Fallen Grotto
"His punishment for failure is to roam the Hunting Grounds as prey. His chest, a gaping hollow, a reminder of his weakness." —Hircine

Brinarch was a leader of a commando of the Reachfolk faction Dark Witnesses who took over the Fallen Grotto from the Glenmoril Wyrd to become a Briarheart. He was active during the Interregnum in 2E 582.[1]

History[edit]

Attack on the Fallen Grotto[edit]

Brinarch's projection in the Hunting Grounds

Circa 2E 582, the Reachfolk clan, the Dark Witnesses, sought to reclaim the kingdom of Evermore, which was once part of ancient Reachmen lands.[2] A part of their forces led by Brinarch attacked the Glenmoril Wyrd, taking over the Fallen Grotto, a sacred place devoted to Hircine. With a sacred shrine of Hircine now theirs, he used the opportunity to directly commune with the Huntsman in the Hunting Grounds mirror realm of the grotto seeking the approval for a briar heart, to which the Prince approved. Brinarch received the boon and became a Briarheart.[1][3]

Since the Wyrd fell prey, they lost Hircine's favor, which was instead granted to the invaders. Hircine refused to grant an audience to the disgraced coven, forcing them to resort to having an adventurer contact him in their stead. He responded once the heart of one of the Wyrd sisters was presented to him. Intrigued by the act of self-sacrifice by the coven, Hircine offered the hunter's test as a chance to earn back the Grotto; the adventurer was to track down and defeat his Aspects of Strength, Speed, and Guile.[1][4][5]

The Prince brought a mere shade of the Hunting Grounds to the Fallen Grotto, where therein the challenge began. After the adventurer slew the aspects, the final challenge was between two hunters. The victor was requested to present the heart of the defeated to the prince of the Hunt.[6][2]

The fledgling Briarheart lost the duel. The adventurer prevailed, and Brinarch's briarheart was torn out and offered to Hircine as tribute, winning the Huntsman's favor back for the coven.[7][1]

Afterlife[edit]

Brinarch's spirit was sentenced to wander the Hunting Grounds with a gaping hole where his heart once was, as a reminder of his failure.[4][1]
