"Craglorn is safe, for now. I will remain behind, in case this place becomes unstable again."
—Sara Benele[1]

Sara Benele was an accomplished Breton mage active during the Interregnum of the Second Era. She was a member of the Mages Guild who played a key role in preventing the Mage's Staff in the Spellscar from causing a catastrophe that could destroy the entire region of Craglorn.[1][2]

History[edit]

Gabrielle Benele, Sara's sister

Little is known of Sara's past. She had a sister named Gabrielle, who also accomplished notable feats of her own. Both Gabrielle and Sara were members of the Mages Guild, though the two sisters were quite different in many ways.[1]

Around 2E 582, Sara was dispatched by the Mages Guild to Craglorn.[3] According to Sara, she was already in the region when the Mage's Staff fell from the firmament, which led the Mages Guild to send her to investigate the fallen celestial object. She then ventured into the Spellscar, focusing on assessing the dangers posed by the grand obelisk. Eventually, Sara reached a quite alarming conclusion—the Mage's Staff was emitting magical energy at unprecedented levels. If left unchecked, the obelisk would trigger a catastrophic explosion that could devastate the entire region of Craglorn, with enough power to reduce it to a crater.[1][2]

With the help of an adventurer, whom she had heard about from her sister Gabrielle, Sara set out to prevent the impending calamity. Sara realized that to stop the threat posed by the obelisk, they first needed to find a way into its core. However, gaining access would require an unprecedented amount of magical energy. Sara decided to harness the power left by the elemental shards scattered across the area, remnants of the celestial object that had shattered upon impact. With the help of focusing crystals and her accomplice, they managed to absorb three types of elemental infusions from the shards. She admitted that the magic involved was of a whole different order than anything she was used to. However, by using the combined energies, Sara ultimately managed to open a portal into the Mage's Staff.[1][2]

Upon entering the realm within the Staff, Sara theorized about its exact location—whether it was located within Oblivion or Aetherius. However, she quickly shifted her focus to the immediate danger, identifying the location of the core on the far side of the floating islands that made up the space of the realm. Sara and the adventurer traversed through the realm, occasionally creating passageways with spells. She likened it to a spell from the story she once heard about Arch-Mage Shalidor, who fashioned a bridge out of shattered glass. However, she admitted that the spell she was casting was far less troublesome to perform.[1][2]

The Staff's sole guardian, an aspect of the Celestial Mage named Zozubeth, fiercely defended the plane from the Serpent's influence by attacking anyone who entered. So consumed by her duty, she didn’t realize how severe the danger of the core had become. As they made their way through the realm toward the core, Sara and the adventurer had to defeat Zozubeth.[1][4] Ultimately, they reached the core, where Sara sealed it, ensuring the danger was neutralized.[1][2]

Sara chose to stay in the area for an extended period, just in case the energies within the staff became unstable once more. While she hoped this wouldn't occur, she remained cautious. During this time, she decided to take samples of the staff to the Mages Guild for further study.[1][2]

After those events, Sara planned to meet Gabrielle in Anvil. Known for being organized and punctual, Sara, however, was delayed by at least a week, if not longer. Gabrielle voiced her concerns, especially since Sara had been sent to Craglorn by the guild.[3]
