Map of Black Marsh

Archon is one of the eight major cities in the province of Black Marsh,[1] situated on the eastern coast on the Padomaic Ocean. The area is historically considered to be in the realm of the Lilmothiit and Cantemiric Velothi.[2]

Layout & Geography[edit]

Archon is located on the eastern coast of the province, surrounded by dense marshland to the north and beaches to the south, and near a river estuary that feeds into the provincial center. North of the city is also a series of isolated bodies of water and another river that extended to northern Black Marsh. Archon is neighbored by several settlements, including Portdun Mont to the northwest and Seafalls to the north-northeast.[1] Resort taverns in the city provide rooms with balconies where visitors can sit in the shade, drink, and admire the view of the city and surrounding area. Animals such as strong-jawed beetles and chirp-fishes can be found here. There are trees around the city that produce large inedible nuts, with some residents climbing up the trees to throw their nuts into the waters for use in local sports.[UOL 1]

  • Shadowscales Training Facility[4]

History[edit]

The Black Marsh elves (comprising groups such as the Cantemiric Velothi and Barsaebic Ayleids) settled in the eastern regions near present-day Archon, Arnesia, and Thorn long ago. The southern coastal regions of the province were considered to be the realm of the Lilmothiit as well.[2]

Archon was an active settlement during the Blackwater War in the late First Era and its coast was riddled with pirates. After the failure of her predecessor, General Lucinia Falco took over the Imperial Legion and their campaign for Argonia. She believed that the warfront could not be faced on one side, so she strongly urged the Empire to send letters of marque and temporary commissions to the pirates of the Archon coast. In conjunction with the Diamond Marines, they were able to secure the southeast region and even large parts of Middle Argonia. The war had only escalated from there and it had eventually come to an abrupt end in 1E 2837.[5] Elder Nuetepa of the Three Waters Tribe was a member of the mysterious organization and was active in Archon during the Alliance War.[6][7] During the Imperial Simulacrum in the late Third Era, the city-state of Archon was an active settlement. It was ruled by King Herula and had a rivalry with Lilmoth and Thorn.[3]

Culture[edit]

Archon is a coastal city with many benefits and curios because of it. It is a major stop on the East Empire Company's southeast lines and with connections to the following cities, Lilmoth, Soulrest, and Tear.[8] A nearby coastal tribe of Argonians were able to breed a unique kind of guar called the Glowgill Guar, reportedly with the ability to breathe underwater.[9] While there are multiple variants of it, the original is distinguished by its navy-blue skin and bright blue stripes. The people of this city often play games such as Jump Stick (similar to jump rope, but with sticks), Ironseed (where two teams try to throw a cannonball into a small hole found on a tall stick-shaped goal), Jaw Beetle Fight (where children dress up like beetles, attach jaw-shaped sticks on their heads, and try to pull them off of other children while underwater), Marsh Tag (played underwater, where children tag each other by locating one another through sound), and Sink Tag (a team climbs trees and attempts to hit the other team below them with nuts).[UOL 1]

For an unspecified amount of time, the Shadowscales had a training facility in Archon but by 4E 187 it was shut down. There were plans from the Listener of the Dark Brotherhood in Cheydinhal, Alisanne Dupre and fellow member, Rasha to revive the facility in response of the brotherhood's decline.[4]

Black Marsh's eastern coast was once populated by elven sub-cultures, such as the Barsaebic Ayleids and the Cantemiric Velothi. They lived all throughout the eastern seaboard, between Archon and Thorn, as well as Arnesia.[2]

Notes[edit]

  • Arena was originally conceived as a fighting game featuring a tournament that took the player to each of Tamriel's cities to challenge different gladiatorial teams. According to a file from that stage of development left behind in the final game, Archon's gladiatorial team would have been called "the Plague".[UOL 2]
  • There is a similarly named clearing known as Archon's Grove. In addition, Ithelia was known as the "Prime Archon" of the Magna Ge.[10] It is unknown if these names have any connection to the city of Archon.
