Warlord Vund the Stone-Shaper[1] was a skilled alchemist and the leader of a Reachfolk marauder group active in the Second Era. He led them against the Nordic settlement of Dragon Bridge.[2]

History[edit]

Hidden entrance to the caverns beneath the Dragon Bridge

At some point before 2E 582 he was presenting himself as a mercantile agent and worked with Nord smugglers as a provider of Reachfolk goods such as food, mead, and other products from Markarth. During this time he used those contacts to get closer to the Nordic settlement of Dragon Bridge in order to carry out his plan of destroying the village.[3][4] He extorted the valuable information from one of the smugglers by keeping their associates hostage and learned of the vast caverns located directly under the village, that were commonly used by the local contrabandists.[3] His marauders constantly raided caravans that were providing supplies to the garrison of the Dragon Bridge. This activity left local forces stretched thin and scrambling.[5] Disappearing caravans were soon noticed by the members of the local garrison.[6][7] Within a month prior to Vund's finding out the exact location of the caves three caravans were ransacked. With the aid of the adventurer members of the local garrison managed to identify the source of the aggression as the Reachmen.[6]

He created a powerful alchemical reagent, known as Reach Thornfire. It was explosive, volatile, and capable of dissolving stone when combined with kindlepitch.[1] Vund intended to ignite it in the caverns in order to collapse it and as such destroy the settlement built directly above it,[3] and the famous, nearby bridge above the Karth River.[8][9] They also utilized the caves as a base to launch an attack on the nearby settlement from.[2][3] His company of Reachfolk took over the caverns and killed numerous smugglers inside,[9] before venturing deeper to the tunnels and setting up explosives in strategic points,[10] on the pillars that supported the cavern's ceiling.[5] Vund's followers believed in his vision and considered him an effective leader, even though they considered his methods foreign. He and his followers were emboldened by the weakness of the local Nordic garrison and planned to continue their illicit activities in the region and saw the first attack as only the beginning of their campaign.[9]

His plans were foiled when members of the local garrison, aided by the adventurer managed to free some of the smugglers, receive vital information regarding Vund's plot, and collapse the side entrance bolt holes that could be used by the Reachmen to attack the settlement and storm the caves where the alchemical reagents were stored. He was killed during that attack.[2]

Although they were defeated, it turned out that Vund and his followers were following the orders of a mysterious benefactor who wanted them to lay waste to the settlement.[5]
