Brackenleaf is a Graht-oak township located within Brackenleaf's forest, bordered by the Long Coast, the southernmost region of the grand region of Grahtwood. It was located north of Haven.[1][2][3] It shares its name with the ancient tree Brackenleaf, planted by Y'ffre at the creation of the world. It was known to be home of the Brackenleaf's Briars, an exclusive order of hunters dedicated to seeking the balance in everything and protecting Brackenleaf and its heart from enemies who seek to destroy Y'ffre's creation and steal the power held within the heart.[3][4][5]
Layout & Geography[edit]
Brackenleaf is a small settlement composed of several connected Tree-Pods sung with the use of magic. The bridges link the communal dining area with the Sleeping Pod and the Memorial to the Hunt, which occupies the highest point in the graht-oak. As of 2E 582, the Memorial served as the quarters of the leader of the Brackenleaf's Briars. Surrounding the graht-oak tree are three shrines, with each dedicated to a different animal - one for the snake, another for the tiger, and the last for the wolf.[1][6][7] Those shrines have a significant role in the customs and rituals of the Brackenleaf's Briars and are an integral part of their initiation process.[5][8]

History[edit]
Little is known of the date of founding or the history of the settlement. It was founded at some point during, or after the Imperial occupation of Grahtwood,[8] between 1E 2714, and 2E 430.[9] Thaldil was the first of Brackenleaf's Briars and established the order. Over the years, the Brackenleaf's Briars grew in size and influence, and eventually the settlement named after the Brackenleaf was established. It was already active approximately in 2E 532, when Glaras became the leader of the Brackenleaf's Briars.[8] Village served as the headquarters of the Brackeleaf's Briars and their leader was the sole known figure of authority in the town. It is unclear whether there were any other forms of leadership in the settlement, but most of the residents sought guidance from the leader of the Briars.[5]
During the Three Banners War, the Brackenleaf's Briars, and by extension the settlement of Brackenleaf refuse to engage in politics, believing it would compromise their purpose as guardians of the ancient tree Brackenleaf. They held no animosity towards the Queen Ayrenn or the Aldmeri Dominion, however. As of then, the Briars were still led by Glaras,[8] though she already has chosen her successor, Mongon, though as of then he still had a lot to learn and many years of experience to gain before that transition could take place.[10]
In 2E 582 an outsider arrived at the settlement of Brackenleaf, seeking to become a Briar. They participated in the initiation process, lighting the braziers at the shrines of the Snake, Tiger, and Wolf. After meeting with Brackenleaf, they confronted the predator of their chosen spirit animal and obtained a piece of Brackenleaf's heart, thus completing the initiation.[5] A feast celebrating their successful initiation was organized. No expenses were spared for this occasion, and dishes such as the heart of the snake, tiger, and wolf, frog legs, and mammoth tongue were served.[11]
In the same year, one of the citizens, Firaelion went missing, in a cave to the north known as the Scuttle Pit. He ventured there to gather spider silk for a dress for Mendil, one of the members of the Brackenleaf's Briars. He was rescued from a giant spider called the Spider Queen by a recently recruited member of the Briars.[12][13][14]
Local merchants were known to supply the Brackenleaf's Briars.[15] Following the decline of the trade in Haven, some merchants planned to expand their routes to the inland Valenwood settlements such as Brackenleaf and Elden Root.[16] The settlement was also a place where Brackenleaf's Briar's feasts were organized.[11]
Notes[edit]
- Trees of Brackenleaf was a folio of engravings depicting the leading trees of Brackenleaf, with their names and brief histories.[17]
