The Synod is one of the organizations formed after the dissolution of the Mages Guild at the start of the Fourth Era, the other being their bitter rivals of the College of Whispers. The Synod has no standing relationship with the College and prides itself on being the premier, Imperially-sanctioned magical institution in Tamriel.

The Synod maintains strict regulations on the dissemination of magical knowledge, limiting the teaching of spells and outright banning certain arts such as conjuration and necromancy, which has led rivals to denounce them as close-minded. Members will only teach spells and train fellow members, who have therefore proven themselves responsible enough to handle them, and advanced incantations are even more restricted. The Synod is organized around conclaves which occupy the locations of the former Mages Guild halls in all of Cyrodiil's cities except for Kvatch. Known ranks in the Synod include Attendant, Journeyman, Adjunct and First Adjunct.

Synod mages are not just restricted to cities, but also travel throughout the province to make field studies. A team of eight researchers was recently dispatched to the Ayleid ruin of Rielle to investigate the legend of the Flamelight Spire, and you will find their corpses scattered throughout the ruins. A note near one of their bodies suggests that, just like a previous expedition, they fell victim to the ruin's undead occupants.

Joining[edit]

In keeping with their strict control of magical knowledge, it is not possible to join the Synod at the Bruma conclave.
