A Soul Trapped target
Soul Trap: Lay claim to an enemy's soul, dealing [12303 / 12427 / 12572 / 12719] Magic Damage over 20 seconds. Fills an empty Soul Gem if an affected enemy dies.
Soul Splitting Trap: Cost: [2700 / 2610 / 2520 / 2430] Magicka, Duration: 10 seconds, Area: 8 meters.
Lay claim to enemy souls, dealing 6344 Magic Damage to your target and any other nearby enemies over 10 seconds. Fills an empty Soul Gem if an affected enemy dies.
Consuming Trap: Lay claim to an enemy's soul, dealing 12685 Magic Damage over 20 seconds. If an affected enemy dies, you fill an empty Soul Gem, heal for [2720 / 2880 / 3040 / 3200] Health, and restore [5099 / 5399 / 5698 / 6002] Magicka and [(147 × Medium Armor #) / (155 × Medium Armor #) / (164 × Medium Armor #) / (172 × Medium Armor #)] Stamina. This portion of the ability scales off your Max Health, Magicka, and Stamina.

Soul Trap deals Magic Damage over time to a target, and if the target is killed while the spell is still in effect, it will fill an empty soul gem (provided you have one). While the damage is modest, filled soul gems can be used to recharge your magical weapons, or to revive yourself or your allies on the battlefield, thus avoid the long trek back from the nearest Wayshrine. The Soul-Splitting Trap morph also affect enemies in an area around the target, allowing you to full multiple soul gems at once but halves the duration, while the Consuming Trap morph will restore your Health, Magicka, and Stamina if the enemy is killed while the spell is in effect.

Notes[edit]

  • This skill is given to you for free as soon as you are given the Soul Magic skill tree. Morphing it still costs a skill point however.
  • It is possible for multiple players to fill soul gems from the same enemy if both of them cast Soul Trap on it.[verification needed — see talk page]
  • The target need not be killed by you to receive the soul (and restoration from Consuming Trap). If it is killed by any means, you will receive the benefits.
  • The Soul Lock passive skill grants you a chance of automatically collecting souls without the use of Soul Trap. When used in combination with Soul Trap, you have a chance at getting two souls from a kill (or even three with the Soul-Splitting Trap morph).[verification needed — see talk page]

Patch Notes[edit]

  • Consuming Trap: This ability can no longer be used on critters to restore Health, Magicka, and Stamina.
  • This ability can now hit two additional targets that are close to the primary target.
  • Your feet will no longer slide if you strafe while casting this ability.
    • Soul Splitting Trap (morph): This ability now hits 3 targets instead of providing 2 soul gems per target.
  • Fixed an issue where the initial hit from this ability or its morphs could remove targets from Sneak or Invisibility if they were near the impact of the initial target.
  • This ability has been restructured to fit into our single target DoT standards.
  • Since this ability is the first ability you have access to, it will dynamically scale with your offensive stats with some extra detection abilities - if your Weapon Damage is higher it will deal Physical Damage, but if your Spell Damage is higher it will deal Magic Damage.
  • Increased the damage per tick by approximately 161%.
  • Removed the 2 second delay from these abilities.
  • This ability and the Consuming Trap will now only hit one enemy instead of up to 2.
  • Fixed many visual errors with these abilities.
  • Consuming Trap: This morph will now restore 20% of your Health, Magicka, and Stamina, up from 10%, when a target affected dies. The tooltip will state the actual return to help you visualize the weight of its true power.
  • Soul Splitting Trap: This morph now converts the ability into an area of effect DoT, hitting any target in an 8 meter radius around your original target, but deals approximately 33% less damage per tick.
  • This ability and its morphs will no longer fill Soul Gems if the target affected was a target dummy or critter.
  • Fixed an issue where the application of these abilities could not be dodged, and where each tick of the damage could be dodged.
  • Updated the visual effects to better line up with the animation of these abilities.
  • Reduced the damage per tick of this ability and its morphs by 40%.
  • Fixed an issue where Soul Trap and its morphs would not clear when clearing all spent points while respeccing.
  • This ability and its morphs now only deal Magic Damage, but its damage will still scale dynamically.
  • This ability and the Consuming Trap morph now last for 20 seconds.
  • Reduced the damage per tick of all versions of this skill by approximately 23%.
    • Soul Splitting Trap (morph): This morph no longer reduces the damage done per tick of the skill, and instead cuts the base duration in half.
