The Wamasu (or Wamasus;[1] also called Swamp Dragons colloquially)[2] are large reptilian beasts that hail from the province of Black Marsh, though they also inhabit Craglorn and the Telvanni Peninsula. They are known for their lightning powers and tough exterior. Their existence was once largely shrouded in myth to anyone other than the Argonians.[1]
Wamasu bones are black and are said to carry electricity, which remains for several years and gives out a tingly feeling.[3] They lay eggs that emit lightning as the embryo fertilizes and grows. The eggs are ready to hatch once the lightning is gone.[UOL 1] Adult male wamasu are known to cannibalize juveniles.[4][5]
Perhaps the most famous wamasu is the legendary beast of Shadowfen, the Haynekhtnamet.[1] References to this beast date back several hundred years prior to 2E 582. The locals would provide offerings, believing that it would cease the seasonal flooding.[6]
Uses and Culture[edit]
The wamasu provide bountiful resources that are considered valuable across Tamriel, precisely their sturdy hide and their luminescent organs, which can be used in making a variety of goods, such as tarps and lanterns.[7][8][9] Native tribes of Black Marsh such as the Dead-Water Tribe and the lizard-folk of Mazzatun have weapons and armor inspired by the wamasu.[10][11] Argonian wamasu handlers utilized prods insulated with hist sap to guard against electrical discharges.[12]
Unsavory organizations have been known to procure these creatures or their eggs and keep them within dungeons.[13] The Scaled Court used these creatures to create the Mantikora.[14] Chimeras are artificial creatures with the heads of a gryphon, lion, and wamasu.[15]
Variants[edit]
Wamasu come in a variety of colors, such as green, purple, and brown. Amberdust Wamasu are a teal variety, but some speculate their color is unnatural, given to them by druidic magic.[16]
Deadlands Wamasu are a black, lava-covered variety of wamasu found in the Deadlands and sometimes sold as pets. Although they bear a superficial resemblance to the nightmare animals native to that realm, they are not Daedra. Vendors who sell these creatures claim that they are true wamasu, taken from Shadowfen to the Deadlands. Their spines project fire instead of lightning, making them fierce defenders.[17]

Notes[edit]
- Blazing Wamasu are are a type of fire-spirit, summoned and given shape by druids of the Firesong Circle on Y'ffelon.[18] They resemble Deadlands Wamasu and emit flame rather than lightning.[19]
