining clearly. I returned after two to three days and was able to copy spell ingredients. I agree that there is at least a two day wait, but I think it is less than a week.
I may have to personally test this out this weekend. Travb 11:54, 3 October 2008 (EDT)
This happens to me as well. Kinda pathetic the limits the chest has. Some reward for becoming Arch-Mage eh?68.205.81.87 22:42, 1 April 2009 (EDT)

passing observation...[edit]

Is there any point in having a table? I'm sure I don't need to point out what's wrong with it. I would think an alphabetical list broken into columns to save space would be more practical. — Unsigned comment by 203.59.104.216 (talk) at 17:24 on 30 June 2009 (UTC)

The table is a lot better. If it was just one list, than it will be four times as long. —Elliot(T-C) 17:24, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

Unofficial Oblivion Patch[edit]

"* The enchanted chest in the Arch-Mage's quarters will now duplicate the ingredients: Cheese Wheel, Cinnabar Polypore Red Cap, Foxglove Nectar, Green Stain Shelf Cap, Orange, Potato, Root Pulp, Shepherd's Pie, and Taproot. There was no good reason why they were left out as they are neither otherworldly, nor unique in their properties, nor quest items, as other omitted ingredients are. "

IMHO, due to the wide use of UOP, it must be mentioned.94.180.10.198 00:00, 28 November 2009 (UTC)

It cannot be determined whether the missing ingredients are due to an oversight (bug), or per design. Since the default UOP notice always suggests it's a bug, I don't think it should be included. Including it would give the wrong idea. --Timenn-<talk> 10:54, 3 December 2009 (UTC)
Possibly Cinnabar and Foxglove Nectar are used in the wines at Battlehorn Castle, so maybe they wanted to limit easy access to these ingredients? But that doesn't explain why the other related ingredients are excluded. Potatoes are fairly common on farms, but again, the exclusion of them is pretty arbitrary. If you have Eyja as your maid in Skingrad or the maid from Battlehorn, you can ask for Shepherd's Pie repeatedly. Developer oversight is a distinct possibility, given how many buggy and unpolished the game is without unofficial patches. (I'm playing on 360 unfortunately) Mathiusdragoon 18:29, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

A glitch with the bread loaf[edit]

I discovered a script error in the Arch-Mage's Chest: If you place a bread loaf in the chest, it will actually create 10 carrots instead of 10 bread loaves. And because the chest will automatically empty if more than one type of ingredient is in it, this means that you will actually lose a bread loaf. Pacingpal (talk) 02:55, 29 May 2021 (UTC)
