Lore:Red Eagle's Fury
As the blood-sun rose and set
Despite the bite of a hundred arrows
He fought till death he met" — Red Eagle's Song
Red Eagle's Fury, also known as Red Eagle's Bane[1] was the legendary sword wielded by Faolan during his defense of the Reach against the invasion of the Imperial forces of Empress Hestra which started in 1E 1028 until his last stand against Empress Hestra's forces in 1E 1030.
Red Eagle's Fury was described as magnificent,[1] and powerful flaming blade.[2][3][4] According to the tales of the Vateshrans, when it was wielded by Faolan, "no ring or steel could turn his blade."[4] The sword was likened to the Shehai of the Ansei, though any direct connection between them is unclear;[2] however, in rare circumstances, Shehai have been known to persist after the bearer's death.[5]
According to the legends, when the Reach is free, his blade should be returned to him that he might rise and lead them again.[6] The legend turned out to be true when Faolan's corpse was presented with the Red Eagle's Fury and the ancient king rose from his grave.[1]
History[edit]
First Era[edit]
Clear your mind, Red Eagle, don't surrender to the fates ...
Fill your heart with the thing that makes it roar ...
And let your spirit, your love, and your life, let it soar ...
Then it will come to you, your love, your life, your sword ..."—Song of Red Eagle
Faolan, the legendary Reach king wielded Red Eagle's Fury.[2][7][4] It is unknown how he entered into the possession of this blade, but the first records of him wielding it state that it was used against Empress Hestra legions during their pacification of the Reach that lasted from 1E 1028 to 1E 1030.[6]
Tales of a legendary warrior wielding flaming blade were known among folk of Tamriel before his death in 1E 1030.[2]
Soon after he traded his heart for the power that was supposed to help him defend his homeland he gathered Reachmen who clung to the old ways and yearned for freedom to forge a new nation. The rebels grew in strength and numbers, and none could stand against them; after two years, they had all but succeeded in driving the foreigners out of the Reach.[6]
Faolan and his followers engaged in an extended guerrilla campaign which, while tactically successful, was not enough to stem the seemingly endless waves of Imperial reinforcements. Hestra's generals returned with an even bigger invasion force and laid siege to Red Eagle's stronghold until he himself came forth for battle, alone and naked, wielding only his flaming blade and killed a thousand soldiers before they brought him down.[6][4] Dying Red Eagle was taken to a prepared tomb, and with his remaining strength, he presented his sword to his people, and swore an oath: Fight on, and when at last the Reach is free, his blade should be returned, that he might rise and lead them again.[6]
Second Era[edit]
At some point before 2E 582 Red Eagle's tomb was visited by a Breton scholar of the Red Eagle's legacy Dettethor Pantenne. He reached the burial chamber and found the sword he described as Red Eagle's Bane placed on the pedestal beside Faolan's sarcophagus. Intrigued, Pantenne grasped the blade's hilt, and at that moment, Faolan communicated with him telepathically. Red Eagle's convinced him with a visions and promises of power to place the sword in the sarcophagus alongside his body. After a while the Reachfolk king awakened from his slumber in a skeletal form. Scholar's mind was filled with terrific visions of destruction. In a rush of adrenaline Dettethor managed to steal the blade from the freshly awakened Faolan and ran away towards the exit of the tomb. At some point of his escape he lost the blade inside the tomb and triggered mechanism that sealed the Rebel's Cairn.[1]
Fourth Era[edit]
At some point of the history before 4E 201 blade entered into ownership of Reachfolk Briarheart member of the commando of Forsworn who stationed at Sundered Towers. In 4E 201, the Last Dragonborn plundered Red Eagle's tomb and killed the undead being he had become, claiming his mighty sword.[8]

Notes[edit]
- During the Interregnum in 2E 582, armaments and weaponry bearing the name of Red Eagle's Fury were seen in the Reach. These items were typically crafted within the forge located within the confines of Red Eagle's Redoubt. The weapons produced at this forge were imbued to amplify both the martial and magical abilities of those who wielded them.[10][11] This was just one among several distinctive crafting locations spread throughout Tamriel,[12][13] renowned for bestowing unique effects upon the weapons, armor, and jewelry produced within their confines.[14][15][16]
