Farangel Gardner was a Breton noble from the early-mid First Era. He is most well-known for being the first King of Wayrest and the founder of its first ruling house, the Gardner Dynasty.[1]
Farangel's origins are unknown, besides that he was a member of House Gardner. The Gardners lived in the Wayrest settlement since before the kingdom was founded, back when it experienced growth after the Siege of Orsinium. Although references to the city existed well before his time,[1] Farangel's beer ballad suggests that he claimed the land for House Gardner and cleared the woods to build it.[2] In 1E 1100, Farangel became its first king and took over the city and its surrounding area. The Improved Emperor's Guide to Tamriel claims he declared the land for himself[3] but the Cumberland Edition of Wayrest, Jewel of the Bay says he was granted the right to call Wayrest his kingdom.[4]
Wayrest before him had flourished by working with merchants and traders, but under his leadership, lesser merchants also thrived. They were openly welcomed and brought under forceful protection. It is because of this, that the kingdom's eternal wealth was ensured.[3] Farangel tried his hand at poetry and asked his scribe to write down his words. It was supposed to be an epic ballad about Wayrest's beauty and wonder, but it went nowhere and was never published.[5][6] It was later archived in Wayrest's Mages Guild chapter until it was stolen by the Thieves Guild in Abah's Landing.[7]
Farangel is remembered as a great king[3][7] and many things are named after him. Farangel's Landing is a small settlement to the west outside of Wayrest owned by a noble family.[8][9] Farangel's Delve is a mine a little more to the west, just south of Soulshriven Tower.[10] Its origins are likewise unknown but for generations, it has mainly been a smugglers' den.[11]
