Mzinchaleft is a Dwarven ruin located high in the Hailstone Valley of Hjaalmarch, in the province of Skyrim. It is located near Dawnstar. The ruin contains one of the few Great Lifts to Blackreach.
Several expeditions were conducted into the ruins in the Fourth Era. Calcelmo of Markarth led one such project, returning to Markarth with several artifacts and a rare, intact Dwarven Spider.[1] Afterward, a group of bandits took over the exposed stronghold, using it as their headquarters as they raided the nearby roads.[2] Dwemer scholar Maluril Ferano later stayed with the outlaws, paying for whatever artifacts they found within the ruin.[3] By 4E 201, Ferano believed Mzinchaleft held a dormant power he sought to control.[4]

Notes[edit]
- A portion of its name, Mzinchaleft, holds a translatable meaning. "Mzin" signifies "against," while "chal" is derived from the longer phrase "chal fahl," which, according to Calcelmo's Stone, can be translated to "do not desire," although its accuracy may be imperfect.[UOL 1][5]
