Oldgate (also spelled as Old Gate)[1] is a fortified border gate on the southern border of Rivenspire, a northern kingdom in the province of High Rock. The fort is the gateway into Rivenspire for the rest of the province and it works adjacent to Newgate, another keep on the Stormhaven end of the pass.[2] It is also the home of a militia called the Oldgate Lancers, who swore allegiance to the Kingdom of Rivenspire.[3]

History[edit]

When Oldgate is founded is unknown, however, the Oldgate Lancers have been established since at least the early First Era. The militia was present in the Battle of Glenumbra Moors,[4] an important conflict between the Direnni Hegemony and the Alessian Order.[5] They joined their fellow warriors in the "Charge of the Shornhelm Knights".[4]

In 2E 566, King Ranser of Shornhelm amassed an army from across Rivenspire and beyond to battle High King Emeric and the Daggerfall Covenant. The Oldgate Lancers were recruited to his side and played a significant role in the civil war that ensued afterward. They were part of the Shornhelm advance guard and were present at the siege on Wayrest before Ranser's main army even arrived in the city. Emeric and his troops met them on the battlefield and were able to overwhelm them with his enchanted broadsword, the Orichalc Scalpel. The Oldgate Lancers fled the scene while Emeric was able to bolster the perimeter.[3]

When the war was over, the Kingdom of Rivenspire swore allegiance to the Daggerfall Covenant, and the Oldgate Lancers were absorbed into the greater Covenant Army.[6] In 2E 582, Baron Wylon Montclair seized control of Shornhelm and pitted the noble houses against each other. The Daggerfall Covenant was called in and first assembled themselves in Oldgate before retaking the city.[2][7]

During the Imperial Simulacrum in the late Third Era, the town of Old Gate was an active settlement. It was ruled by Count Tristyval and had a rivaly with Portdun Creek.[1] Old Gate is neighbored by several settlements, including Normar Heights to the northeast, Shornhelm to the southwest, and Thorkan Park to the southeast.[8]

Notes[edit]

  • The M'aiq the Liar seen in ESO claims Oldgate was once simply known as "Gate". However, because of the Khajiit's dubiousness when it comes to facts, this may not be true.
  • Some people enchant talismans to always point it to Oldgate's location.[9]
